Said this in the GDT thread but we basically got twos playing the one position, I noticed we really don't recruit at this position and being a point guard maybe I'm biased, but a good one can make the difference in closing out a game.
I never thought JY was a true point guard, he can play the position as can Geo, but I think JY is more of a two guard in the mold of John Starks, that's who he reminds me of.We have a point guard. Pike took the ball out of his hands.
He needs to add a traditional point guard. Period. He went after a couple of transfers last off-season; he needs to do the same and come up with someone this time.Actually, Paul is a point guard playing out of position because Pike likes his length. They added a point guard in this class in Jalen Miller, and Caleb was recruited as a point guard out of high school. I expect all 3 to play the 1 at different times next season. Pike likes guys that can play multiple roles in offense.

Paul and Jalen will be those guys. He had Paul playing the 3 and defending the 3 or 4. He’s a 1 or 2. Mag and Oskar need to progress so they get provide minutes and the 3 and 4 spots. Let Paul run the show while Jalen gets minutes off the bench. He needs to add a traditional point guard. Period. Paul’s ability to be an effective point is diminished by our offensive style. On a team that runs a true offense, I think he’d be great at “setting the table” and controlling tempo. With what we run (or rather, don’t run), we need a point who can get dribble penetration to break down a defense and create for themselves/othersPM is a pure PG that isn't being utilized properly
Paul should be playing point guard. He isn’t ready though to play major minutes there.Paul’s ability to be an effective point is diminished by our offensive style. You would have to think it would be an attractive destination for a high quality PG... possible starter or big minutes for a B1G team coming off a tournament appearance and winIf Geo and Young are gone Pike goes to the portal and hopes to find the right fit with a PG. if he can’t find a fit then he goes with what we have.

That's why I question if Paul fits what we want in a PG, he's a unique talent in that he really doesn't have a set position, he can do a little of everything. If Geo and Young are gone that's a lotttt of minutes at the 1 gone. A lot of time on the ball. I can see a Paul Caleb Miller running point at times. If Miller isn't ready to give meaningful minutes we have no smaller guard. This is also a concern possibly defensively. Remember how much we struggled against quick PGs keeping the ball out of the lane pre jacob?
I don’t mind putting the ball in his hands more but hopefully we add a few more offensive sets next season. If not, at least his corner 3 appears to be a positive developmentPaul should be playing point guard. He isn’t ready though to play major minutes there.

Paul can't stay with quick PGs so either Miller or a transfer PG who is quicker to match up and compliment Paul with no Geo or Young if they leave makes senseThat's why I question if Paul fits what we want in a PG, he's a unique talent in that he really doesn't have a set position, he can do a little of everything.
That’s what he did in high school and what he did at times during the season, dishing to Cliff and Myles. He averaged a triple double in high school because he drove to the basket so much. Not many point guards get double digit rebounds a game. But he’s also a kid who understood his role and knew Geo and Jacob were running the offense. He didn’t try to do too much. Move him to the 1 and you’ll see him attack the paint more.Paul’s ability to be an effective point is diminished by our offensive style. Yea I’d agree, that’s my hope too. Barring the addition of a proven point the offense will absolutely have to evolve in some wayWith the players we expect to be leaving gone, I think we run more of an actual offense in which PM can be an effective facilitator. Just my opinion.

You can switch him to guarding the 2 or 3 on defense. Caleb or Montez could guard the 1.Paul can't stay with quick PGs so either Miller or a transfer PG who is quicker to match up and compliment Paul with no Geo or Young if they leave makes sense

Most of his assists come out of the post though. You’re right that he’s great at feeding Myles/Cliff but I’m not confident he has the ability to beat starting B1G guards off the dribble with moves/quickness. I think no one disagrees that Paul could play point guard and effectively, but that we might be better served with a natural point guard. You can switch him to guarding the 2 or 3 on defense. Caleb or Montez could guard the 1.
He has improved so much in one year shooting the 3. He isn't as bad as the boards think as a set shot catch and shoot 3 point shooterIf his role on the team is hitting the corner 3 we are f’d
We should have went to Paul in the post more. It was working tonight. He passed and scored. Big believer in sticking to what is working. Make them stop that playMost of his assists come out of the post though. He was backing down bigger defenders because he was the wing. His speed might not be excellent but he can use his height to counter that. Iowa wouldn’t want 6-1 Bohannon guarding him. He’d take him to the hole or shoot over him. Most of his assists come out of the post though. JY was playing great in the 2nd half.He was breaking down their defense & hitting shots.Suddenly we go into a shell & he does not see the ball until the very end?He was responsible for our lead & we take the ball out of his hands.Stay out to our shell & run the offense as we were & we win going away. For the most part Geo has not been the guy for this entire year.Memories of days of yore do not carry the day. This stings.been saying all year JY is our best player, but hes not a point guard. Geo, despite his shortcomings, is our best PG

If Myles and company return as we expect, the depth chart should look like this:
1- Mulcahy, Miller
2- McConnell, Mathis
3- Jones, Palmquist
4- Harper, Mag
5- Johnson, Omoruyi, Reiber
They should try to add some help at the wing or the 4.

I disagree. Mainly because he has not been given the opportunity to show that he can do these things on the college level yet. I think he’ll surprise quite a few people. There is no chance Paul can play 28 to 29 minutes at PG at this level....this isn't HS, it's the Big Ten.
Paul has contributed based on what he's been able to contribute, which is a shooter from the corner 3, which is essential in any offense. He's worked hard on his shot from 3.
To be a PG at this level, you have to be able to drive, pull up and shoot, or get past your defensive player to score. He doesn't have that ability to beat his defender, 1 on 1, at the top of the key and is not a pull up shooter.....he has not shown that as a part of his college game to date.
Miller and my guess is a transfer portal or JUCO will be the backcourt next year until more guards are added for the 2022 class.
