I’ve stayed away from this thread because there’s mostly been nothing but senseless bickering, but I agree. There is no legit competition going on, and for anyone claiming that there is, I’d be curious to know as to how much $ they’d be willing to bet that anyone other than TS takes the most snaps for MSU this season.

We can all sit here and say that KT will have a chance if he suddenly becomes Cam Newton this summer, but that’s just ridiculous. Joe has had a year and a half to see what he has there, and he chose to bring in a 1 yr loaner that is expecting playing time rather than rolling with Thompson. He also sat on the sideline and watched Fitz throw 4 picks against LSU rather than giving KT a snap.

If people can’t see the writing on the wall with this entire situation, I really don’t know what more to say.

i look for them both to play. TS will start and there will be a package for both to be on the field.

Per Moorhead on Jim Rome regarding the QB competition:

....." For us, it’s going to be who throws the ball better, who makes the best decisions, who’s the most accurate, who can push the ball down the field and who can minimize turnovers?”

Also....water is in fact wet. Is there anyone still out there that thinks there is an actual QB competition? Moorhead is indirectly telling us who the starter is.

You're completely missing the point of the people in this thread saying TS will absolutely start the first game. RPO stated it clearly and you glossed right by it. They believe the growing rumor that KT will be suspended the first game. If true, TS will of course start over the freshmen and of course look good against ULL. He'll therefore get another start against USM and look good, and so on and so on. Unless he falls on his face later in the season there won't be a chance for KT to be the guy because he's taken himself out of the equation for game one (according to the rumor). So you can write as many long posts as you want, but that's not the point.

As many long posts as I like, huh? No, you have completely missed the point. I believe there was just one poster who made the point about KT being suspended. The vast majority have taken the opinion that TS was the starter the moment Joe signed him...and/or that TS will be the guy because he can pass so much better. If you read the OP, you will see he even mentioned what Joe said, to set the stage. His OP did not mention being suspended the first game.

I’m just amazed that there’s people out there who have seen both TS and KT play and think KT is better. I’ll say it again, it’s not a competition. TS will be the 2019 QB and KT will have a shot to be the 2020 starting QB.

In 4 years of college ball, TS has not played in a single game where he threw more than 7 times. His average # of pass attempts per game is 2...TWO! I have not once stated KT is or will be the better QB or the starter. I'm simply pushing back on this idea that TS will be the starter largely because he is a better passer. He may well prove to be, but there is simply not enough game footage out there to reasonably say.

If a QB throws 3 passes in a game and completes 2 of those, does that prove he is a great passer? Of course not. IMO, too many of you are looking at just one side of the equation, when to make an educated guess you should be looking at both sides. IOW, KT's completion % has been poor, but does that mean TS is automatically better? Nope. One must look at TS stats as well as KT's to be fair. When looking at TS's stats for evidence he is the better passer, you can't just look at completion % precisely because the sample size is ridiculously small...too small to be statistically relevant.

And when you dive a little deeper, you can counter patdog's point about KT's stats from the SFA game constituting 1/3 his stats...a game where his completion % was terrible. Yet, it is also true that was our very first game under JoMo. It was also a game where Jo was clearly forcing the pass in an obvious attempt to use the game as a way to work on the passing game. IN every other game KT has played he was damn near 50/50 on pass/run attempts. In SFA, it was 31/10. I don't recall much about the game, but I do wonder if there were tons of dropped passes, as we had all season. That should be considered.

Bottom line is, I'm not siding with either QB. I'm just saying I believe our coaches will honestly give both guys an equal chance to earn the spot. Others are saying it's pretty much a "done deal" before TS even takes a snap. I think that's ridiculous. If Joe has already decided on TS before he even puts on pads for practice, then we may be in trouble with our coach, because that would be a disturbingly closed-minded way to decide. I think Joe is a helluva lot smarter than that.

To your point about KT allegedly being suspended the first game, if true that certainly eliminates him as QB1 for the first game, but that's not what this debate is really about otherwise why even post the question? I will agree that if KT is suspended it will give TS a huge advantage for the reason you mentioned....that he is unlikely to do poorly vs our first 3 opponents. It would be hard to remove him as QB1 if he does well vs the first 3. Then again, if we get a comfortable lead vs USM, we may well see Joe give KT significant PT.

In the end, I believe Joe will start whoever he thinks gives us the best chance to win...period. I just don't believe he has already decided who that is.

