QB battle thoughts

After watching the spring game and last year as a sample, it's clear that laviano or retig are similar in talent. Retig clearly has the better arm, but laviano seems to be the defecto team leader. Just check out this video and see how Laviano jumps in at the end and teammates respond to him.



To me it's clear laviano edges out retig due to leadership. Retig prob has more talent, and if he can separate himself in the summer maybe that will be enough, but in the end they are both average and won't matter who starts. Our offense, if successful, will be due to grant and our running backs. However, if the receivers don't step- up, defenses will just zone in on grant.

I fully trust ash and staff in whomever they chose to start. fully knowing that neither of these guys will be in the conversation beyond this season. In fact, if oden can pack on 20 pounds this summer, he may still see some playing time this year.

I am hopeful that our defense will prevent some blowouts and the offense will be predicated on shorter passes to our playmakers.

It's hard not to be excited about the future of Rutgers football and basketball right now!

Too early to judge these guys. This offense needs the threat of a qb that can run the ball to be effective. Without that threat, defenses will key in on the rib and stuff the run. The eventual starter at qb will be the one who can run the ball,not just pass. Which one will be able to endure the physical beating that occurs at the qb position in this offense.......that's the gy who will start.

If Laviano wins the spot, he will have proven something. I still just don't see much from him outside of short passes. A couple of long bombs he threw yesterday just seemed to float out there. You could call it good coverage from the RU d-backs or you could say they didn't have much to defend.

I just hope if Laviano wins the spot the coaches are able to create game plans that actually work with what appears (to me at least) a relatively limited ability. He might be the better leader, but that doesn't get us far unless they can find a way to truly utilize his ability.

Bottom line - both CL and HR are likely mediocre at best D1 QBs. Still looks like HR has more upside potential, so may as well go with that. CL has serious limitations.

Neither is game ready but that's ok, the first game is months away. I think both are hindered by the lack of good receivers. None of the WR would be mistaken for Allstate "good hands" players. I fear that every pass is droppable and have little confidence that any can make a tough catch in traffic. Both the qbs and WRs need to spend hours on the fade if they ever hope to use it in a game.

I gave the slight edge to Rettig. Laviano had to overcome a rocky start and Rettig looked more comfortable out there, but neither inspired confidence that they will manage the offense effectively . As Ash repeated over and over, there's a lot of work to do.

It's possible laviano is seen as more of a leader because he was the only QB to take meaningful snaps last season, give rettig some meaningful time and maybe he will be seen as a leader as well...

They both lack in the accuracy department. Rettig seems to have a better deep ball but has no touch on shorter passes(he fires everything in). Laviano arm strength is not there his balls are slow to arrive and his deep balls are way off the mark. But he does have touch on short passes as he's not firing away on the 5 to 10 yd. stuff. My analysis right now it doesn't matter who starts, QB is not going to win us a game if we played next Sat.. But we don't play and it's a long time till we play UW. So hopefully it'll click for one of them by then and we'll be off to the races. The QB competition will continue well into summer as they're not separated by much.

I don't know how many true freshman around the country play right away as a rule, at QB, and I don't know if any of the WR's in this video have gotten D1 offers, but you be the judge. Is Oden going to push Coach Ash to make the tough decision and go with him? Sure at 6'5", 175, he might be on the frail side,but what have been some of the measurements of other QB's across the country, freshman or not, that have been successful running this offense?

Agree, neither QB has proven much separation yet. Laviano has absolutely no touch on his ball and he delivery time on short passes is a real concern. He slowly "floats" the ball out to his receiver in the flats and by the time the receiver adjusts to make the catch and starts to run he will be smothered by tacklers ...particularly in the B1G.
And CL won't have Leonte this year to make acrobatic catches on his wounded duck passes.
Rettig has the Arm but we have not seen consistency in his performance. Summer camp will be interesting .

I think Rettig threw well yesterday .In the 2nd quarter Grant did not catch a well thrown ball for a TD.In the 4th running clock TD jump ball went through pattons' hands.Agudosi dropped a pass to kill a drive in the 4th.Last drive >60yds with pinpoint accuracy..Just a couple inaccurate or desperation as the clock wound down.Long ball TD speaks for it's self
