Pro tips for Omaha?

I’m wanting to take my son for Sunday and Tuesday, but wanted to ask around for tips on travel and tickets.

I was figuring I’d stay in Council Bluff. I don’t care about staying in a hip part of town or anything... we’ll Uber around.

There was a post from 2019 that talked about “flash seats” that’s not relevant anymore that I could tell.

I like the GA outfield but Sunday night on first weekend will be packed. I stayed in Lincoln last time after making late plans- about an hr away. Flew into KC and since Omaha was sold out.

There aren’t any traditional general admission seats this year due to Covid. Everything is a reserved seat in that section. They are on sale through Ticketmaster for $28 plus fees so will run you about $40 a piece. Also no Friday open practice/autograph session and no opening ceremony this year.

Not sure how old your son is, but if he’s interested in the zoo I would definitely look at hitting that up while in town.

The alumni association usually does something on game day. Hopefully they will do that again this year. Pass out stickers/rally towels and I think light snacks with pep take from Cohen etc. so if you are signed up on that just be on the lookout for an email on it.


Also, I think the River bridge in Memphis is shut down for repairs.

Just make sure you’re picking a good spot in council bluffs. I stayed there in 2013 and it was pretty gross. Granted it was a cheap hotel (all that was available - it was a last minute decision to go) and right off the interstate. But everything about council bluffs seemed run down and kinda old to me. A friend of mine stayed in an area in Omaha that I think was called mid town crossing. Seems like it was about 7 or so miles west of the stadium but much nicer area and he didn’t pay downtown prices for the hotel. I’d check that area out.

Try to buy tickets on the first base side of the ballpark. It’ll be the first part to be shaded.

I stayed at a Hampton in Western part of Omaha....only 10-15 minutes from downtown but not nearly as pricey.

It is good that you dont expect to be in the hip part of town since you plan to stay in Counciltucky.


All seriousness- its really cool you are going and taking your son. Thats a really neat trip.

We played the Sunday night game last time and tickets continued to drop throughout the week because I think you get fewer locals on a night before a work day after a long weekend. No gen admission may change the demand though.

I am driving this time bc the last two times our games got pushed and we had to fly out after only one game.

added: take a wiffle ball bat and ball to the Rosenblatt site if you have a kid. Hated to see Stadium View Cards closed.

This ticketmaster **** is going to suck. I've been trying to buy tickets for the past our and can't get my order to go through. I hate ticketmaster.

The only downside to being a MSU fan is we drive up the demand for CWS tickets. Ours are by far the highest price. I've always bought mine the day before. Those Saturday and Sunday games will likely be the highest other than championship tickets. If you want to save money you may get outfield tickets for Sunday and buy something better for Tuesday.

Depending on the age of your son - this is the hotel I'm staying at. It's nothing special, but has a great indoor pool area for kids. We stayed there in 2019 and they loved it. Plenty of parking south of the stadium, maybe 10-15 minute walk. Seems like it was $10 or $15. This also drops after the opening weekend. So you may see some for $20 on the weekend that are $5 - 10 Tuesday / Thursday.

For anyone driving, if you want even more baseball - Royals have a home series vs. the Red Sox this weekend. I may try for that 3pm Saturday game. And Cardinals have a series vs. the Pirates next weekend.

You can always take the trusty Cannonball run route... Texarkana, to Fayetteville, to Oxford then to Atlanta.... then cut north.

I'm torn about that, too. I would not be going through Memphis, but through Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska and would be 10+ hours. But, would be cheaper than a flight and easier to change. The Omaha CWS weather is always a crapshoot.

Flights to Kansas City from Jackson aren't bad. Its a 2.5 hour drive from there.

I'm an Omaha local that posted a couple years ago. I hope some of these tips help:

- If you're flying because of the Mississippi River bridge and have never flown into Omaha, the airport is pretty manageable. I'd say it's not quite twice the size as Gulfport, but definitely more than twice as busy. It's also incredibly close to TD Ameritrade, very convenient if you happen to be staying downtown.

- If you're staying in Council Bluffs, the interstate driving to get to downtown Omaha is short in distance, but might be a pain in the *** because of the never-ending work they're doing on the roads there. Be prepared for some tense driving, and there aren't really any good detours because you have to cross the Missouri to get into town.

- The Olympic swim trials are wrapping up this weekend, so if you're here early be prepared to see a lot of people. At least, a lot more people than you may be used to being around since the pandemic.

- Shameless plug: if you like soccer, we have a pro team that's in the third division of the U.S. pyramid. The team is away this coming weekend, and our supporter's group hosts watch parties with pretty good drink specials at a place in the Blackstone District (about 3 miles from TD Ameritrade). We probably average around 50 people or so. Find our group and ask for the guy from Mississippi, and your first round is on me. We have a home game on the 26th, and if you guys make it to the final series and don't have to play that day, stop by our tailgate and I'll make sure you're taken care of.

How is the Aksarben Village area and out just N of I80 ??

Thanks for the tips, everybody! I got our travel and hotel locked up today.... staying in Bellevue which is only 10 miles away from the stadium.

I went ahead and got Sunday tickets based on your recommendations, and I sure wish I had last night. State has driven up the prices, for sure. Not a big deal, though. I figure we'll get some primo ones for Tuesday...

Aksarben Village is definitely a nice mixed use area. You probably won't grow bored of your food and drink options if you're there for three or four nights. It's the last nice little area like that before you start getting into suburbia. UNO has a huge presence there, so the neighborhood definitely skews younger. As for restaurant recommendations (my personal preferences):

- Blue is probably my favorite sushi, you're probably somewhat close to one of their three locations no matter where you're staying
- Pitch is a great restaurant in the Dundee neighborhood (look up 50th street, north of Dodge), their happy hour appetizers are very popular
- Leadbelly is a unique gastro-pub kinda place. It's in the Midtown Crossing neighborhood somebody mentioned earlier (also happens to be where I live). If you're bringing young children, Midtown Crossing is doing movie night on a huge inflatable screen in the park on Monday nights in June (family friendly)
- Omaha is slowly accumulating a lot of local breweries with tasting rooms, look up Scriptown, Kros Strain, Pint Nine and Brickway

Not sure about Omaha, but I’d expect there to be tons of drivers during the CWS... but where I live, I’ve been picked up in less than 5 minutes after requesting a driver....

It's been more like this for me... Specifically when I landed in Omaha in February at -8 and Hertz at the airport was shut down because it was too cold for the attendant at the parking garage. The gave me an uber voucher to get all the way across town to a stand alone Hertz dealership. I then had to ride 45 minutes west in the second seat of a minivan masked up with no air blowing and the driver was some dude from Turkey that was talking to his PO the whole time.

Outside of specific areas near the stadium or....

downtown (Old Market) the best area to stay in is the West part of town (West Dodge) if you don't mind taking Uber or whatever to the games. Some folks have places in the Old Market area that they rent out (Airbnb).

Anybody ever stayed in Bellevue before? I’m not familiar with the area, just noticed hotel options are a little cheaper and it’s only about 20 minutes away.
