They probably should have been 1 all along. 1 loss BIG vs. Houston conference

With the losses of Houston and Kansas I guess that moves Purdue back to #1 and quite possibly the only team from the BIG. ranked this week
Purdue almost lost to unranked Maryland at home and beat Nebraska. Alabama had 2 dominating wins. I think Alabama will be voted 1. Even though they are high either 1 or 2, their guards and wings are weak. It is Edey and 4 guys. Pressure the 2 freshman full court and Purdue has less time to set up. Freshman will turn it over. Edey has bailed them out but a big center will make it harder for him to singlehandily win games for them. They got a little lucky winning by 1 at Ohio State and at Michigan State. They might be 1 or 2 this week but I think they lose another 3-4 because they have a tougher schedule than we do the rest of the way.

I can see the argument but I think between power conference teams the #1 spot will go to the team with the fewest losses almost always. Bama will get some votes but Purdue will be #1 IMO.

I don't know if lucky is the word. RU was leading in the game for 35 minutes and had a good size lead at half.

I'm guessing you don't consider Rutgers 1-point win at Purdue lucky though?
No. We outplayed you the entire first half and you got the three just before we got the 3 to win at the end. You might be 19-1. But no one in this conference or among the top 40 in the country is saying Purdue cannot be beat. With your upcoming schedule , the next 5 and your final 4 will likely result in 3-4 more losses. No one in the BIG 10 is elite and unbeatable home or away. Big difference than the last few BIG 10 seasons.

It was close 39 to 23 first place votes.and 1527 to 1511 total points. So razor thin margin. I think Alabama’s wins have been more impressive and they are beating good teams by double digits and decent teams by 20 or so. They have a complete team whereas Purdue is almost all Edey. I think they go further in the tourney and I think no one wants to play them whereas not sure teams are shaking in their boots playing Purdue.

I think you will start to see bracketologists start to drop Houston from a one seed and I would agree

Purdue led the entire game (aside from being tied at 0 to start) and by as many as 16 yesterday yet the claim is that they were lucky to win the game that ended up being close and never trailed.

Frankly I might even agree that one can be "lucky" to win any close game but if that is the logic it should be applied consistently.

Yes you were beating Maryland most of the game and it can be argued you deserved to win but you couldn’t be happy with what was happening in that second half and I am sure you had the feeling you were going lose that game.

Nobody in the country is unbeatable. Your #1 Alabama has already lost twice, including to a team that Purdue beat by 18.

I actually don't even care if Purdue is #1 or not. You can argue that either way logically at this particular point in the season. Your logic isn't consistent in the least though.

Never had the feeling we were going to lose. Wasn't happy with 15 turnovers but it's a long season and there will be games like that. 3rd game of the week (Monday, Thursday, Sunday) and your point guard is playing through sickness. Sometimes you have to win when you're not at your best. Nobody is going to win every game by 10+ points.

Purdue has had a number of really close games against this conference which is clearly down from the prior 3 in the Big 10. Alabama like Purdue played a challenging out of conference schedule and went into Houston when they were Number 1 and beat them by 6. Yes they took a home loss to UConn by 15 when UConn was playing like a Number 1 team and lost to Gonzaga by 10 in Birmingham all in December.
But just check out Alabama’s last 6 conference games , beat Ole Miss by 22, beat Kentucky by 26, beat Arkansas away by 15 , beat LSU by 40 , beat Vanderbilt away by 12 and beat Missouri away by 21. They are hammering people. They are playing like a number 1 team . Purdue I would argue has not been doing the same to it’s conference mates as Alabama is doing. That’s the logic. You disagree ?

If you want to make that argument that's fine. Their margin of victory for the last month has been good.

They also have 2 losses, both by double digits, as opposed to only one 1-point loss. And again, lost to Gonzaga in a virtual home game in their own state whereas Purdue beat the same team by 18 in a game played in front of very pro-Gonzaga crowd in Portland, Oregon.

Aside from that, if we're labeling wins as unimpressive, they have unimpressive wins against a now-unranked North Carolina team (2 points in 4 OT's on a neutral court), and a 3-point home win against unranked Memphis.

But you could make a case for them based on beating some mid SEC teams by alot in the past month and that's fine. Part of me would've liked them to jump Purdue to give us a chip on our shoulder. Being #1 is good for exposure and social media but it doesn't help you win games.
