Still a new coach, and their benefactor only recently started to throw money at the program. They will be a very interesting case study on the effects of NIL and more so, the outright funding of a college basketball team. He owns the Jazz and is a tech bro.. buying AJ Dybantsa was a drop in the bucket for him.

If what im reading is correct, Ryan Smith would be the 2nd richest person in the state of Kentucky, behind Gustavson. And hes treating the BYU program in a way that says "ill pay for a title if I have to".

In all fairness, it is hard to compare the Pope era to the Young era due to BYU leaving the West Coast Conference for the B12. We have to wonder how much joining a major power conference boosted their ability to bring in better players? Pope only coached in the B12 one year before coming to UK. Is Young reaping the benefits or is he just that good of a coach? It will be fun to see what BYU does going forward.

As for Dybansta, I've watched him a few times and he seems lost on defense. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the NBA.

Pope had at least one year in the B12. I dont think the conference much matters. Instead its that this all coincided with NIL and Ryan Smith was able to start buying players. They'd never have Dybantsa otherwise. In a weird way, Pope got out right as BYU was unlocked. But remains to be seen if they have the right coach.

Saunders is a really good number 2 guy for a team also.

Ive seen a few BYU games and I just question if they play enough defense for a tournament run .

Kevin Young was hailed as a a great hire coming in with an nba background. But they play defense like an nba team when I’ve watched.
You really think "they don't play defense in the NBA"? That myth has been around for years and it is utterly false.

So, as I stated above, Dybansta appears lost on defense in 2 different games I've watched recently. I mentioned that to a friend, who has a lot of involvement in college and HS basketball, and he agreed with me. How will Dybansta work in the NBA with his lack of defense?

Maybe in the playoffs, other than NOPE .
Yeah that's false...and a ridiculous statement. Again, your untrained sue thinks that because those guys are so skilled and so good. But yeah I'm sure yoshukai knows better than the people that are in the game who call that "they don't play defense!!11!!" A crock of bull****. It's a dumb statement and has zero basis in fact.

Of course I won't, goober. Because you know nothing about what you're seeing and I'm sure you "don't watch "thug" ball." Where is your evidence that "derp derp they don't play defense." So why can't college kids who do play defense not come in and just lock down a guy like KD? Are you the f*** head" Reddick was talking about? They "play defense you 🤡. Just because you're too dumb to see it doesn't mean they don't. So shut your piehole. Just a myth perpetuated by ignorant old fools

I'm guessing his favorite 80-90s NBA team was the Celtics, huh?

Richie Saunders Stats (First Two Years at BYU):

2022-2023 Freshmen Year
15.9 Min PG, 45.3% FG%, 33.3% 3P%, 68.4 FT%, 2.4 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.3 BPG, 0.6 SPG, 0.7 TPO, 5.5 PPG

2023-2024 Sophomore Year
20.7 Min PG, 52.3% FG%, 36.4% 3P%, 71.2 FT%, 4.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.2 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 0.4 TPG, 9.6 PPG

Collin Chandler Stats (First Two Years so far at UK):

2024-2025 Freshmen Year
10.4 Min PG, 36.1% FG%, 34.7% 3P%, 86.7 FT%, 1.0 RPG, 0.7 APG, 0.1 BPG, 0.7 SPG, 0.9 TPG, 2.7 PPG

2025-2026 Sophomore Year
24.2 Min PG, 42.3% FG%, 40.4% 3P%, 85.7% FT%, 3.0 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.3 BPG, 1.2 SPG, 0.9 TPG, 9.4 PPG

Based on their stats, I'd say at the same point in their respective careers, Collin and Richie are extremely similar. In fact Collin is shooting it from 3 better than Saunders, better from the line than Saunders, and similar to slightly better in Points per game, steals, blocks, rebounds and assists. Senior and current Saunders is much better than Sophomore and current Chandler, but judging them based on who they both were as Sophomores, Chandler has just as high a ceiling, if not higher than by the time he is a senior. All that to say I don't take anything away from Saunders, he's a stud and will carve out a nice NBA career (pure shooters with size usually do). Just don't be surprised if Chandler grows into a stud as well. The stats back it up, he's progressing and trending that direction on the same trajectory as Saunders did.
