Question about Maryland?

So, I see that they're starting to play with the big boys on the recruiting trail. They have a good shot at Josh Jackson and they're trending for a top 3 player in 2017.

Is Under Armor the reason for this? No offense to Maryland but they really haven't done anything in a long time.

2. A coach who actually has paid his dues and he slowly built up his recruiting connections and can actually get in the door with all the east coast talent (Gary Williams was almost Tubby Smith and signed a ton of 3-star/JUCO guys in his latter years).

3. Out of the ACC shadow of Duke and Carolina, expanded more into Big Ten territory (Diamond Stone from Wisconsin).

Their football program is going to improve as well by coming to the B1G.

There was a long, detailed article in the New York Times recently about how the guy who started Under Armour - a Maryland grad - is following the Phil Knight Nike blueprint at Oregon to turn Maryland into a sports power house.

I hear this kind of thing a lot, and it always leaves me asking myself something....

Did I fall asleep and miss Oregon becoming a powerhouse?

I hear this all the time, things like "Look what Nike has done for Oregon!" and "Oregon dominates thanks to Nike".

Sure football has been good the last few years, but with not a whole lot to show for it.

No national championships in Football, no national championships in basketball, none in any other sports really that I know of...

They seem just like every other middle-of-the-road athletic department to me.

But they've only won 4 conference titles in the last 14 years....only 4.

They've been to 4 BCS bowl games all-time in the BCS era (last 18 years or so)- (which I would say is about equivalent to an elite eight, except 10 football teams make BCS games, and obviously only 8 make the Elite Eight).

It's not like Oregon has been dominant. They've never gotten over the hump, and their success (as far as I know) is solely limited to football, not in basketball, baseball, track, or anything else for that matter.

I guess I'm just not buying into the whole "Nike makes Oregon so dominant" thing.

As a terp fan I agree with this statement, except I don't think the football team will be improved this season, but maybe in 16 with Haskins as QB.

No one really saw Maryland as the landing spot especially seeing they are in the BIG now and will compete against Wisconsin. Rumors say UA offered Diamond father a job of sorts. Who knows if that is true.

When you say "no one really saw Maryland as the landing spot" for Stone, you must be forgetting the 5+ recruiting writers that Crystal Balled him to Maryland as many as six months before he actually committed.

I'm not naive to the positive effect that UA has on potential Maryland recruits, but for all the "dirty" recruiting that is going on, there sure is little proof. This so-called job that Bob Stone was offered by UA was a call out from one writer, who had (and still has) zero evidence that it ever happened. Probably because it didn't.

So tell me, what exactly is UA doing? I always see thinly veiled reference to UA "influence", what exactly does that entail that results in a player ending up at Maryland?

This whole thing is hardly as sinister as people like to make it sound. I mean it's really the whole point of shoe sponsored grassroots basketball programs. Kids come up playing on the UA circuit, get to know key members of UA grassroots, develop relationships with those people, and feel comfortable continuing those relationships at the college level. I'm sure in the case of guys like Josh Jackson and Trevon Duval there are preliminary talks of sponsorship deals at the next level, but those would be there regardless of whether or not they attend Maryland and certainly don't extend down to guys like Gabriel, Huerter, or Cowan.

I believe Gabriel played in E24, which is an All-Star game consisting of both UA and non-UA kids, I'm not aware of any other UA exclusive events he attended. I would guess the fact that Maryland was recruiting Gabriel back when he was a barely on the radar, 150th ranked player is a far bigger factor in his recruitment than the nebulous idea of "Under Armour Influence."

Top recruits play in all the events, including the Mcdonalds all american game, which is sponsored by Adidas. Those recruits playing in the MCD game might be on the Nike/UA circuit, but they are no strangers to Adidas!
