Tough, tough loss last night. Here is a quote by Myles about their starts. With that in mind, what would you do to light a fire under the team to begin the game? Press? Change the line-up? I think starting Young might get the energy up, but I'm not sure who to sit, Mathis, Ron, or Yeboah. Thoughts?

"We have to end this trend. I mean, we’re obviously not trying to come out and be down by that much,'' said Rutgers center Myles Johnson, who finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. "I think we come out, fall behind and go, ‘Oh man, we gotta come out to play.’ And I think we need to have that, ‘Oh man, we gotta come out to play’ in the beginning.''

i mean, how do they not think that anyways...this is division 1, this is the big ten, this is on the road, this is playing for your tourney lives..i'm not sure I can fully understand how this isn't the mindset every game for the whole season, let alone last night and the last few weeks...

If under control, Young can be a disruptor on D and O. When he drove under control last night, good things happened.

I keep looking for the player or players on this team who gets pissed off and lights a fire under the team. When we're in the midst of a first half funk, the entire team looks like their manhood has been taken away. The body language is terrible. If you have a "C" on your jersey, you shouldn't be waiting for the coaches to get on your *** at halftime.

If you're good enough to stage the kind of second-half comebacks we've seen, you're good enough to have won at least half of the past 8 games. I think so much of this is mental/attitude.

Yeboah with 3 points in 30 minutes. He needed to come up bigger on the offensive end in a big game. Shouldn't have come down to the no call.

Tell the guys they are playing a double header.
2 - 20 minute games and they have to win both

Changing the starting lineup could change starting results... for the better? who knows.

I even suggest that for PSU... start people who have not started like Mulcahy. I would love to start Young also.. but I think he and Mulcahy should play separately. I'd love to use fresh Young and Mathis to hound opponents' guards and press... so I'd have them come in when opponents' starters hit the bench.

1st 5 (half-court O and D)

Mulcahy
Geo
Yeboah
Harper
Myles

2nd 5 (pressure D and transition O)

Young
Mathis
Geo
Harper
Carter

Geo, Mathis and Yeboah, Harper can rest each other as needed

People are also being ridiculous blaming Pike for not having the players at the top of their game for 40 minutes. It just doesn't happen, even with the best teams. Just look at last night - was Chambers a lousy coach because his team didn't sustain their first half excellence? What was wrong with MD until the end of the game last night? Sometimes it comes down to a bit of skill - the MD guy got very lucky his shot rattled in, while Yeboah missed a much easier shot - now one could argue, down 1, we shouldn't be settling for a trey there and that's valid. Basketball is a game of runs, and where I think coaches can have more of an impact is in shortening the bad ones and lenghthening the good ones. Like maybe starting Myles/JY to get out to better starts and not taking 2 of your best guys out after just having caught up to the other team (or at least, not going to Duke over Myles).

He keeps turning down open 3s.. don't know what that is
Agreed he had 2 or 3 good looks and passed them up I don't know if that is the coaching staff but being he is our best 3 point shooter he needs to shoot those; I think he even turned the ball over two times after he passed up the open looks

They need to get Geo off the ball at the start of games, he can be our closer at the end. Any combination of JY, Mulcahy and McConnell for the first 36-38 minutes and make Geo our closer. 11 of 17 starts at PG, he has had 2 or more turnovers. 9 games off the bench, 8 turnovers, 2 games with 2 turnovers. Geo should start, just not at PG.

Geo and Mulcahy are our only 2/1 A/Tov rate in the year.

Last 4 games, Young has 11/3(5/0 last night), I think he has that natural ability to be that guy, if given the keys to be 3/1 or 4/1 kind of player like Simpson, Winston, Cowen, Carr.

Young, Harper, Mathis, Baker, Yeboah are right now your best 2 way players (offense and defense). The key is finding more players that fit this profile.

I think Caleb has to join that group and his dunk and mid range game may be the next piece to bring along vs Maryland and Purdue.

I can’t speak to if other coaches manage their team properly or not because I don’t every game but people treat Pike like this IMO because he is managing the roster poorly and it’s clear.

If he distributed minutes better and paired guys together who seem to play well together and the team still came out flag than no one blames him.

Absolutely gut wrenching road losses and last night’s was I think the biggest gut punch. However, this group is special and gritty and never gives up , so although mentally you would think it will bother this team, I think it does the opposite and make them want to win away from the RAC more than ever .

I posted in another thread some things that must change and they are to change the first half narrative, change the defensive intensity, and get to the line more. On the road especially , Coach seems to want to set up the offense and methodically run the offense and is doing so because of his fear of guys losing their men in transition defense. Most teams in the country run similar offense, high ball screen, pick and roll, multiple times, hi horn sets, and some run a lot of pin downs and curls to set up shooters. Duke , Kentucky and Kansas run similar stuff with Kansas running more curls, but we happen to be in a league with tremendous shooters and Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Iowa and Northwestern run a lot of pin downs and curls . A majority of teams struggle running half court offense just like us , and a few posters have said that our offense sucks but we are still 78th out of 353 teams in offensive efficiency , so lots of teams are worse. It should be clear that once we go uptempo , our efficiency increases , we ratchet up our defense, get more steals, jump into the passing lanes are more energized. While we are doing this and making our comebacks , Pike’ fear, our inability to play transition defense has not materialized and we are able to make up second half deficits . So one way to change things on the road especially is to go more up tempo as I think we have more players suited to that style in Geo, Jacob, Ron and Montez and even Caleb.

That solves the other huge problem, the lack of defensive intensity especially on 3 point shooters . Ohio State first half, Wisconsin first half and Penn State first half we were down 15, 13, and 18, primarily because we left a lot of players unguarded at the 3 point line. BAC even pointed out to me , it happened in the St. Bonnie’s game , which is true, and the first half of the Michigan MSG game and even the first 15 minutes of the Northwestern home game . We know how to guard the 3 and make the adjustments in the second half during our comebacks , so it really is not a big adjustment , just a ratcheting up of the defensive intensity to start the game .. The uptempo game will fuel our intensity and get our defense kick started . Even coming out in a full court press to start the game would be a wrinkle to change things because those games listed above we came out with not enough intensity to guard the 3 and dug ourselves a hole. Pike cannot expect teams are not going to shoot well and has to be pro active and cause them not to shoot well.

Finally, we are not getting to the line enough, our guards have to do a better job of creating contact and playing through it. Montez has to pull up for a short jumper instead of going all the way to the hole when 1-3 guys are ahead of him , but he is one of our better drivers and he has to pick his spots and then go hard when he gets a seam. Same with Ron , he has to use his ball fake more and get on the block for more shots where he can draw contact. Geo has to turn his body when driving towards the defender to create contact , then finish with his hands away from his body. We should be going to the line more and seeking contact and not avoiding it like we usually do.

Completely agree with Pike being afraid of getting burned in transition on D but the pros outweigh the cons. When the other team pushes, they are more likely to take a rushed shot and our length comes into play with steals and deflections. It's not like we aren't giving up wide open 3s in our set half court defense anyway. Play Young more and push the pace. Attack the rim. Attack the offensive glass. We are so much better when we up the tempo and are aggressive. The team feeds off of the energy and seems to sleep walk through half court style games
