We hear some say it could be a few year for Nebraska to get caught up to teams like Iowa when it comes to S&C. Wondering why it would take a few years? I know little to nothing about conditioning, nutrition and muscle gain. I know under Riley we basically had 3 years of no S&C. So for those with more knowledge on the topic, how long does it take to make up those losses? Just my naive opinion but it seems that 2 years of S&C should be enough to put o weight and muscle to be equal to other BIG10 teams. Or is more from a depth perspective vs and actual just getting bigger.

S&C isn't something that happens overnight. There's a reason why, when a kid commits to a school whether he be a high school freshman or a high school senior, the school gets him copies of their workout regimens very quickly. College S&C and high school S&C is a world of difference, unless you're maybe IMG Academy. It takes years to build up the results that you see on Saturdays.

It has little to do with Nebraska not being able to build up the S&C and more to do with how long it takes the body to absorb and build upon the results. Granted, Iowa does pretty good at S&C so if that's going to be your model for comparison sake, to say it will only take 2 years to be at the same level would be a compliment.

Keep in mind those comments apply to more than just improving a player's personal bests in the squat. It takes time to shift attitude, culture, and the expectation centered around strength and conditioning.

Strength coaches can change the lifting philosophy and the way they facilitate their approach, but players still have to adapt accountability.

There is a perception that players didn't lift during the Riley years. That's not exactly correct. The issue is the players were never held to any consequence if their effort didn't match the standard needed for this level.

As of August 2019, there will be 91 new players on the roster compared to when Frost arrived in December 2017. Part of that roster flip had to do with getting rid of the Riley Disney mentality.

Yeah, I agree with all of what you guys are saying. My own thoughts:

S&C takes 1-2 years of solely focusing on that to really make significant gains. Add in the fact that this is a highly physical game where injuries hold you back, and the fact that these kids are 18-23 years old usually, where your body can absorb a lot of punishment but when you are still technically finishing out your growth into being an adult man, and there you have the reasons why this takes a bit.

Second, the Big Ten features dudes, particularly linemen, who live in the north. Big dudes shoving around big dudes. Look at how Michigan pushed us around last year, badly. That is an example of having to feed your linemen like hogs and make them lift enough weight to equal a house until they don't get pushed around like that.

Lastly, from what I can tell and have heard, our prior S&C guy was ok and learning to be better, but wasn't allowed to enforce any consequences for dudes not following their diet plan or skipping workouts. They wanted to, but higher up admins said no. That is NOT the case now.

Nice use of cases from 2011 to make your point. Know what else was awesome? The 1997 Nebraska football team.

Yeah, man. Those were the days!

You should re-read OP where in the first sentence he brings up Iowa as a model for comparison. N stands for Nowledge, use it smartly.

jeez, bro, triggered much?

at least sending 13(!) players to the hospital was worth it o wait Iowa went 7-6 that year

baaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahaaha

He's best known for being the leader of mediocrity. Only in Iowa will they tell you that 7-8 wins is great and that people are stupid for trying to attain more. Iowa gonna Iowa.
You're doing so well with your coaches that you consistently pay them millions of dollars NOT to coach at Nebraska.

It's quite the double-win for the coaches involved.

Yeah, Nebraska has some kind of moral high ground on Iowa. You clearly thought that response out.

But, but, but... Iowa says don't live in the past, yet you guys want to continue to bring up events that happened over 20 years ago... Come on Perky.. YOu have to be better than this. You have a terrible troll game. Maybe go to Twitter and practice for awhile and then come back and try again.

it's not surprising for someone with nothing to celebrate to continue to bring up very notable achievements of others as if they're a bad thing

that orange bowl windbreaker still fit or has your inflated sense of accomplishment from winning regular season games gone to your belly?

Nebraska fan: hmm should I wear my 1994 national champs hat today? no, '95. no, '71. no, gotta be '97. no, wait, '70. with so many, how can I choose?!

Iowa fan: guess I'll just wear the same old generic hawkeyes hat I always wear

Never said I wanted to be Iowa. I simply used Iowa as an example because there was an obvious size and strength difference.

I'm sure those hats impress the kids today that only recall Nebraska getting killed in B12 title games or getting killed in their only B10 title game appearance.

I know funny isn't it. THey bring up the past 4 years every chance they get. Then in the next breath preach how much Nebraska lives in the past.

Iowa fans hate Nebraska fans because we act superior based upon 30+ years of results. Nebraska fans hate Iowa fans because they act superior based upon 3 years of results. Whatever. Clearly Iowa was physically superior last year... and won by 3 on a last second FG. I have no doubt that our games will be a good matchup in next few seasons, and I don't see S&C being the difference maker that it has been recently. I think the games will be won based upon game plan and execution, and maybe a few lucky breaks. Possibly by Nebraska's vastly superior skill players.

A+ meatballing and hatering but yes, the one thing Iowa does very well is is S&C. They develop low-rated recruits through their system and S&C program and produce good-if-not-great teams especially along the OL and DL and at TE.

No, they haven't won a title in a very long time but also neither has Nebraska and I don't know why you guys insist on ignoring that they've whipped NU's *** badly the last several times out. Losing a closer game last year doesn't give us bragging rights.

I know, facts are so much more boring than ignorant trash talk.

couple facts I find rather interesting:

Iowa has never won anything of consequence since starting football in 1899.

Nebraska leads the all-time series 29–17–3.

Iowa's S&C program put more kids in the hospital in one offseason (13) than they've had drafted since 2015 (12).

they are a second-rate afterthought program by every single measure of success.

happy Friday, GBR

"Selective" is the word of the day.

S-e-l-e-c-t-i-v-e.

Used in a sentence: Top_Gun_ is very selective when he tries to find ways to bash Iowa.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's word of the day
