At the same time, was there ever anyone actually good enough to unseat him? How much of an open competition can you have when Luke McCaffrey is the backup QB? Glad to see an infusion of talent into the QB room.
The whole McCaffrey saga was a cluster f$%^ so I don't even consider him to EVER be a viable starter candidate. However, I don't think Patrick O'Brien got a fair shot, which he would have if Frost/Mario had put some packages in for his strengths, which were not running all the time. Same with Gebbia. If the predecessor recruited those two guys who were more WCO-types and Frost tried pounding them into square holes, doesn't seem very fair to them.

I hope Whipple as advertised can design playsets for Smothers, Thompson, Chubba and HH with their skillsets in mind so the competition is more fair.

Smothers is not a starter, and should never start if we have the talent that we should be getting. If smothers is ever a starter, then that's proof of qb recruiting failure. Besides, we could have Patrick mahomes and it wouldn't matter since our Oline is average at best. This staff needs to focus on the OLine, then D line.
How do justify this comment? Are you at practice every day, watching film of his practices or just repeating what you've heard others say? Arm strength is not the end-all of a QB. There are many successful QB's who relied on timing patterns and throwing to windows. I watched him make throws AM never would have attempted. Smothers has not had an opportunity, given time I think he will be a good one.

2 - DTR at UCLA
3 - Joey Gatewood - Auburn transferred to Kentucky transferred to UCF
4 - Justin Rogers - TCU transferred to UNLV
5 - Phil Jurkovec - Notre Dame transferred to BC - part time starter
6 - Emory Jones - Florida
8 - Jarren Williams - Miami
9 - Colson Yankoff - Washington
10 - Dakereon Joyner - South Carolina
11 - Joe Milton - Michigan
12 - Jace Rudder - North Carolina

2020
2. Luke Doty - South Carolina
5. Ja'Quinden Jackson - Texas
6 Anthony Richardson - Florida
7. Jayden De Laura - Washington St
9 - Jacolby Criswell - North Carolina
10 - Evan Prater - Cincinnati
11 - Jeffery Sims - Ga Tech
12 - Micah Bowens - Penn St

Interesting that the vast majority of these guys have never seen the field or have transferred and are not seeing the field at the new place either.

I just listed the guys that you didn't list when attempting to make your point.
When I went through the list, I took the top guy and the guys relevant to NU. I added Hudson cause that was a name I remember. Very hit and miss.

There is no reason to think Smothers will not effectively compete with the two new guys. But at least there are guys that he has to compete with. As opposed to just hoping it works out with Logan.

Who will be our first QB to enter the portal?

Years of eligibility remaining:

Thompson 2/2
Smothers 4/3
Purdy 4/4
Haarberg 4/4
Torres 5/4

A real log jam with Smothers having 4 years to play 3 and Purdy and HH having 4 to play 4.

Yep, until we can get even an average OLine any qb we start will have rough sledding.

Interesting that the NU player with the highest Rivals evaluation is the player we assume will be second or third string. For comparison sake, the last winning QB for the Huskers, Tommy Armstrong, was the 9th ranked dual threat QB in 2012.
Yeah, don't really care what the rankings say. They're often very wrong on dual threat qb's.

Fields is in the NFL and the kid from Bama won the Heisman. Jameis Winston was the 1 dual threat the year Tommy A. was 9. Wouldn't call any of those misses.
We saw in the championship game what Young could do without Williams, which was nothing. A receiver probably should have won the Heisman again. Lamar Jackson was ranked #17, so they missed pretty badly on him.

Who says a team has to have one QB on the field at the same time. What about 2 Qb's? What about 3? That would sure mess with defenses and their schemes.

On another topic, isn't it time for college football to evolve out of spread and pro style systems? Let's color outside the lines and come up with some schemes defenders can't slow down...
