I'm thinking about driving up to the RAC on Wed night to catch the basketball game. It's my first time, so I had a few questions:

  1. I don't need to get a ticket before hand, right? I can just stroll in there and get a general admission seat (and hopefully move down)? Or do fans actually show up your basketball games?
  2. I'm hoping to get there around 6. Where do I get a good beer and bite that's fairly convenient to park and close to the RAC? I'm 44, so something on the nicer end, but is also a 'Rutgers' bar. looking at the map, looks like George St has a bunch of places. But i'll leave it up to the experts.
  3. Do they serve beer at the RAC or no? no biggie, just curious.
thanks in advance

Yes people come to our games. Should be a big crowd but has not yet been announced as a sellout (student tickets are sold out). I expect this to come close to selling out but there are always was to get a ticket. No GA seats, all are reserved. Move down at your own risk

If you are arriving in the area around 6 not much time to stop to eat. Nothing walking distance to the RAC. Depends on where you are coming from. If from 287 than Piscataway is your best bet - Fridays/Applebees on Centennial Ave. If coming from Turnpike/Rt 1 than plenty of places downtown. Allow yourself 30 minutes to get t the RAC and park & buy a ticket.

No beer at RAC but that will change next season.

Wow, I don't know if you realize it, but that's kind of arrogant. Yes, fans do go to our games, and we've already had 3-4 sellouts this year. Sounds like tickets could be tight for Wed. Someone else can advise you on where to go, but keep in mind parking is tight in New Brunswick, and the RAC is on another campus and will take a while to get to. Also, they don't sell beer at the RAC this year: that starts next year.

damn, really? ok, i had no idea you guys were into your basketball team this much. that's great! I made a bad assumption. I guess i shouldn't ever compare PSU basketball attendance (which is miserable) to another fan base. yeah, totally assumed ho-hum i can just walk in there lol. apparently not the case.

I'm coming up the turnpike (Delaware). yeah, i saw there's nothing around the RAC. the map showed a bunch of places around Easton Ave, George St, etc. but it doesn't sound like i'll have much time. that blows. I was trying to get a little Rutgers experience in. best i could probably do is 5:30. we'll see.

alright, that's helpful. glad i asked.

i gave you a wow? sorry man. didn't mean to come off arrogant. i guess i'm simply ignorant of Rutgers' fans enthusiasm for their basketball squad (hey...kudos). Rutgers is typically a perennial bottom half Big Ten squad like PSU, so i didn't think people gave a sh*t. but what do i know. again...my bad. Conversely to PSU/State College, I suppose it's much easier for alumni to attend a game during the week.

I guess coming off the Iowa game and PSU coming to town, good chance of a sell out again.

Yeah, you won't have much time unless you take a half day at work.

My advice is to get tickets today.

Surprised to hear your fans don't support basketball more strongly. But since PSU fans seems to drive a long way to get to football games, maybe it is not so surprising, as many games are during the week.

RU fans will get excited over the smallest amount of success. Considering Men's hoops historical record (finishing below 0.500 every season since the 2005-06 season), most of us consider this year to be a huge success and we are justifiably excited.

Just wait when RU wins 3 football games. HPS will be sold out the following season. If Ash is fired, season ticket holders may storm the field and tear down the goalposts.

You mean the thriving population center that is State College (or Centre County for that matter) doesn't attract a strong alumni and general public attendance for weekday events at the University Park campus? Color me shocked.

How about cow tipping at the college farm...draw any crowds by chance?

Welcome to the RAC. Henry’s Diner will be packed unless you get there waaaay early. For quick bites (no alcohol), there’s also a Starbucks, Qdoba and a Chinese express right by there. The Rutgers Club (beautiful bar/very good food) is walking distance, but you have to be a member. It has reciprocal membership, but I don’t see PSU on the list. It just recently opened since it moved to its new location. I suggest you give them a call.

Otherwise, you’d have to change your plans and go super early to a bar/restaurant in New Brunswick or downtown College Ave area or Piscataway. As stated, next year there will be alcohol and food (hopefully better options with new caterer coming in) right at the RAC.

Go RU!

can't compare basketball and football. Football weekends are an event, and we happen to be good at football. to drive up to State College for a Saturday night basketball game (for ex) in Jan/Feb doesn't have the same appeal. I mean, if we were competing in the top half of the Big Ten, rest assured people would start driving up. but as it stands, who's coming up from Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Philly for a mid-week game?...not many. Me living in Delaware, easier for me to go to a Rutgers/Maryland game...especially mid-week. but I watch every game

you guys hate Ash now? didn't Schiano start off miserably too? honestly, i haven't paid attention. but obviously it wasn't a good year on the grid-iron.

Maybe the hockey team does better at Pegula Ice Arena?

Pegula is always sold out. better arena, better product, and the games are on weekends. I wish I was into hockey more, but nope....i watch our basketball team.

A bit surprised you haven't caught a single game or even half a game on BTN to see what RU bball is like. You're in for a bit of a surprise.

Btw, you didn't ask about parking. Plenty of it at the RAC. Short walk. 10 bucks cash.

no...honestly, I haven't paid attention to any Rutgers games or highlights. don't know why...just haven't. I saw on the scoreboard you guys upset Iowa, but didn't see highlights or anything.

thanks on the parking info

Just wait until Weds to get tixs. There’ll be plenty. And remember If you get lost and need to ask where the RAC is you can also ask for the College Avenue Gymnasium. That’s the common name of arena.:grimace:

Making our annual pilgrimage to a men's hoops game. Don't really want to get stuck in traffic. Can we purchase a Visitor's permit for the day Wednesday and park in Lot 101, 103, or 105? We don't mind walking. We will be driving in from Route 1/Quaker Steak, so we would like to take the back Roads to Avenue E, and then park in one of the lots above.

Except Tastee's isn't anywhere near the route from the NJ Turnpike and Rte 18 (where the PSU fan is coming from). It's in Edison about 15 minutes north in rush hour traffic.

Basically, if you can only get into the area by 5:30 or 6:00, your food/bar options are very limited, as the traffic for a sold out game (this game will be a sellout) is pretty congested around the RAC, and it will take you a good bit of time to get in the arena. You really need to plan to arrive at the RAC area by 6:30 for a 7:00 game.
