I like Pope as a person....I truly do. He's a good guy.
BUT when a team continually doesn't put forth max effort on defense for 3/4 of a game, it is an indictment of the coach's inability to instill discipline, motivation, and effort.
A coach who can't or will not correct that, simply cannot be the coach at Kentucky. It's that simple.

Gosh I am a huge pope supporter, but this one was bad!! Played Jasper waaayyyy too much. Jasper was terrible and his family can go suck an egg for crying about his playing time. A tree can play better defense than him. Moreno and BG were both awful too. But the reason why we lost was because of missed free throws. Is that really the coaches fault? The whole JQ thing has absolutely killed us. He was supposed to be our Somto but instead he became our Sharpe.

Win the conference
Win the conference tourney
Go to Final Fours
Win titles

these are the only things that matter at UK. If you can’t win final fours and titles at least win conference and conference tournaments… Pope has shown he can do none of the above.
He never won a NCAA tournament game before he got here. How could anyone hire him?

100% agree. These are the 4 tangible "winning things that matter" one can do at UK.

All of our best coaches were tough SOBs. Rupp was the Baron of the Bluegrass, the Man in the Brown Suit. Pitino was a hard nosed New York City guy that took no **** fro anyone. Cal, as much as he frustrated everyone, was hardheaded and a brash. Cal spoke his mind even if it pissed you off.

He has terrible feel for the game. We will get a lineup that gains back momentum and here comes back the lineup that put us in that hole. He can kill a run faster than anyone..
Bingo. You are 100% right. He's the worst I've ever seen. He has no clue who can play the game and who can't

Mark Pope couldn't motivate Tony Robbins.

Just the name Kentucky is not enough to get top players anymore especially when you have a mediocre coach that can't recruit. If we don't get someone to this coaching staff that knows how recruit some of these young top rated players plus put a team together we're going to become the next Indiana. Nobody knows Mark Pope nobody wants to play for Mark Pope but they do Rojon Rondo.

Jasper had a bad run tonight

Too many minutes and he plays matador defense
You can say that again. He was awful. He is always awful. Too weak,..no defense,..can't shoot. And Pope acted like we had to have him in there,..while Denzil got splinters in his rear end from riding the pine. I don't understand.

You have to have brass .... to coach here. People say "who would want the job if we fired Pope". My belief is the type of person that would be good at this job doesn't compare himself to Pope and wouldn't care who coached here and failed. You think a young Pitino or Cal would care who they followed. They both think they are the the greatest to ever coach. That what it takes to be good here.

I loved when our guys thought they were James Harden and took step back threes in critical parts of the game. That is terrific coaching and control of your team. Happened all night when we should have been attacking the rim and go to the free throw line, so we could miss those also.

There is no accountability on this team. None. No accountability to the coaches or to each other. That starts at the top. This one pushed me over the edge. First Barnhart has to go. And a new guy outside the university needs to be hired. Not one of Mitch’s flunkies. And if the new AD wants a change from Pope, and he probably will, Im good with that. I’ve watched 10 years of people not being accountable for a damn thing except how much money they can line their pockets with. It’s time that ended.

Possibly because Aberdeen dribbles the air out of the basketball until he jacks up some ill advised 3.

Both are awful on defense as well and thats not what we need out of a PG.

C'mon, lol. Pope knows there are knuckleheads on this roster he needs to jettison. Have some faith that he's going to hit the portal hard to try and get some proven experience back in here.
He hit the portal hard this year and brought in exactly what you are seeing.... The embarrassing losses and 3rd and 4th stringers at every position which costed 22 million to boot so he overpaid to bring these players in. Then to add the cherry to the pie we have 0 has that's right 0 recruits coming next year! For those that say he needs a 3rd year it's just delaying the inevitable!

Mitch wasn't the force behind hiring Cal. Doubt he’d even consider Wade because of past allegations.
Yea I'm aware that Barnhart had nothing to do with his hire. I'm wondering what makes a Wade hire so questionable considering we hired Cal. Hopefully once again Mitch will have no input on the next hire, whether he's here or not

My point is Mitch wouldn’t give Wade the time of day because of his past. Now if Mitch follows through on his retirement plans, and if the job opens up, then he might be considered. Not happening under Mitch.

I understand it’s first game. But we have returners, we’ve practiced, we have veteran transfers from winning programs, we’ve played two exhibitions. It’s probably time to call a spade a spade - this team can’t shoot. It’s disjointed. It’s not as deep as we thought. They even look lazy. Something’s off. No leadership? No strong voice? I don’t know, but you’re 100% correct / this is concerning for sure

this is my post from November after Nichols game. This was easy to see from the jump. I posted similar right after Gtown exhibition loss. We are just not good. Terrible roster construction and no leadership.

When things are down the little nuances of coaches reveal themselves even more. All of Pope's major flaws have been cited on here, and rightly so. He leaves much to be desired.

One sort of pet-peeve of mine with him, that likely wouldn't bother me if we were dominating, is his penchant for giving a five to all of his players during timeouts. Sounds silly, but it's very elementary. This is something that you see alot of middle school coaches, or high schools girls coaches doing during timeouts simply to keep their teams upbeat and "happy". You simply don't see this kind of rah-rah stuff at this level, especially not at Kentucky.

When do you see Pitino, Hurley, Sampson, etc making sure to give a five to each player at the end of a timeout? You don't. They bark out their instructions and that's it, feelings be damned. Small pet-peeve, but rather revealing in my opinion.
