1. Be a coach who instills mental and physical toughness as part of the programs baseline culture.

2. Demand and coach effort. Stay on guys who don’t give it in practice or games.

3. Runs an adaptive offense that fits our personnel on any given year.

4. Can maintain recruiting where it is or bump it up a little.

5. A coach willing to change philosophy or style to get the best results on the field.

6. Have a team that other teams dread playing cause we gonna hit you in the mouth every play on both sides of the ball.

7. Doesn’t use fancy quotes or talk about ring sizes.

I would also like to see a guy that isn't afraid to make wholesale changes as needed to his staff if something isn't working. I'd also prefer a guy who doesn't insist on calling plays. Those guys don't always see the forest for the trees.

Not a must have, but I want to hire a defensive coach who will keep us consistent on that side of the ball and let the offensive coordinator run the offense. We can be competitive with good defense and mediocre offense, not so much the other way around.

I used to think this too, but I think the time to have done that would have been when we hired Moorhead. Mississippi produces so much defensive talent, and if you look at our best teams, defense has always been a staple. Why not go with our strengths?

When Mullen left, I think that would have been the perfect time to bring in a Diaz or Collins or Venables to stay consistent on defense and not meddle too much with offense, therefore 'adapting' by proxy. However, at this point, our offense is so jacked up you almost have to go with an offensive guy.

I think a good strategy would be to rotate offensive and defensive hires.

I suspect that most SEC coaches aren't afraid of making changes when needed. "When needed" is just in the eye of the beholder...

Same here...

And I'd honestly like them to be heavily involved with their qbs. So basically Mullen v2 if he's out there.

One thing that always held us back was a legit SEC caliber qb. Until Mullen showed up with a history from Bowling Green, to Utah, and to Florida of working with great college qbs. Then we got to watch him win with Chris Relf before turning out the two best qbs we've ever had. Moorehead was a hot name because of that Penn State offense, but he had a limited track record in real football.

Recruiting, defense, and whatever else? That comes from hiring a good staff. But we ain't winning without a guy who knows what an SEC defense is like and can produce a qb and scheme to deal with it. Maybe Appalachian Sunshine is that guy, but he ain't gonna get any better under Joe.

Well first you have to look at our best runs in our history (at least recent history).

2017-2018: 8-4 and 8-4, really should have been better, but the defense was lights out, with offense being serviceable (factoring out Moorhead's tinkering) and SEC's leading rushing quarterback, lot of JUCOs.

2014-2015: 10-2 and 8-4, all-program quarterback, pretty damn good defense but not lights out, Mullen offense

1999-2000: 9-2 (modern day would be 10-2) and 7-4 (8-4 today), lights out defense, serviceable offense, lot of JUCOs

1980-1981: Great defense, innovative quarterback

1975-1976: Somebody else will have to fill in here, but we were pretty good, the Bruce Threadgill years, so we had a good running quarterback.

Seems to me the staple is a damn good defense with a good run-based offense and a good dual threat quarterback, with SOME JUCO help but not too much, because too much results in big gaps like we are seeing now and what we saw after 2000. Everything should revolve around that.

Maybe rotate the offensive and defensive hires based on situation.

Good additions.

SEC experience/knowledge

Good to great defense even if proxied by a strong DC hire or the HC be a defensive guy

Heavily involved with QBs and typically utilizes dual threat guys

Putting together a good staff mixed with great recruiters and X and Os guys

Napier checks a lot of boxes.

He was a QB in college. And he was a QB coach at Arizona State, Colorado State, Clemson, and SC State.

5 years at Alabama, he knows what the SEC is all about. He has also recruited heavily in MS, AL, and LA- that's our footprint.

Wow....so many amazing suggestions. I hope you guys email Cohen all these lists so he has some good info on running a college program. You know the MSU website has contact emails. No doubt could use all the help he can get.

The suggestions are just as amazing as the state of our football program and/or team. It must be nice to blindly go through life assuming every person who holds a job is suited for that job. Ignorance is truly bliss.

Well sure...

I'd take a guy with Conference Coach of the Year awards from two G5s, who was coming right off an undefeated season in which he took a non-automatic qualifying team to a BCS bowl for the first time ever, and had just coached a qb who was the first overall draft pick.

Outside of that... I'd prefer someone with a little SEC experience and preferably with time working for a successful coach.

What's truly amazing is how a handful of you guys truly believe your opinion matters. I'm sure he does throw them straight in the trash can. He is smart enough to realize how useless those lists are. " our next coach must be a disciplinarian, he must be able a quarterback guru, but also be defensive minded. And have a connection to our glory days, which was when ??? I think I will cheer for Joe until they replace him with the next loser and then cheer for him.

I guess the glory days must have been in the 40s. From 1980 to 2006 we average 5.1 wins a year. Dan set a new bar for this team at 7.8 during his years but he is gone.

if we are talking about Cohen, he better start listening to the fan base rather than ignoring it or he will be sitting in the LFL with everyone else rather than being the AD.

How do we feel about Jim McElwain? He dealt with death threats at Florida, so getting his feelings hurt by this board shouldn't be an issue.**

Also, he's undefeated against sharks.
