It appears we've recruited over QA. I had high hopes for him and he would have played some this year in special teams if nothing else.Awfully thin at OLB right now. Alex D, Ferg, Jojo and Caleb will be relied upon big time. Garrett Nelson is going to get a chance to play I would think.
I suspect that evaluations have been made and certain kids aren't progressing and show no signs that they will assume the workload necessary to improve. Frost ain't playing. Why the transfers all the sudden? Players now being told they aren't going to be playing much come fall.
I like that. If the kids aren't showing growth and potential, no point in having them sit the bench and take up a scholarship. Frost and Co seem to not be afraid to tell the kids the truth and have them move on. When you think about it, it is best for the player as well. They didn't come here to sit the bench 4 years. Im sure they want to play. Tell them they aren't good enough at this level, let them find a team where they can play.I suspect that evaluations have been made and certain kids aren't progressing and show no signs that they will assume the workload necessary to improve. Frost ain't playing.
Hmmm. Two players leaving who haven't played much and probably weren't going to. Both leaving within a 24 hour period. Me thinks the coaches have told the players that leaving might be in the "best interest" for both the school and the player. In other words, the roster turnover is almost complete.
I'm sure one on one meetings are happening with every player since spring ball is over. Why the transfers all the sudden? Players now being told they aren't going to be playing much come fall.
IF we've had some pot violations or something similar that would fit. 1% of 150 players is well either 1 or 2 guys.I don't remember the exact quote, but it stood out to me when Frost said something along the lines of the team being 99% bought in. That really was an interesting thing to say because either they are basically bought in, or there were a couple players who weren't there. I think these two departures reflect the 1%.

Listed on the roster as an OLB.Is Joey Johnson an OLB or ILB?
Is Alston a possible transfer portal candidate? Or is he considered still in development.
Whenever I think about the mental aspect of the game, I always find it so interesting that the best players are so comfortable in their role that they don't actually do much thinking on the field. They have trained responses and they simply react. The "thinkers" play slow until they have reached the number of reps their brain needs to allow them to see and react.Nelson already has the body size for it. But the mental aspect of it might be a bit much. And I already figured the starters would be Ferguson and Tannor or Ferguson and Dom. Whichever one isn’t the starter will definitely get plenty of snaps still. Tannor is to good of talent not to be on the field.
Gotcha. I think he is one that the coaches are pretty happy with? Or am I mis-remembering a media members comments for the coaches comments. He isn't on scholarship but I think he's expected to contribute?Listed on the roster as an OLB.
Is Joey Johnson an OLB or ILB?
Disappointing he hasn’t progressed quicker than he has...
Defiantly good use him for depth now..
I'm having a hard time with looking at the last two recruiting classes and seeing specifically who you are talking about? Quay was listed as an outside backer. The only one that I can see in the last 2 classes that supports your statement is Tannor. We have alot of possible OLB's. Looks like Ruud/Chin were the primary recruiters for this position with Coach JD on the mend for the '19 class. It's difficult at this point to clearly identify who if anyone has emerged behind the starters at OLB.It appears we've recruited over QA. Heard from a friend up in Minnesota at the time we secured Alston's commit that Minnesota had backed off. They weren't impressed with his athleticism or his mental makeup. The guy I talk to regularly is pretty level-headed about all things Minnesota Gophers. So when he said that, I set my expectations pretty low.Alston is still really young but also I’ve never once heard his name mentioned by coaches. I thought he mightve been a pretty good sleeper from that class. Seems like the walkons are probably outperforming several scholly guys... that’s not necessarily bad even if it surprises us at times.

He was SUPER high on Benhart and thought he was Wisconsin-bound. Regardless of where he went, he hated losing such a good player to an in-state guy to a division foe.
Take it for what it's worth. I have no other inside information, my low expectations for Alston are solely based off of what he told me..
Since we're already below the 85 limit, I don't see the point in much more attrition. Give the guys another year to show what they can do, and if they're still not doing anything, then they can leave.+Green-Q-=83/85 scholarships filled. Would think that there is a good chance that Hixson gets put on scholarship.
It's pretty easy to see what I'm talking about. The guy has been passed on the depth chart by a walkon, a true freshman spring enrollee, a converted safety and probably will be passed by one freshman who isn't even on campus yet. I don't know if it was work ethic, a weed problem, a lack of physical talent or mental acuity, but clearly he was not a big part of Chinander's plans going forward. I'll predict that Nelson if not starting is going to play a lot for us at OLB this fall. Where some of these kids lined up in the spring game (in or out) is fluid IMO and my expectation is that they'll put the 4 best guys out there regardless of where they've been slotted this spring. I suspect that QA was made aware that there is at least one walk on that would play before he did.I'm having a hard time with looking at the last two recruiting classes and seeing specifically who you are talking about? I also had high hopes for Quay but the system change and his lack of development are likely big factors more than people taking his spot. It appears that he didn't have one
Per Sean Callahan:
"The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Alexander did not appear in a game in his three years at NU and was also not a part of the 110-man Fall Camp roster a year ago."
I think this opens more space for 2020 recruiting class, doesn’t it? It’s already a small class. Need to make it larger somehow...Since we're already below the 85 limit, I don't see the point in much more attrition. Well then we'd have another year to evaluate them and see if they can contribute. There's no use getting rid of them now.I think this opens more space for 2020 recruiting class, doesn’t it? It’s already a small class. Need to make it larger somehow...

Covered all the bases there.Yep, we could see another or few soon...or not at all.
You're allowed to have 3 over the 85 until fall camp starts, right? We're already under the limit, so it doesn't make sense to have any more attrition. We haven't been close to hitting that upper limit yet. Frost has had attrition every spring, so it's not like you can't over sign for the 2020 class, and then you have attrition the next spring to get down to the limit. It doesn't make sense for players to leave now when it's not necessary. As long as a guy isn't a 4th year junior or a senior when they transfer, it allows a team more available scholarships in the next class. If they decide to stick around until December, they may stick around for next spring. In which case, you don't get the benefit of adding to the 2020 class. Its a pretty simple concept.

Always wondered what they saw in Alston. The lack of athleticism kind of stood out when he was being recruited, but quite a few people were excited about him I guess.
