Going to a wedding in May, first time to Puerto Vallarta and first time not going all-inclusive in Mexico.

The answer is - it depends. There are some rough areas, but you need to be foolish or lost to get to them. We were in Nuevo Vallarta 2 years ago and didn’t feel uncomfortable once. We also went downtown and to the marina. If you stick to the tourist areas you’ll have no issues.
