I did see players from Okie State could commit now since their coach was fired and they had a special window to move. Wouldn't lots of other kids be able to now as well in their special window?

I hope the flash and health of RVZ can help attract both QB AND (gasp) WR interest in the portal. That’s probably more wishful thinking, and $$$ will drive most of the interest to start - but at some point we do indeed need to hit on a QB that is actually healthy and plays in spring before the regular season and attract more WR talent at the RVZ ability level. Not all American level but not MAC level WRs.

losing a lot on the OL this year could be tough on a new QB…. Hope the next men in at OL are ready to roll!!

I think Gronowski has done a very good job being here for one year. However would like to see someone with more than one year of eligibility in the future. Hope they stick with the two guys that have been in the system and see what happens.

I've been a fan my entire life, not seeing the backup/new starting QB until they are actually starting is not a new or scary feeling for me. Before NIL, the last Iowa starting QB that we got any truly meaningful look at before they were the starter was Vandenberg.

My faith in Hecklinski is moreso blind faith in Lester.
And Vandenberg only got reps because Stanzi was out. Then Vandenberg took exactly EVERY snap in a 4-8 season in 2012.

You can't have Hank Brown as your starting QB. You just can't. It's time Iowa stops settling for mediocrity at the QB position. There's no reason over the next several years that Iowa shouldn't have the roster to compete for a CFP berth. You can't monkey around w/ the freaking QB position and just expect to plug in program rejects, low-celing guys, and one-dimensional talents. It would be a terrible disservice to the other players and piss-poor leadership from KF and company. Coaching/leadership malpractice.

Maybe Jeremy is the guy. Hope so. Would be awesome to have high-quality QB play here from a guy who stays around a few years.

But if not, so be it. Go pay for one. Everyone else does who is serious about competing. You owe it to the program to swing big (or somewhat big) if Jeremy isn't the guy.

I’ve heard some folks excited for Hecklinski, others super down on Brown, and others think we need a portal QB to come in and at least compete if not start.

For those that are hopeful on Hecklinksi, what gives you high expectations given he only threw 2 passes this season and we’ve not had any meaningful chance to evaluate what he can do? I see he’s listed at only 170 lbs (altho I’m sure he’s put on some weight), which makes me wonder if he could even make it through a BIG season healthy.

And for those down on Brown, his poor game turned out to be against the undefeated BIG champs and very good defense while coming off the bench cold.

I think I’m in the camp that QB is a HUGE question mark for next year and really unsure what direction the staff will/should go. curious everyone’s opinions/insights as I’ve seen some scattered through various threads but not yet combined into one focused thread topic. Thoughts?
Think Fran Tarkenton when referring to Hecklinski...lol

This was easily the most maddening stat of that entire football season - where I think vandenberg/Iowa was literally the only program in the country with exactly one QB that took every snap. Even for KF who seems to make it a personal goal to limit any backup QB playing time and development every season, that was super strange in the 4-8 season.

And they promptly lost at home to NIU the first game of 2013 in the first game Rudock took a snap. There is not a coach in the history of football who has managed QBs worse than KF.

I think with the Freshman we brought in last year, and this upcoming we'll be fine with Heck , (especially if young Fitz stays). Bringing in a couple of guys every year is fine, BUT the flip side is you also have guys, or multiple guys leaving every year, and you just keep starting over in their development.
Meanwhile the Hoosiers are after:
Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby - 2,800 & 27 TDs

Iowa posters getting hard on for "Heck" 2 passes 8 yds.

See you next year in a thread like this. 😆 🤣 😂 😹

Sorsby is probably #1 QB in portal right now.
He will command 5 million.
Texas tech paid 4 million for a d- end last year....Cody Campbell will pay 5 + million without blinking.
So, you hard enough to write that 5 million check for Swarm?
That's what I thought.

CJB. But that doesn’t undermine your point.

We might have seen more QB2 this season if MG didn’t need the work himself.

Lester noted in a media session this past season that Hecklinski had an advantage on Brown when it came to off-schedule plays. Which says a bit. That comment coupled with the acknowledgement that Hecklinski is a bit of 'gun-slinger' tells me Hecklinski likely has some real play making ability. Finds a way. If you watch his tape from HS this would be confirmed. Lots of creative throws, off balance throws, etc. Seemed really accurate though.

