Post-Tournament Thoughts

Hawks wrestled fine! This team is not good enough and that's a problem with the program, but the guys went out and wrestled well for the most part, so happy for them. Especially happy for Gabe Arnold after a crazy year. That's a well-deserved seat at the dance.

Drake looked good and should place again. I don't see a way he can win, but I hope he goes out wrestling to his capability. Very good Hawkeye. Same for Caliendo. Bailey had an outstanding tournament. Very happy for him. Up and down from PK. Avenged a loss, but took two more to guys he beat. BK quietly had a very good weekend. And Angelo looked healthy enough to hang with the big dogs. Very curious what he'll do if he loses before the semis.

Most of this team will be very draw dependent. Could be the difference between finishing 4th and 12th. Looking forward to a fun tournament. The 133/157/184 brackets are worth the price of admission by themselves. Hope everybody enjoys some good wrestling and praying the officials don't muck it up.

(PS - got banned by the PSU moderator for telling him he doesn't understand the rules so new account, though he'll probably ban this one too. Sensitive little fella).

Tom refs Jr high and JV they think he's some rules expert. He doesn't do college and never has. He's very arrogant

Tough seeds, rough start but finished fairly well. Brands ain't going nowhere and U I won't buy him out. I hope he and the donors do a lot of hunting this off-season and put out a team that will sell out Carver.

Better than 3rd year without a champ, distant fourth and not wrestling above their seeds!

Program is in a place where you have to have two frames of mind: the overall critique and then how the team does according to the expectations they've set for themselves. Today was not a bad day in that regard.

I think considering the health or lack there of within the lineup, the bad seeds we got, the biased officiating, and the quality of the team itself, it was ok. It wasn't super. It wasn't a complete flop. It was just ok. And as we all know, for this program ok doesn't cut it. Ask Jimmy Z about that.

Today was a stronger day than yesterday. We may get all 10 weights to NCAA.

But post-tournaments thoughts looking at the big picture are a gut punch.
- We haven't had a B1G champ in three seasons.
- Our best wrestler, and only finalist, was majored in it.
- We finished a distant fourth.
- If we doubled our score and then added ten points, we tie Penn State.

I think this is best way to put it. I'm happy with how the boys wrestled, but still dismayed with the lack of top end talent. We have only three guys who are national title type talent in the current lineup, 4 if you count Kueter (again talent, not results so far), and there is only one guy with any shot to win a title this year on the team: Angelo coming off injury. Would love to be proven wrong.

Angelo has the ability if healthy. Caliendo has that ability but unfortunately behind probably the best guy in the country. Coming into the season Ayala had that ability but not now. I haven't seen anything from Kueter since starting college that puts him in that category. Unfortunately next year will be worse . The "high end" recruits he has lined up are too far out to be a factor anytime soon and I honestly don't have faith they will develop into much without at minimum fresh coaching at the assistant level.

I worry that Angelo isn’t going to have the end of season conditioning needed to beat the top guys this tournament.

That's not why you were banned lol. It was funny though about ref requirement and all. We understand the frustration and you are a good guy to have on the forum I've been there and done that. Got banned for life on the old hr board being a knucklehead in march.