And if in every practice up until both are eligible to play, if KT throws the ball better, makes the best decisions, is the most accurate, pushes the ball down the field better and minimizes t/o's better...what then? Joe gonna just go with TS anyway, or are you simply speculating a guy who averaged 2 pass attempts per game, never more than 7, and who decided to run the ball nearly twice as often as he passed is the proven, obvious better passer/decision-maker?

Again, I'm not predicting KT will be better or the eventual starter, but I just do not see anything in TS' performances in his college career that warrants this notion that's it's a done-deal...no competition. Some of you are acting like we've got a slam-dunk Tom Brady on our hands despite the fact there is very little we can actually point to to justify that opinion. I hope like hell he is the next Brady/Montana, etc., but to proclaim him obviously better than KT at this point is just not an analytical approach.

Actual performance matters...for both guys.

I agree that there are not enough game stats to determine with a high degree of confidence which QB is better. But, JoMo has seen a heck of a lot more that the few game snaps from both QBs. Unless you're on the team or on staff, you have not seen these guys break down film to know which one "gets it" the most. You don't know how quickly they make decision or how well they see the field on a daily basis in practice. To me the most telling thing so far is how JoMo has dealt with the 2 QBs. KT got no playing time even when the situation on the field seemed ideal to give him snaps. TS got brought in with only one year to play. TS was a part of the Manning camp, KT wasn't. I've seen where a couple folks have praised TS' ability to throw. I've seen 0 rebuttals that KT can also throw well.

I may be completely off but, the words and actions of people that have real knowledge of the two, seem to say that TS is the expected QB for 2019.

Joe Moorhead thinks tommy Stevens is better or else he wouldn’t have brought him in. Gosh almighty man how many times do we have to spell it out for you. Anyone with any football IQ who has seen both play knows tommy Stevens is better. Nobody is saying he’s the next Tom Brady, but he’s better than KT. Are you like related to Thompson or something?

Whole bunch of assumptions on your part. Joe would have brought Tommy in whether he was certain Tommy is better than KT or not. He knows he's a great athlete and that he knows the system. He knows we will be moving to a new starting QB this year, so why on earth would he not want to have another potentially good option for the most important position on the field?

All you contribute here is your emotions and an opinion backed up only by your feelings. You say any who have watched him play know he is better. OK...which games can you reference where we can really tell...where there is enough of a sample size to see he is clearly better? Is it going to be a game where he attempted 2 passes? 4? 7? Is it going to be a game vs Akron or Georgia State?

Never mind football IQ...how about plain ole IQ? How smart is it to make such a statement as yours for a QB who has thrown the ball just 41 times in 20 games over 4 years? Do you understand what I mean when I say, "too small a sample size"? How smart is it to insinuate I am somehow biased for KT when I have repeatedly said I am not saying KT is better, rather that I think the competition is legit and that I think KT will be given as much chance to win the job as TS?

Good Lord, do you really think Joe would not jump on having TS as an option if he had not already crowned him the starter? C'mon, man!

Exactly. KT is not extremely accurate. But one thing he seems to be is efficient. He leads our teams to the end zone. 6 tds in 18 completions. 4 rushing tds on 24 carries. If he can be a little more accurate, it would be even better. His QB rating last year in Moorehead's offense was 190.4. He averaged 9.4 yards a carry.
Last year, Stevens was 4.2 a carry. Under Moorehead, he was 9.4 in 16 and 7 in 17.
My BIL was at Manning Passing Academy and was super impressed with Stevens but I the Key can be really good. We might even see some of Stevens at reciever where he caught 12 passes including 2 tds with Moorehead as OC.

KT got screwed by DM leaving. He would have been a stud in that offense. It's what he was recruited for and what his talents seem to fit. I think KT would have been the clear starter over TS in that offense. But.....we ain't running that offense.

Black, one observation about Stevens stats: when he was called into games, it was usually for a few plays or a series to bridge the gap until Trace M could get back in the game. There was a premium on controlling the ball. It was like watching a goal line offense in Tebow’s freshman year. In other words, Stevens was playing a supporting role and that affected the plays that were called.

What Stevens does here won’t much reflect his role backing up Mcsorley

All 3 of you guys are either trolling or being willfully ignorant on this point. I've repeatedly posted I am not predicting or favoring either guy, so why on earth would I bet either way?

Your side - "It's a done deal already, unless TS blows it and KT blows up like Cam Newton!"

My side - "I believe the competition is wide open, and that TS was brought in to have a real opportunity to win the job."

Your side - "TS is going to be the guy because he is obviously a much better passer. Look at their stats!"

