Despite having an engineer father, i know little about engineering majors at MSU. Do we have a product engineer program? is that a thing?

Many companies have product engineers that are responsible for product design & development. Thats not an engineering discipline but those hired are usually MEs, EEs, and sometimes biomed for med devices, biologics, etc.

I can’t speak for all businesses, but I work for a global hydraulics company, and when we use the term “product engineer”, we’re just talking about a design engineer with a background in mechanical, electrical, and design(CAD) engineering. Obviously, the prerequisites can vary wildly depending upon the industry, but I think the answer to your question is that MSU offers all the necessary courses/degrees. We just don’t call it “product engineering” because it’s hard to design coursework around that term when a product could be one of about a billion different things

Product Engineer is more of a functional eng. term usually in Mfg. Product engs can come from any discipline (IE, EE, ME, etc) depending on the nature of the product and the underlying process required to produce it.

I have designed, patented, and brought to market a product. I may be able to answer some questions. Just a FYI, a patent is like a lock on a screen door. It will keep an honest man honest but there are a lot of dishonest people in this world.

My father was an Industrial Technology major ... he used that as a springboard to become a nationally registered Architect before the AIA mandated that Architects graduate from an architectural accredited curriculum

Industrial Engineering is aka IE's aka Imaginary Engineers

Us Industrial Tech "twin tower boyz" usually end up as Manufacturing/Process Engineers which are also referred to as Product Engineers by some companies. Basically we create and oversee manufacturing processes as it relates to work instructions, equipment specifications, facility layouts, among other things. We are also the main ones called, along with maintenance, to keep the plant running. The IE's walk around with a stop watch and help come up with manpower allocations.

Industrial Engineering is certainly the easiest, having the least rigorous coursework, of all the engineering disciplines.
