I think Wheeler is a great team player with assists and shooting but at 5' 8", is he really the best we have on the team?

Just seems like we are at a great disadvantage with length and rebounds, with him playing #1

Yes. It is very clear that he is the best PG we have on this team. He can play against the best and quickest. If he were on Bama and they cleared out for him, he would've gotten straight to the rim every possession against us. He's not unreal, but he is definitely QUICK !!

the job of the PG is to make sure the 4 starters have more points than him

Wheeler leading the team in scoring but we score 52 points in one of the worst losses in the Calipari (or entire UK era).

Think about that.
You apparently didn’t see the game. Yet still spent that much effort arguing against one of our best players. You aren’t the the sharpest tool in the drawer.

Think about that.

coming from your posts on here over the years I'll consider the source

We need a PG that can get the other players engaged and leader on the court. If anyone wants the PG being the leading scorer on the court with the NPOY, 3 point shooters and some gazzelles at the 4, then I'm not sure what they want from basketball

Anybody taking shots at Wheeler today is too stupid for words

see anything to praise in a team effort scoring 52 points and one of the worst losses in the UK era?

by all means, put it out there
It wasn't wheeler, he was in he only one with any nuts today. You clearly know absolutely Jack about basketball or probably sports in general. Go play Fortnite and leave the sports to the rest of us.

Looked to me like Wheeler was the only guy who truly came ready to compete and battle today. The fact that there are still folks trying to scapegoat him after this one shows just how irrationally biased some of y’all are against him.

No

The game has changed. PGs are play makers and have to be able to score and make shots.

Facts. They did on Wheeler all the time and now he is the only player that can do anything. They all look like jackass's and it's hilarious 😂

no,

but if our offense is starting with 7 seconds on the shot clock, its a challenge to the entire team

Is that on Cal? OK, I'll accept that argument, but Wheeler is out there and he knows that puts the team at risk

You’re making a fool of yourself by continuing this line of argument.

I know it’s become the knee-jerk reaction with a few of you guys to try to blame everything on Wheeler regardless of what actually happened (sometimes I wonder if you actually watch the games before doing so), but you’re way off base here. Wheeler’s the only guy who stepped up today.

He is the best we have and he fights, who else today played as hard as he did and did anything. We are not going to win ANY game when Oscar gets is first and Wallace gets two in the first 4 minutes. If we didn't have Wheeler, I'm not sure we could bring the ball down the floor.

I don't care how much I get ratio'd on this, I'll die on this hill

We have a ton of talent, and the post I responded to was "he is a very good point guard and we are lucky to have him"

We need much more from the PG on this team.

I would like a more complete and better PG. Our only other PG option went 1-13, 0-6 from 3, and only didn’t miss more shots due to picking up 2 fouls very quickly. As usual who has the thread about them?

Frustration has meant fans fall on crutches that aren’t logical. The other one is Cal’s offense. Somehow it became archaic and awful in the off-season as he had a top 5 offense just last year.

Not the biggest wheeler fan but he was the only reason we stayed in the game today as long as we did. Give the kid props for his play during the first half at least. 2nd half bama received coaching at halftime and a game plan to attack us the 2nd half. Our players got cal (ballgame!!)

It seems obvious that Wheeler is the best option at point for this team. That also explains how bad this team really is.

I really don't remember a total lack of talent on a UK team unless it was Tubby's last 3 or 4 teams.

Even the couple of players with UK talent are not fits for this team.

Do you really think we have a ton of talent?

We have 1 NBA player on the team. There are only 3 5 stars(Cason, Collins, and Livingston). 2 of those had significant doubts before ever playing and those have been validated.

We have a 5’8 PG that you’ve spoken against in this thread.

We have a top 40ish transfer from Illinois State that is a volume scorer on a bad team due to his plentiful shortcomings.

We have an injured Iowa role player.

We have Jacob Toppin that has never shown to be a high level player in high school, URI, or UK.

Adou is a development wing with no offensive game.

Ugo is one dimensional as a post defensive reclass.

Yes we have the NPOY in Oscar. But you could also say we have a guy that had significant issues at WVU, off-season surgery right before the season, and is noticeably less energetic perhaps due to cashing in on NIL.

This is ALL Cal’s fault let me say as the roster is his responsibility. Think of it as an NFL GM, he has a lot of busts on this team.

its doesn't appear that way on the court but on paper this is a team that should be easily in the top 20 and competing

Fwiw ... Wheeler may well be the ONLY legit point guard we have on the team. Rivals lists Cason Wallace as a "shooting guard" ... apparently, PG is not seen as his strength.

A realistic, well-stated post. Thanks.
Yes, we are not highly-talented and Yes, it is Cal's responsibility. Not really sure how we got here, quite frankly ... but here we are. It sucks.

The performance today was on the players collectively. Alabama dragged the court with them with no fight.

Maybe there is a "players hating the coach" issue. But, today, we ran the same offense we have been running...and we shot so poorly that we had no chance to win...even with very good defense in the first half. Alabama just whipped their *** all over the floor...at every position. A lot of soul-searching should happen for the next few days.

What is your point ??
If we have to count on Wheeler to be our leading scorer/shot taker we’re in deeper **** than we already are. He’s a serviceable point guard but taking 16 shots. Not a recipe for winning

I agree with this. He would be most happy to shoot 5-6 times a game. He wants to be the straw. The problem is we do not have any drink.