My side - "TS may well prove to be the better passer, but there is nothing we can point to in his entire history of playing college games that really supports this because he averaged attempting 2 passes per game over 4 years. Sample size too small."

Career stats vs FBS competition:
Stevens - 22-38, 261 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT, 136 QB rating
Thompson - 33-67, 447 yds, 3 TD, 3 INT, 111 QB rating

Yeah, nothing at all here to suggest that Stevens is the better passer.

Tommy Stevens did not come to Mississippi State without assurance from Joe moorhead that he was going to walk on campus and be better than his competition. No, he was not guaranteed a starting job. He didn’t have to be. Anyone with a brain knows what is going on when you bring in a grad transfer qb. In the only person’s eyes that matters, TS is the better quarterback. He would not have been able to convince Tommy to come here otherwise. Anyone that does not get this is being “willfully ignorant”.

I agree. Yet we're still left with the main point about there not being enough game experience to declare TS the better passer. What you're saying may provide a reason for why there are so few passing attempts compared to running, but the "reason" is not really relevant in this discussion. If anything, the, "reason" could logically be used against TS as being the better, "decision-maker", in that it would seem to indicate he was possibly just told what to do, rather than read and go through all the progressions.

I'll say again, for those more interested in straw-man arguments...I have no rooting interest or prediction on either. My push-back has been against the idea that TS was a, "done deal" as soon as Joe signed him unless he just falls apart. In response to one of patdog's posts, I also countered his contention about KT being out in part because of his completion % vs SFA. It was a first game as a team in Joe's system. Of course there were going to be more challenges early. Would have been foolish to not expect a learning curve. But here are a few observations related to that game and KT's performance last year:

1. I watched the offensive plays of the SFA game, and also listened to Matt Wyatt's breakdown. I saw 3 dropped passes, and at least 2 passes that were clearly intentional incompletions due to the receiver not creating separation. That's part of the game, but still, adjust for those and you're looking at 16-29 rather than 13-31.

2. KT, though not close to perfect as a passer, had bad overall stats primarily because he came out after halftime and missed on 8 straight passes. Of course, he owns those, and most of them were pretty bad, but it's not as if he was consistently crappy in that game. He had one extended bad stretch at the beginning of the 3rd Q, then settled back down again.

3. In the other, later 3 games KT attempted passes in, he was 0-1, 2-3 (.667) & 3-4 (.775). Those sample sizes are also too small, as were Tommy's, but for those who insist on using them for TS, you have to use them for KT as well, unless you just have an agenda. So, if you're gonna go ahead and use them, then you should for sure acknowledge the fact that the SFA game stats are really unfair to KT for the aforementioned reasons in this post and previous posts, including it was obvious Joe knew we had almost no chance of losing to SFA, so decided to force more passing to see what we could do...not just KT, but the whole offense.

That's correct...means little-to-nothing. Are you being deliberately intellectually dishonest, or are you not aware of the following:

In the games you reference, TS played against 4 teams with winning records in 4 years. KT played against 6 in 2. TS played against 6 teams with losing records. KT just 2. Ya think quality of opponent might have just a little impact on stats?

And again...small sample sizes...it matters. Combining 2-attempts-per-game to come up with an overall total is useless, because not a single one of those games tells us anything about his passing ability. You're adding together a whole bunch of meaningless individual stats, then trying to sell it as legit when summed. Doesn't work that way, and you know it.

And yet again, you are hitting KT unfairly with the OM game where he had to come in without benefit of first-team reps and throw a ton.

Of course, the way you framed it allows you to count Georgia State, one of TS' better stats for rating. GSU has had 1 winning season in the 6 they have been in the FBS...a program that never even had football until 2008. GSU had to beat a terrible 6-6 WKU in something called the, "Cure Bowl" to get that winning record...one of the 4 in 4 years TS got credit for above.

There is simply no meat on the bone you keep bringing to the table.

Ok, now do a search on the grad transfer quarterbacks that did start. I would bet the % is about 25 times higher that they do start. Congrats on finding a couple of exceptions and thinking that means that there is an equal chance of either starting. The fact that you pulled 4 out of the mosh pit of grad transfers disproves your point.

ETA: of all of the grad transfer qb’s I could find there was an overwhelming amount that started and a lot of the ones who didn’t were ones that had multiple issues elsewhere. One had transferred about 4 times. One quit to get mental help because he was having psychological issues. Usually grad transfer quarterbacks start.

