https://hailvarsity.com/s/7462/all-calm-in-nebraskas-quarterback-room A year ago this time there was controversy. Real controversy. Was this new coaching staff going to roll with a guy in Tristan Gebbia who had at least been around an extra year but still had as much in-game experience as the guy selling hot dogs or were they going to tab the true freshman Scott Frost flew literally coast-to-coast to personally recruit?
Now the only unknown is whether a third-year guy in this offense will be the primary backup or another true freshman who’s a little further along than this staff expected him to be.

What a difference a year makes.

“That position in particular is I think an example of the whole team — there’s improvement across the board that should help us from a frontline talent standpoint but also from a depth standpoint,” Frost said Friday.

“We just feel like a family,” Martinez said in the spring. “It’s definitely a special bond we all share.”

Night and Day from last year. We have a legit Heisman candidate with a year under his belt. Vedral eligible with experience. A future star in McCaffrey. Hopefully he can get some PT without burning his shirt. Bunch and Masker as backups. Smothers coming in this class. That 2021 kid from Texas looking good. Good lord.. last year. Gebbia bailing a week before first game. Adrian getting hurt in game one after not playing his senior year. Vedral not eligible yet. Walk on Bunch having to play at Michigan. Yikes. Nightmare scenario. NIGHT AND DAY!! GBR!!

Not just flew coast-to-coast, but overnight and vomited at UCF practice the next morning.

The addition of Luke McCaffery helps, tons. The article today has Frosts talking about how well Luke McCaffery has came along and how well he’s picking things up. We shouldn’t need him and he should redshirt this year...but if we needed to, McCaffery could step in this year and run our offense. QB room is night and day from last year. GBR

Amen, our QB recruiting and development has been less than stellar since we lost Zac Taylor and Joe Ganz. Now we have Frosty and Verdu who can sell kids NFL aspirations like Mariota and Martinez. The QB room looks to be solid and very talented for years to come. GBR!!

Last year was better than the previous 5 years.
The best starter weve had, maybe, ever.
The backup with more talent than other walkon qbs weve had.
Another transfer in Noah, just ncaa irregularities.

Now, this year is better with LM here and competing, plus everyone a year in to the system, plus MM.
But even last year, our qb situation was better than its been in awhile, and will only be better yet next year.

I see two starters and a back up from NU - I guess kids just want to play even if its on a team that has four P5 wins in the last four years
Yup, I saw Avery and Tyjon as well. Good for them. Some guys don't want to put in the work. They don't want to compete. They want it handed to them. Best of luck Riley's boys.

We've had plenty of 4 star quarterbacks recruited since then. The qb position is tricky because of the number of transfers and the tradition of taking only 1 qb a year. I think you need to break that tradition some years if you see depth problems in the future.

Yes, I'd caution about getting too optimistic about a QB roster at any school. Talented QBs don't co-exist too well these days as we learned last fall ourselves. So you just never know when or how long a QB roster will look good. It can change drastically overnight.

Since Ganz... recruiting major potential wasn't the issue according to recruiting services. We either struggled at development or we struggled at finding the right fit for our schemes.

4 stars (After Joe Ganz and before Adrian Martinez):
Zac Lee
Cody Green
Brion Carnes
Jamal Turner
Patrick O'Brien
Tristan Gebbia

3 stars
Pat Witt
Kody Spano
Taylor Martinez
Tommy Armstrong
Johnny Stanton
Zack Darlington

Actual Starters
4 star Zac Lee
4 star, Cody Green (2 games)
3 star, Taylor Martinez
3 star, Tommy Armstrong
Walk on, Ron Kellogg (briefly)
Walk on, Ryker Fyfe (briefly)
2 star, Tanner Lee

As an aside, Tanner Lee just got dumped in the NFL. Maybe another team will pick him up.

We struggled at developement and at fit.
Taylor wasnt a qb as much as a running phenom who could throw, and TA's numbers never got better, ad libbed when he didnt need to (throw it out of bounds), the rest, nope, nada, ho hum.
Someone here said oregon didnt do great at qb always, but each one did better than our best, and we now have our coaches mentor on qbs,Verdu.

It wont be a problem going forwards

It was a tough start for Frost. Losing the returning starter, his backup, and the QB of the future, before the season began. That's not a recipe for success at any program. Having a true frosh start the first game is normally a sign the program is going to struggle. And they did. Who knows how things might have been had the Akron game not been cancelled. What matters is that they regrouped, and went 4-2 in the second half of the season.

Year Two is going to be much better. The talent level is up, and the team seems to be on the same page. They are much more mentally tough.

You still have to sit out though. He played last year. He did not sit out. Lots of players thought they could play 4 games, redshirt, tranfer and not sit out. Greg Bell thought the same thing.
Yep. If you play your 4 then transfer you've essentially wasted 2 years on 4 games. Where it gets complicated is there's a clock on how long they have once they've played in a game, it starts their eligibility clock and regardless of RS or transfer they get like 6 years max.

Our coaching staff MIGHT make a difference in QB retention. I think the way MV and SF communicate with their QB room helps and keeps the QBs's expectations in line. That said, the test will be when AM leaves for the NFL. IF a true or redshirt freshman would win the job, all bets would be off for the older QBs.

You betcha....I was really shocked at how quick McCaffery was in the spring game. That kid can really MOVE. Fully agree huskerssalts.....we've got two real-deal qbs now. Not much experience but boatloads of talent.

Ahhh didn’t know that. That sucks for good ol Greg and Tyjon. Can’t say I feel too bad considering they abandoned their team in the middle of the season.
