While Paul has great court vision also a height advantage over most of the guards guarding him which he needs to learn how to use more to his advantage we will not win consistently if he is our main point guard he just has too many deficiencies number one his past first mentality lets him pass up wide open shots some from even 5-8 feet and then when he takes those shots he is not even set because he all of a sudden has to shoot because he is stuck in no mans land
2. He is not fast enough to beat any opposing defenders off the dribble which is what a good point guard does beats his man and kicks the ball out for wide open shots or takes his man all the way to the basket and draws a foul or makes the layup.
3. Once the ball gets in his hands the offense just stops and this happened last year all too often
4. He is just too slow to defend opposing guards as he was repeatedly blown by whoever he was guarding even in the Lehigh game

I am not sure what the answer is as Geo just loses the ball too much; I would have liked to have see Jalen Miller to see if he can handle the ball at least for 5-8 minutes including seeing his supposedly great defense which we will definitely need

If Jalen Miller can handle the ball and defend as well as we’ve heard, he should be an option.
It’s a position you can play as a freshman.
People are saying why should anyone expect a lightly recruited player to break into our rotation… there are D-3 guards out there not recruited at all with good handles who’d help us.

I am really not overly worried about Mulcahy, he is the Swiss army knife and I still believe that he played a very good game IF you subtract 2 of the 4 turnovers....he probably should have taken a couple of those shots when they were 1st available, but 11 shots is probably where you want a starter to be, if he's going to play 28 to 31 minutes.

You need Mulcahy to score double figures to offset what more teams are going to do vs Mulcahy on defense and he is going to wind up being a net negative if he doesn't score.....as long as he takes care of the ball, 9 to 11 shots is probably where you want him to be OR you need him to find Jaden Jones and Hyatt more to boost their shot attempts from 3.

At the end of the day, I still think RU could have 6 players score in double figures in more than a few games. I see Hyatt landing around 10PPG, Cliff is definitely going to be in double figures and Geo and RHJ will too.

If you can get Mulcahy to 9 to 10, then the last piece is giving Jaden Jones 8 or 9 shots a game....you can get this many shot attempts spread out, if you don't have 14 to 15 turnovers a game and keep that number closer to 10 or maybe 11.

IMHO Paul is more of a wing/forward player on offense that just needs to keep improving his shot. I trust him with the ball at the top of the key in a tight game and can shoot over or back down to pass/shoot over smaller guards.

His game is not breaking someone down off the dribble. The more shots he makes the more his qualities get accentuated.

On defense he should not be guarding other guards in my opinion. His man should be a small forward on the block or stand still shooters.

That being said he can lead a fast break.

Mulcahy cannot be the primary ball handler bringing the ball into the front court. Just not good enough. He can facilitate plays once the ball is in the front court. But having him bring the ball up the court and then start the offense is just not going to work. I also don't have a solution to it as this will be one of our week points all year. At this point Geo is our best option.

i'm more concerned with who is going to man up the quick guards we go against with Mathis and Young gone

Tyson Walker MSU
Jaden Ivey
Curbelo
and don't forget Fats Russell is now at Maryland, if you haven't seen him play, he will be a pain in the ***

PM is the best point guard we have. Despite the flaws folks have pointed out, he also showed a post-up move I hadn't seen before. If he can hit a three pointer or two per game, work that move as the opportunities arise, and hit the five foot bunnies, he's good for ten points a game. Can he break down his defender, no. No one on our team can.

Defensively he can get beat by a lot of guys--but he's not alone in that.I think his off the ball defensive, though he sometimes he helps too much, is fine.

We don’t need post moves we need a point guard that can create, score, facilitate, and defend other guards in the big10…
