It’s likely that one, if not both, come open. Would Mullen leave for one of those? Would they even consider him? What about Hugh?
Man, I would love to see them duke it out up there together.

He would be crazy to leave Florida...

for either of those. When you factor everything, Florida is a much better job. The only benefit of one of those would be not having to play in the SEC to make the playoffs. Georgia is the only thing standing in the way of getting to Atlanta each year...unless of course his old nemeses Freezus lands at Tennessee or USCe.

He’s a yankee who grew up in B10 country. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit. I think Notre Dame would be a no brainer, but I imagine he holds those jobs in high regard

Freeze would be an incredible fit at Michigan. The more I hear it the more it seems like a match made in heaven.

Mullen would fit well at Penn State too. Better than Florida. He’s a B1G coach at heart.

Hugh's a good coach, but I don't think Michigan or Penn State would take him because of his open religious views, and the fact that he's a good ole country boy.

I think the Cinci coach gets one of those jobs. Probably Michigan. PSU will be Joe Brady or some other odd hire.

Mullen may be so accustomed to southern weather that moving back into the snow belt might be too big a step. I sure wouldn't want to do it. He's got it made at Florida anyway.

Maybe Miami or Tampa Bay I could see it. I could also see him with Chargers or Rams. Maybe Cowboys. But not sure how many of those jobs will be open any time soon

I would say before Cohen, there was not that much difference in coaching jobs between MSU, Penn State and Michigan...but alas, Cohen has put us back into the LT era.

He would be an idiot to leave Florida. Great weather and pretty much don’t have to leave the state to recruit.

Don't kid yourself. Penn St. and Michigan are top 15 jobs, arguably top 10. MSU has never been a top 25 job and probably never will be, although we may pay a top 25 salary.

We have never in our existence been the same caliber of job as Michigan or Penn State. Those two programs are both Top 10 winningest programs nationally, we aren't even in the Top 10 winningest programs in the SEC.

His "wrong numbers" and NCAA problems are what will keep him out of those jobs.

I’m calling BS on Franklin getting fired for one bad year during the COVID fiasco. He’s finished 1st or 2nd in the division 4 years in a row heading into this season, which has been a complete cluster17 in the Big 10 in terms of offseason prep and the actual season even more so than the rest of the country. He didn’t suddenly forget how to coach, and Penn State is not some Top 10 job anymore (in fact it may not even be Top 15) that can attract an elite replacement.

Honestly, I don’t expect any Big 10 coaches to get canned based on this year’s results in an 8-game, hastily assembled schedule. I mean the whole damn league killed football for the year and then did a 180 just a month later.

I’ll be shocked if Harbaugh keeps his job if they lose to OSU, but I agree with the rest of your post.

Only way the PSU job comes open is if Franklin takes the Southern Cal job. But I think Harbaugh is just about already fired.

I think the OSU game is irrelevant at this point. He’s already lost to 3 teams that are way worse than Ohio State, and only averaged about 18 ppg in those losses. He’s either already fired, or it isn’t going to happen in 2020.

We were a lot closer to them while Stricklin and Byrne were here than we are now... you guys are thinking 1985 instead of 2014-2020....most of you accept being poor ole Miss state...we have the capability of being a consistent top 25 athletic program(on field performance).. we just don’t have an AD that can get us there. Michigan and Penn State may mean something to a 45 year old, but not as much to an 18 year old.

No. We really weren't. The MSU job is still a LOT better job than it was 30+ years ago, but it never has been anywhere near the level of a PSU or Michigan. And I can guarantee you the chance to play in front of over 100,000 fans in one of the most iconic stadiums in the country (at either place) means a lot to a lot of 18 year olds. And by the way, you can legitimately win a national championship at either school. Realistically, it would take a miracle to at MSU.

Is it really though? I know JWS had a stench when we hired him, but was that really a markedly worse hire than Leach?

I would say we're a top 25 job unless you discount the money once you get over say $2M a year.

There's a huge grouping of jobs once you get out of the blue bloods and almost blue bloods (like say Auburn) where they don't have advantages of a blue blood but a good coach can win. Basically every non-blue blood SEC coaching job other than Vandy, UK, and Arkansas (depending on whether you think their drop off is due to a change in recruiting landscape or just several bad hires) are pretty close. Va TEch, UNC, Miami, Ga Tech, maybe Virginia and NCSt are all in that grouping or close? Ok St. Tcu and Baylor? Just comes down to personal preference on those jobs. Some are a little better positioned, but not a major difference for the most part.

Lots of ways you can judge jobs though. I would prefer a job in an easier conference with less crazy fans and less money with hopes that I would coach longer and enjoy it more. But if you are coach worried about your legacy, and every head coaching job will make you a multimillionaire and make it likely you will become a decamillionaire if you have a little bit of sustained success, then maybe what's most important is a job that will give you the best shot at the playoffs.

Yeas, as in Nevada is closer to New York than California. We are not and never have been close to those two.

How good the job is has nothing to do with who is in the job. Great jobs hire bad coaches all the time, and occasionally a mediocre or even bad job will hire a great coach (they don't stay there for long though). But for the record, Leach was a pretty successful P5 coach for close to 20 years when we hired him. Jackie was unemployed for 2 years when we hired him.

We were a 2014 win against Ole Miss being in the playoff... or even if Mullen hadn’t been scared against 2014 BAMA in the first half away. TV has leveled the playing field. I would rate BAMA and Florida as better football jobs than PSU or Michigan

I agree with what you say, and framed that way yes it is much better. But is it a LOT better job relative to other D1 jobs in 1990s vs 2020?
