I think we broke UConn that night, at least for now. 111 wins in a row coming in to that game, and they’ve obviously still been good the last few years, but haven’t even played for the title the last three years after winning it four years in a row going into that game. And I don’t think they’re even projected to be a Preseason Top 5 team this year. Granted, still way better than most programs, but I think we damaged the mystique of UConn being this unbearable force that night. Now they’re still a very good team, but one of quite a few really good teams.
Also, I don’t think we beat them in 2017 without them beating us by 60 in 2016. Vic and our team learned a lot from that experience, and I also think UConn entered the next year’s game overconfident. We jumped out to a big lead early, then had to withstand a run from them and play them neck and neck in the 4th and OT.
And yeah, the call on Dom was disgraceful, but thankfully we had enough time to overcome that moment. I wish the same could be said for the following year when Marina Mabrey tackled Morgan William at half court and the refs swallowed their whistle.
