Mrs. G and I want to go to dinner before or after the basketball game this Friday night. We can either take the train or drive from Red Bank. We have never been there so we are not sure how the food is at the restaurant inside the center. Any recommendations for places to eat in the area or center? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

definitely take the train.

lots of great places to eat in the area, depending what you like. Dinosaur BBQ is right near the arena. If you're into portugese/spanish food, you have a tremendous selection. My favorite is Don Pepe, which is a short walk from Newark Penn Station on Route 21. There is also Fornos and Iberia on Ferry Street in the Newark Ironbound section. If you're going for the Portugese/Spanish Food, go early, so you can get there in time for the game.

Don Pepe is great but pricely (compare to the others) with long waits for food, so not the place to get a quick bite. So just keep that mind, box out about 2 hours if you want to go there.

The Rock is pretty fancy so there are plenty of places to eat within the area as well.

Try Hell's Kitchen. Great neighborhood joint, reasonable prices, great beer lineup and good food. Fun place.

For the love of God... for any and all reasons, stay away from McDonald's, the nasty Pizza place inside Penn Station or ANY food establishment inside the Gateway Walkway on your way The Rock from the trains if you value your digestive system and/or your underwear.

Just got home from work. I will "digest" all this great info with Mrs. G and choose a place to eat. Thanks folks and enjoy this great holiday and bowls coming up. Healthy New Year to all.

All the above are solid recommendations, except Iberia. Hell's Kitchen might be better for the younger crowd. I will add Spanish Tavern.

I'm 55 and love Hells Kitchen. Don't bury us before we die. We can have fun like the rest of you.
I'm 56 so you're below the Mendoza line.

If the OP drives, and arrives with a monster appetite, do the rodizio at Fernandez Y Fernandez

Bellos is awesome, my local watering hole...John at the bar is a huge Rutgers fan, Manny the owner also a big supporter of RU and an excellent Chef (try the daily specials or the house specials)

Beer selection is second none

If you take the train and are looking for a Rutgers presence this is your choice. John is a huge RU sports supporter, and fellow Theta Zeta TKE. Try the corned beef brisket.

Yeah, Iberia is sh*t now and have been for a few years.

So unless you really like pre-cooked reheated food... stay far away.

I always park on the street east of McCarter for free, stop at the Subway on the Walkway and head in. No problems. $$$$

Keep in mind the game is at 6:30pm. So if you choose to eat before, I don't think you have to worry about a crowd anywhere. We will be going to dinner afterwards.

If you go to Dinosaur you may want to get a reservation, it gets packed on game nights (Devils).
Redds is community table style seating, you order at a window and get the food that way, also gets packed.
Krugs Tavern has great burgers.

Heads up to those not on the BB board. Supposedly Jerry Carino tweeted that the game is an imminent sellout. Might be smart to have tickets beforehand.

Ever been there when it's packed? You think if I can get a 5 o'clock reservation we they would serve us fast enough?

If you go to Dinosaur, I'd get there before 5 for a 6:30 tip-off, they are slowww, and keep in mind it's BBQ so it's fresh and not reheated. If you don't mind sitting at the bar (they have a long bar) that could be an option of you can't secure a table.
Despite the fact that the Rock won't be a sell out (with 18K hockey fans for example), the
Earlier the better ..!

Agreed on Krugs, but its a bit of a hike from Penn Station and then back to the Rock
