I've seen a lot posted on Pope's offensive strategy and frankly it's one of the most exciting things he's bringing to the table as far as I'm concerned.

But I haven't seen a lot about his defense. What does he run? Does it work?

I don't know about the ratio of man to zone (will probably differ here with the level of athlete we'll bring in). What I've heard is that Pope presses and looks for steals in passing lanes. Sounds similar to Pitino, as far as I know.

His Ken Pom numbers haven't been great but I have read they like to press. I am telling myself it's because they are pressing with slow, unathletic kids of Warren Jeffs that it hasn't worked well for them. 😂

Posted in another thread but his team defense efficiency was #40 in the country last year. For reference UK was #211
I mean being better than we were is all well and good, but pretty much everybody was.

I don't want to just be better than the last 4 years. I want Kentucky basketball to be feared by the rest of the country. We need real defense for that.

It’s hard to judge because 4 unathletic white guys and one African American with decent athleticism …… I mean that’s already starting off in a defensive dilemma

Right I mean it's tough to judge what Pope has done. Read the threads on his limitations to recruit at BYU.

It's just about insane any coach has success there.

But I love his offensive strategy and the difference in players he can get now should make a difference.

BYU's offensive rank the past four seasons:

2021: #37
2022_ #88
2023: #89
2024: #22

I have no context to provide, since I've never watched BYU play. So just sharing the statistic.

I'm pretty happy with the aggregate of those numbers, coming from BYU. That averages out to a team in the 60s, and I think that could stand to be a good deal better with actually D1 talent. And it for sure will be better than. Our defense the last few years.

I have read that he uses some of Pitino's stuff, like to pressure the ball and force turn overs. I bet one thing you will see a real man to man defense and you will see some zones when needed as well as some full court pressure. I am willing to bet Cal gave up more free baskets under the basket in one game then Pope will give up all season.

Coaching at BYU reminds me of Django Reinhardt. Having the first criterion of recruitment be Good Mormon is starting behind the 8 ball. So to speak. That Pope was able to win as many games as he did is an achievement.

I mean his entire game sounds like it's Pitino's 90s stuff modified to today's offensive philosophy.

It does, sounds like he may have added a bit of the princeton offense to his game plan. I am willing to bet you actually see a UK team that runs a back door play or two. He sort of does the same stuff Bama does, 3 pointers or lay ups.