His negatives are A) size, B) not a huge arm. (Seems more like a Purdy/Brecht arm to me)

Brown, as we've seen, has a bigger arm. Has some real velocity on his throws and can likely fit it into windows that Hecklinski couldn't. Better size. But doesn't move as well and isn't the creator his Hecklinski is. Sounds like a guy that has some real arm talent, can look really good in practice... but questions remain on level of play on game day. Can he put it all together?

That's the sense I get on these two.
That all sounds right, but Brown not moving as well doesn’t mean he’s a statue as other posters have claimed. Lester has said Brown runs pretty well, but on the edges rather than up the middle like Grono.

the contrast is hilarious and stunning but in all fairness gron was a step in the right direction. he was a good pickup the main issue was that he was unavailable until fall and as a result we were dead in the water first 4 games. i suppose what i'm saying is that lester has shown that he is competent with qbs, which in itself is a huge relief. if we actually end up with in program qbs ie developing them in house, it won't necessarily mean disaster. despite the disappointment of this season, the coaching staff has shown they are right up there.

Jayson Platt (would be a solid get)
Jonathan Bibbs
Corey Scott (put up big numbers with Marcus Stokes, holds an offer)
Kenyon Concepcion
Wisky and MSU both have offered Scott as well. Plays D2 ball in Florida and had over 1,000 yards receiving.

As noted above, Iowa has reached out to his QB Coker, who is up for the D2 Heisman, throwing for 3600 yards and 40 TD's.

I guess 6th from the bottom in the passing game is better than bottom is what you're saying.

Unfortunately the stink from the BF era is still hurting us in this regard. No top end qb or wr is coming here. Other positions like TE or on D yes iowa can be attractive option. No matter what we offer to some qb like someone mentioned sorsby cause we offer $5 mill some other school can offer same and he’s picking them. However qb like with gronowski still doesn’t mean we can’t get quality up grade cause unlike wr there is only so few P4 qb spots to be had.

I do agree with thoughts on Lester. He is turning offense around and played to our strengths to score and that meant less passing. But it does feel good to have a competent adult in the room leading the offense again.

Why do some of you think that Iowa can just out bid everyone for the best transfer QB? And then also have $ left to fill gaps at other positions?

IOWA DOES NOT HAVE TOP TIER NIL FUNDING.

Okay. So a little "what if" here...

What if, Warren Ruggierio, the former Wake Forest OC that is now our offensive consultant, gets hired as a new OC somewhere? Hecklinski blindly followed him to Iowa. Will he pack it up and move on with Warren?
I think it's a strong possibility.

And what if he does it on January 16th?
Scary business this is, huh?

Why does it have to be the best? Just have a year's worth of experience. Hoosiers NIL gave just over $2.5M for their Heisman trophy winner.

Use some of the allotted $20.5M revenue sharing money. I don't have faith the staff can pull a rabbit out of a hat to have a 2,000+ yard passer out of what's on the roster considering the past 6 years.

Stop paying for the low end, surgery required QBs. Otherwise another 7-8 wins if they are lucky

Where did that production come from, again? Oh yeah, the portal.

At bare minimum, the next portal QB needs to be a guy who's healthy and available from day one, not chronically injured and looking for a new school to foot the bill.
Duh, can you not read? Hawks can not reply on current roster and hope to be better.

Iowa didn't have the money to get Mendoza. Your back of napkin budgeting fails to recognize that the numbers are all relative. If you want a high level QB out of the portal, you need to offer more than other schools. Iowa can't do that. Indiana can since Mark Cuban starting donating to athletics.

Gronowski was not Iowa's top option. He was the best they could get given the number of available quarterbacks, the needs of other teams and the amount of money they could offer.

Why keep comparing to Indiana when they just flat out have more money to pay players?

First, we have to pay the players who are already here and keep them here.

Then we could use help at DT, WR, DB, maybe an edge.

You can't just empty the bank account on a new QB.

How many times has iowa hit in the portal on any of those? DT they pulled Hawthorne last year, WR (?), DB (?), edge (?). I think the secondary is fairly set, LB is going to be questionable again, DL probably needs depth, but It's time to see some of those RS sophomores step in. Anderson, Chineke, Campbell, Kennedy should all see the field at some point. I must admit, I am always at a loss when people are confident rolling in with Hecklinski or Brown (good lord please no).
