Just like all rock, some is good and some is bad. For me, I just say no to older stuff like Yes. Their music is an earworm. I don't know if they're considered prog rock or not, but bands like Helmet and Fragile Porcelain Mice are more my speed.

Helmet is definitely not prog rock.

Yea, it's hard to put a label on them. I've seen them called Prog Rock, Post-Hardcore, Noise Rock, etc. I There were lots of creative 80's and 90's bands that don't fit into a specific category (Primus, Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, etc).

To me, rock labels seem to get convoluted by the 80's and 90's. It's easy to categorize older bands into labels like prog rock, punk, blues based rock, folk rock, etc. by the 80's and 90's, there were lots of bands that didn't fit into categories and people go back and forth over where they belonged. You also had older bands evolving their sound (Van Halen went from a blue rock sound to Van Hagar). What about Green Day? Are they punk, pop punk, pop, etc.? I know some punks that really can't stand Green Day and say that any band with a video on MTV is not punk. How would you categorize Primus? Are they prog rock? What about Tool?

Prog Rock has its place on my Playlist, but to listen to the entirety of Moving Pictures or 90125, I have to be in a particular mood.

I don’t even know what progressive rock would be? Like the Cure or Talking Heads?

That's the difficulty with labeling bands. Bands like the Talking Heads are all over the place in genres. Same with Blondie, who actually had the first rap song to be #1 on the Billboard charts despite being a post-punk or New Wave band. How about this? I'm going to throw out 3 bands. Anybody, tell me what category they fall in to. It's like the old dentist joke...go to 10 different dentists and get 11 different opinions.

Anybody 40+ doesn't need Google to know that The Cure is New Wave, though the album Robert Smith released in 91 was considered "alternative," because everything that wasn't a hair band between '91 and 95 was considered either grunge or alternative to start with.

I'll admit I had to google what the heck you were talking about.

I'm more of a punk/new wave/reggae kind of person. And rock steady/ska. And now reggaeton.

Started with Sex Pistols, Clash, moved to Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, The Wailers, The Beat, then Thompson Twins, Howard Jones. And continuing on.....