From the article where I got the info:
"CONCLUSIONThat makes 15 of 24 (62.5%) top-100 overall QBs who have transferred over that 3-year period. The list of those that stayed is impressive and includes: Deshaun Watson, Drew Lock, Jake Browning, Josh Rosen, Dwayne Haskins, and KJ Costello. The only one who stayed and didn’t ultimately either start for multiple seasons or get drafted in the NFL was Texas’s Jerrod Heard who switched from running QB to WR rather than transfer (Colson, this could be you!).

Of the 15 who transferred I would say that 7 have been busts, 5 have been successes, and it’s too soon to tell for 3 of them."
https://www.uwdawgpound.com/2019/5/...rs-uw-washington-huskies-eason-sirmon-yankoff

You would lose that bet. 6 transfers went on to start at their new schools...not all successes, but I'm giving you every one that got named starter at the beginning of the year, regardless if they got benched early in the season. 6 is not 25 times 4. Of course, not all are grad transfers, but that is not really the factor that matters. What does matter is they were highly-rated recruits who transferred out, then did not start when they were eligible. Congrats on putting your foot in your mouth before actually looking up relevant facts.

In any case, you've been consistently saying a highly-rated QB transfer would not be brought in unless to be the starter. As a general statement, that has been disproved.

Well your article is wrong. I looked up 20 graduate transfer quarterbacks from last year and 15 of them started at their new school. Also, Blake Barnett started for USF last year. If you honestly believe that KT and TS have a 50/50 shot at starting you will just have to agree to disagree. KT has almost zero chance of starting at this point because he’s going to be suspended for multiple games for tutoring issues.

My main question is...

Will Keytaon transfer if isn't named the starter?

We have an excellent and never before heard of problem at Mississippi State right now. We have too many good QBs on our roster and there won't be enough playing time for Thompson, Mayden, and Schrader. Realistically, one of them will end up transferring. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he enters the transfer portal if he isn't name the starter.

I've already acknowledged as common sense that if KT is getting suspended, that changes things. Barnett did not start at ASU after transferring from Bama. Funny how you left that out. Also, you can add Jake Coker & Malik Zaire to the list of QB's who transferred and rode the pine.

20 graduate transfer QB's from last year? I'd like to see your source for that.

In any case, I'm getting tired of this thread, as I'm sure are many others. I'd like to leave it with this:

I don't care which guy wins the job. I just hope they both become the best they can be, and that we start whichever one actually earns it. If that turns out to be TS, I do hope KT gets some decent playing time so it helps him for next season.

That's a very optimistic view. I think our problem was we had no decent QB option for 2019, which is why Moorhead was so aggressive in the grad transfer market.

You can't run your program that way. You bring in the best players you can, and if anyone transfers out because they're not playing, so be it. If Thompson and is the clear #2 and looks to be the starter for 2020, there's no reason for him to transfer. If he's not, then it really doesn't matter if he transfers.

Edited: I’m not arguing with you any more. Hail state and enjoy watching the team this year.

That's a very optimistic view. I think our problem was we had no decent QB option for 2019, which is why Moorhead was so aggressive in the grad transfer market.

Fitz, whether he fit Moorehead's system or not, was going to be the starter last year. He was senior QB who started the previous 2 seasons and he was the team captain. Keytaon may not be the starter this year, but let's not kid ourselves. He's not bad. He's 2-0 as a starter and scored 10 TDs in 2 games. I've seen way worse QBs on the field wearing maroon and white. If he's not starter, its not because he's bad. It's because Stevens because is better.

Fitzgerald was the starter last year because he was the best QB we had. Starters get benched all the time if someone beats them out.

I’ll say this for like the 100th time on this board. Maybe this time it’ll stick. Joe Moorhead knew months ago when he signed tommy Stevens who his 2019 starting quarterback would be. It’s common sense. You don’t bring on a 5th year grad transfer to sit on the bench. I fully expect KT to be suspended for the first game, and then after that he play his 4 games and use his redshirt. That also is common sense considering he has a redshirt to burn. Some of y’all are making this out to be a competition and it’s just not. Will Moorhead say it’s a competition? Of course, he has too.

I think Joe's plan is to most certainly start Stevens and build the offense around him. Like you said, Joe has put in lots of overtime to get TS here because of his experience with the offense. But I just can't see JM NOT having a legit QB competition for the bigger picture. I believe if KT does outperform Stevens, Moorhead will not hesitate to hurt TS's feelings. I hope so anyway. Surely Moorhead wouldn't cut Stevens any breaks.

People are overlooking Zuber. He would already be one of the top 10 receivers in MSU history after 3 years. For all the talk about Stevens, I think Zuber was the bigger transfer for us this summer.
