QB controversy

As was said in a different thread Vedral made one play that made a difference in the game. I don’t think he looked all that comfortable. He lined up and ran straight at the DLine 7 times and gained 33 yards. That isn’t a recipe for health or winning games.

Martinez will be the starter when he returns and there will be no controversy. IMHO.
Injured starters get their jobs back, but if the backup played well, the starter is on a shorter leash.

If Vedral starts on Saturday, plays well, and leads us to a win he will become the most popular man in Nebraska.
Obviously, however, when AMart recovers he will be our starter again.
So if that scenario plays out Frost will have a true quarterback controversy on his hands. And if AMart keeps his job, which he will, but continues to be a bit sketchy and we lose some games, how much heat will Frost get?
More importantly, would it also hurt team chemistry?
Do we know that for sure. Coach Osborne policy but can't say I've heard Coach Frost say it. Maybe he has and I missed it.

I cringed today because Frost walked himself into a corner. He pointed out today that it was their cleanest Monday the entire season, then he backtracked and said it was probably because it was simpler, but then went for it and said it was the the day with the best execution, speed, and fewest balls on the ground. Frosty has done his best to respect Amart and dispel any idea of competition but this was either a major slip-up or a warning for AM. The weird thing is...AM's numbers aren't that bad..especially if you take out the OSU game where he had no help. I think it is just Frosty forgetting his setting and being Nebraska honest. He'll learn to become T.O honest before long.

What if Martinez's side arm throws are better than Vedral's? I think that is more than a tiebreaker....

I’m not against Martinez here, I think he’s our beast shot at quarterback. He deserves his share of criticism though and some of those side throws need to stop. He throws more of them at someones feet than I care to see. He’s had a fair number of somewhat easy throws that he screwed up by trying to be cute.

He’ll get his head in it eventually I’d have to assume but right now I’d say he suffering from the dreaded sophomore slump.

I just think he gets glorified on some plays when his throwing motion is unconventional, maybe causing him to think that he should do it more often (he shouldn't). Hoping you are right about his head! GBR!

Yeah when you make those throws they can be spectacular but how many of them are successful?

What I hope happens!
-Vedral starts, looks decisive, and leads us to a win.
-Martinez follows his lead, plays more decisive and breaks his slump.
-Us fans can't figure out which QB is better!
Smokin

Bingo!!! Competition amongst mentally strong players brings out the best in players. If Vedral plays well, hopefully it forces Martinez to raise his game. Sitting over on the sideline for a short bit could do wonders for him. Maybe he will be able to see things more clearly when it comes to decisive decision making.

I agree with this, and if you can get Adrian out of his funk, he could really be lights out. But there is danger in keeping him out there as he tries to solve it, because it also then hurts the rest of the teams swag as well.

Even if Vedral only did a little bit, the energy was night and day different, and the rest of the team feels that, and feeds on it, and they won too, when it wasn't looking so likely. Outcomes matter.

So, I don't mind leaving a guy out there to try and solve his own issues, but at some point, when it becomes a detriment to the team, you have to change the dynamics of that because one guy can't be allowed to drown everyone else.

I think there is enough awareness now about the QB position, that hopefully Scott will do what is best for the team.

I am still concerned about the center position. I cannot help but think changing the lineup there would help the team out this year.

Yes, it's downright scary that we don't have anybody better at center. Our whole OLine is as thin as a sheet of paper. I "really" hope we'll have at least some depth next year.

Gotta hand it to the posters claiming we lose the game if AM doesn’t get injured...

Easy to say that when you know we will never know.

All I have been saying is he as detrimental to this team as he is a positive and needed to grow into the leader people thought he would be. And with people's own eyes they are seeing that on game day. yes, my solution would have been to have him ride pine to motivate him. Vedral isn't as talented, but will bring a different dimension to the run game and won't make mistakes that handcuff this team as a whole. He will also mask the other deficiencies of this offense better than expound on them. He'll throw the ball away or run instead of throwing a pic, sack or fumbling the ball. So play the guy who is less talented but isn't as error prone.

I never called Martinez a bum. Never questioned his talent. Just said he doesn't have "it". Hopefully he heals and turns into the QB he was promised and goes on and gets drafted in the NFL.

But **** the fans who can't be honest.

you ask for examples of when you're being a horses ***, so I'll play along:

what could you possibly be basing these claims about Vedral being not as error prone on? he's played, what, 25 snaps in his entire career? thrown, what, 8 passes his entire career? half of which were in meaningful gametime?

how can you make these unfounded claims about the backup, about whom you know nothing, while at the same time shoveling your horsesh*t about AM all over this board?

There is so much here that can be said, but I won't if you really can't figure out the difference between an NFL MVP having an off game and Martinez and his ongoing situation.
Obviously a different situation... but you don't think you were being juuuuust a bit hyperbolic with saying that Martinez's best days are behind him? As a true sophomore just 6 games in??

I don't think a very good judgement of Vedral vs Martinez could be made even IF he was able to lead the team to a touchdown......which he did not.

I don't think there will be a controversy at all.

IF Vedral comes in and makes this offense click. I don't know how Frost could realistically bench him. I understand sticking with your guy, but the job of a coach is to play the best players that give us the best chance to win right now. I believe 100% Martinez is the better of the 2, and will be the best option long term, but he isn't playing up to his full potential for whatever reason. If Vedral is playing better right now, he has to be the guy until proven otherwise.

Vedral isn't going to throw for 450 yards and 2 tds against Minny. That is around what Amart had in two games this year. Amart is statistically even to his output last year in the first 6 games. Throw in the fact he doesn't have a reliable lineman, RB, or WR core, and is relying on a true freshman to be his main play-maker and that doesn't equate to replacing him. There are a lot of bad qbs in college football...Amart isn't one of them. Your expectations far outrace reality as the qb is dependent on the rest of the offense. Imagine any of our former qbs with this offense. It would be a disaster. Vedral and Amart might even be even right now but the ceiling for a 19 year old Amart is much higher.

Impressive you know all this about Vedral after watching him play for 20mins. Would definitely take this straight to Moos

24/7 was saying that us Husker fans should not to be surprised if Luke McCaffrey gets a shot or the nod vs Minnesota. The players say he’s one of, if not the fastest guy on the team. Wandale Robinson says Luke McCaffrey has an arm on him and then he just goes on about how Luke can make defenders miss tackles in the open field. I wouldnt be mad one bit if we used one of his 3 games on a week when Martinez is hurt...if he can’t go this Saturday. Take advantage of that speed and torch Minnesotas defense. GBR

That would be pretty cool. Would be a good use of one of his four freebie games.

Just win. It shuts everybody up. I'm more than comfortable in seeing Vedral operate the offense against Minnesota.

I think it will be good for AM to watch.

Just like Osborne, a starter cannot lose position due to injury. It's next man up until the starter has recovered. So no controversy!

who said it has to be because of an injury?

right now, Adrian is playing like crap. don't care what his ceiling or floor looks like.

same goes for Jurgens, if he can't snap the ball consistently, then he has no business being a center.. who cares what his ceiling or floor is.. that is for all the droolers to contemplate.

Yeah, I hear ya. Watching the spring game had me blown away....that McCaffrey has that insane acceleration that TMart had. Wow.....he's really something!

Sure Nikki, but it could be because we've got no one worth rolling the dice at center. I don't know.....but whatever the truth is still stings.

I don't see it as a problem if Vedral plays well and there's a QBs controversy. I agree Martinez will start when he's healthy. If Vedral plays well, it might give Martinez a nice kick in the pants to play better too.
