My wife and I are taking the train from central PA and heading to NYC for the first time for the BIG10 tournament. Asking for some insight since I don’t expect our guys to make it past a game or two. Our hotel is just south of Madison Square Garden and looking for some advice in some places to eat, drink and whatever other recommendations you may have. Is Keens the place to go?

Are the coal pizza places worth the effort or overrated? Best Pizza? Also expect to hit the touristy spots that would include the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, Central Park Ride, etc. Is it worth the VIP, priority ticket price?

Any insight to roof top bars in the vicinity.

Please email me at [email protected]

Thanks in advance.

I’m a big fan of Keens, if you want to blow the budget. But, if you want an excellent cheap pizza/southern Italian meal, Lazzara’s is the place: http://lazzaraspizza.com/home.html

Go watch 12 Strong. When you visit One World Trade Center and you visit the America's Response Monument it'll give you a better perspective on the Horse Soldiers.

Also a bunch of Irish bars around the garden for drinking, Stout, Molly Wee and many more. Keen's is very good if you want steak. If you are more adventurous, there is no limit to what you can eat.

It’s going to be cold. Some of the rooftop bars won’t be open in winter. As an alternative you could try Gaonnuri, a Korean BBQ restaurant on the top floor of 1250 Broadway (just a block from MSG). There are great views of Times Square and the Midtown skyline from indoors.

Another idea is Baita, an Italian Alps themed restaurant on the 14th floor of Eataly Flatiron. It’s a fun and unique atmosphere. A bit of a walk from MSG, but could be on the way to or from sights like the Flatiron Building, Union Sq, Sex Museum, etc.

Both of these restaurants are nice but not too expensive. You’d want to make reservations soon if you plan to go at peak dinner time.

If you go to WTC, the memorial is nice and the observatory is very cool on a clear day. The Oculus is worth stepping into. If you go to the 9/11 museum, bring Kleenex. It’s a well-done tribute but it will trigger lots of emotion. In fact, it could really change the mood of a fun weekend. Be prepared for that or perhaps decide to do it on another visit.

I think the VIP sightseeing packages are a rip off. A friend brought her family from Asia to visit and they bought VIP passes to the ESB. They ended up saving very little time compared to the regular line. Realistically if you’re here for a couple of days you’re not going to hit all the places in the large packages. One common mistake visitors make is trying to cram too many things into a short visit. Just figure out what your couple of must-do attractions are and maybe find a groupon if you want to try and save a few bucks on them. Pace yourself and enjoy the city. And then plan to come back to see more.

Enjoy the trip!

For a different touristy "pics from the top of a building", I recommend Top Of The Rock.

And for italian, check out Eataly, in the Flatiron District.

If you want great pizza don't leave Penn Station. There's a place right on the concourse. Don Pepi Pizza. On a scale of 1-10. Pizza plus 11....Ambiance minus 3

http://slice.seriouseats.com/2010/0...c-carusos-rose-don-pepi-ny-pizza-suprema.html

I think they got it right. Don Pepi has a great slice. Rose has a good slice but the charm there is eating your slice in the back among the old dudes drinking beer and watching Mets games.

I haven’t had the upside down slice at Suprema. It seemed gimmicky to me, but reading the review I’ll make a point to try it.

It was a tough visit for my Parents considering I was there that day. They did say they were glad they went.

But nothing would piss off those that did this more than you continuing to live your life as you did before that day...to a man I know that’s what my friends who died that day would want us all to do.

As for the tourist spots...The WTC memorial should be required for anyone that visits NYC. Just being in that spot is an emotion that you cannot describe in any way.
If you are a burger guy...Black Iron Burger on 38/8th is amazing. Budget busting steak- I prefer The Old Homestead in the meatpacking district over Keens but both very good.

Been a long time since I've been to Keens - absolutely loved their single malt scotch collection.

Finally went to Sparks recently and loved it, I thought it was better than Keens. I’ve been to the Old Homestead in AC a few times and loved it too. You think Old Homestead in NY is the best?

Eatly and Top of the Rock are expensive tourist traps. Eatly is kind of cool to walk through; also fun to walk through in that area is Chelsea Market.

230 5th ave is open during the Winter and has Igloos with heaters in them to hang out in. They seat about ten people and you just hop in one that has a few seats and a waiter serves drinks and food. Went two years ago very cool. I have pictures but can't figure out how to post them here. We went to a great restaurant right around the corner from there Ulvio 4 W 28th St, New York, NY 10001. Check out the reviews

Another one of my favorite restaurants in this area is Union Square Cafe. While not cheap by any means always a great experience and a fun bar experience as well.

My suggestion is to look on Trip Advisor or Yelp and read some reviews......

The WTC and Memorial should not be missed. Every American should go and never forget that day.

While you are down that way take the Staten Island Ferry to SI and back its a free ride and you get to cruise right past the Statue of Liberty and get a beautiful view of downtown Manhattan.

Everyone has their own “favorites” but I love Old Homestead NYC...if I have good friends or relatives that want a NYC steakhouse with old charm, it is my go to place.
Now, if they want great steak plus NYC eye candy, Del Frisco

Tourist spot - You'll be within walking distance from the Intrepid Air/Space Museum. It should be on your list.

We went there over Christmas and it was very good. The thing that surprised me too was how friendly the staff was.
I always find that if I lay out some stout lines, and share a few of my "escorts" w/the kitchen staff, most people working at restaurants I visit are super friendly.
