post summer workouts report

The players are gone from campus for a couple of weeks, and reports are trickling in about how individuals performed, and I'm proud to continue beating my drum about Dontaie Allen, who according to two witnesses was hands down the best deep shooter on the team. Maxey and Juzang also had no problem filling it up, with Quickley and Sestina hitting a high rate as well.

Allen can't show everything yet as his conditioning post surgery is slowly but surely coming along. He could be ready by season opener. There is no talk of redshirt.

Maxey showed well above average prowess in defending, so along with Hagans the backcourt will be a menace. Maxey also hit a high shooting percentage from everywhere on the floor.

Whitney and Brooks are interchangeable parts. Coach says one of those two will break out but as of now they are pretty even in capability.

But alas, Richards is still Richards, at least so far. EJ is much stronger and assertive and knocking down some jumpers. Coach hopes he has a PJ Washington type improvement for his soph year

Recruiting tidbit: Staff will visit JJ Traynor, from Bardstown. Apparently the kid has come out of nowhere to start turning heads due to summer play. 6'8 forward. I'm sure some of you have seen him play, but if not recently, then reportedly his game has rocketed in the last few months. Now getting offers from decent Div 1 squads.

Appreciate the interesting summer report. I always take summer reports with a grain of salt because they don't reflect how playing time will be allocated during the season. By that, I mean that a player cannot show his strengths unless he gets onto the floor for meaningful minutes. Cal has said that he progressively cranks up his emphasis on defense as the season progresses. By the time the SEC season begins, a player will not get off the bench in contested games unless he is a strong defender. Defensive prowess does not get tested in the summer pickup games, but they are interesting nonetheless.

yeah he's totally unranked not even a one-star because he would have been totally overlooked until this summer so I assume he'll at least be a four-star based on summer play

On Traynor, it's my understanding the staff will visit him and say they will be monitoring his senior season. So it's iffy but still the coaches are interested.

Seems all good news with exception of Nick. I wish it would click for him. He could be such an important piece to the puzzle.

Yeah I will stick with my prediction that the starters are Hagans/Maxey/Brooks/Sestina/EJ against MSU unless we add Dante then they are Hagans/Maxey/Brooks/EJ/Dante

I think it's a feel for the game with Nick. It hasn't been something he's done since being 5 or 6 years old. It's not something that can be taught imo.
I hope it begins to develop with him, because his physical tools are just unreal.

I had a friend who was a golf instructor. He said he could teach anyone to play golf. One day he took on a mother and daughter for a series of lessons. After about three weeks he asked them... have you considered soccer? Cal is a great developer of talent but sometimes the specific gene necessary for development is just missing. Seems to be so with Nick. I suspect most fans want him to succeed. He’s a faithful Wildcat.

Hopefully Dante sees the opportunity to start for us and makes the right choice. If he comes, he starts at least by the end of the season.

Not counting on it, though. I'm figuring on Montgomery starting at the 5 and going small.

Looks like we have the guns this year to be a good 3 point shooting team.

He is a good kid. I think that personality and motor play into it, too. He doesn't seem to ever really get after it, or take things seriously. His teammates like him, though!

That's fine, if you want to be basically a four year backup and then play overseas. That's where Richards is at this point.

If wants the NBA, what he is doing now isn't going to cut it.

I would suggest he get his diploma then try to make some money overseas for a few years.

Alas... no mention of anything with regard to Hagans and improved shooting. I fear I’m going to be watching opposing defenders daring Hagans to shoot the ball again this year.

You know, there really isn't much that Hagans has to do to fix his shot. It's not like it's broke. His form is great, he just needs to get in the gym and develop muscle memory. Put up 500 to 1000 shots a day. That's what all great shooters do.

I hope we get Dante. I hope one of Nate/EJ really develops a thirst for banging in the paint. I hope Nick figures it out. With what we’re looking at right now, if Cal gets past the Sweet Sixteen with this frontcourt I will consider him one of the best in-season coaches of all time.

Hakeem Olajuwon did not play basketball until he was 17. Tim Duncan did not play until he was 15.

It's more than feel for the game with Richards. He seems to fundamentally lack the quick reaction ability that is necessary to thrive in basketball- which may be why he seems to have no understanding of how to play. He may have a body that looks like Olajuwon or Duncan, but he isn't able to utilize it to do much on a basketball court, at least not against top-level college talent.

Well, that's about right, in that I got that from Jack before he posted it on KSR. So yeah. Thought you guys on here would want to hear about it. On Hagans, he has been assigned a trainer to work on his shot. Who knows how that will turn out, but with five good outside shooters it won't matter all that much.

Nick Richards is a five-star athlete with a five-star body and length, a three-star motor, two-star hands, and a late start in his life in the game of basketball. Richards is the kind of player that takes longer to develop and has a harder time developing consistency, but his ceiling is still NBA if he works hard enough. Cal took Richards out of a hs basketball program that has been good to UK, and he did it at a time (as we now know) when many highly ranked players were being paid by the big shoe companies to sign with other schools. I think we need to be patient with Nick and see what he can do as a junior with a little more opportunity now that Travis has graduated.
