Don't know about the money question.....but I can say that the community college route is what I think is best for the first year or two. I did it, then transferred. I would recommend that route to anyone, especially those who are younger than normal college freshman.

Here in Roanoke, Va Western is the comm college and if your college grades are good, you can transfer to any college in the state. It's a great way to save money, get college credits and keep an eye on them. Where does she go to high school?

Best for her? Really? First sentence speaks about saving "...daddy a lot of money..." Concerns expressed for her comes as the last words written. IMO, the best consideration elates to her potential major. Can the CC provide the necessary/required/desired courses so she is not deficient when arriving at the Senior college? Hate to see kids take courses that do not transfer and also find that the rigor of those that do transfer was at a considerably lower level than what was experienced by those who started at the Senior institution. Remember, it really IS about her. What does she want? Ask her and then you and all the rest serve as counselors to her and not dictators who, may, be influenced by personal by personal reasons, not related, really, to her welfare.

For those of us who went the CC route, I don't think it was "bad" and did not prepare us. It is cheaper, and in the long run, that's good to graduate without a HUGE debt.

Wow eerdoc ,didn't realize wanting to save money while doing what's best is a bad idea ...I believe it can be done ! A little research will do wonders just trying to get some opinions from people who has been through this ...that's all nothing more

John Tyler has an enrollment of 15k. That's a big CC. It cost $146.75 per credit hour. WVU's out of state tuition is $22k. Huge difference there.

Go the CC route if money is the critical issue and I understand this if it is. I have two at WVU paying out of state tuition. My last child wants to go the CC route (thank God) and then transfer to VCU. Supposedly, tuition costs at VCU are comparable to what I pay the CC when she gets through the two years at CC. Living at home will help too. Personally, I want her to go to WVU but she doesn't want to.

CC is a value and shouldn't be looked at as second rate education. English 101 can't be any different at the CC as it is at a Div 1 school.

CC for a year is a great idea.
Many years ago, the Parkersburg cc students were quiet well prepared for upper division work at WVU. In some ways they were better prepared in study habits and test taking from cc where they had had more hands on instruction. There is no difference in the basic courses at either location. The cc instructors seemed like they had more interest in 1st and 2nd year student success than at WVU. WVU instructors really didn't give a damn if you survived or not. That seems to be true at most 4 year institutions. There are a lot of distractions in Morgantown that you don't find in hometown. Of course the social life is part of the college education. Depends on maturity of individual. And don't think twice about teaching the value of money. That lasts a lifetime.

Good luck to her whichever route you guys choose. I don't think either way is a bad choice. I went straight to a 4-year school (WVU), but I also had tuition paid through a scholarship. That made the financial part of it an easy decision. I have several friends who started out at a CC, then finished up at a 4-year school. They managed to save a ton of money, and none are any less successful for the choice. My stance has always been that the education you receive is largely a function of the amount of work the student is willing to put into it.
