Undocumented workers cannot obtain a Social Security Number (only U.S. citizens can), but they CAN obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number that they can use for purposes of W-2's, income tax returns, etc. I believe the acronym is "ITIN." I can't recall what the first "I" stands for, but I think it is "Individual." I'll have to check on this in the morning. It's late right now, and I've got to crash.
Edit: I was correct. Here is a blurb from the IRS website concerning ITIN's.
