Playoffs for western NC

what are the chances that all the fires could move playoff games back? Especially in swain county and the surrounding areas. I know Cherokee has had a few sporting events canceled already and we are in a code orange for air quality.

I am guessing they'll weigh the options when Friday comes closer. I just know it isn't getting any better in Graham. I heard they'd issued warnings about limiting your outdoor activities. I know some construction crews with the Boys Club were allowed to leave home early because the air is harmful. I just know here your going to smell like beef jerky by the end of the day and my car smells like an ash tray every time I crank it up.

It's not that bad in Haywood or Buncombe so far.Both Haywood teams will be playing at home but several teams in Buncombe want or will be playing away..Might be one alternative.

Would they move games to the lower seeded schools field if the air quality doesn't improve, or possibly move games affected to a neutral field if one can be secured. I'm assuming this hasn't been brainstormed before. They have already pushed everything back one week I don't know if they can push them back any further. I hope it doesn't end up like 1918, no State Champion because of a flu epidemic.

Exchanged emails with NCHSAA office and was told they are monitoring the situation, but at this time the games will go on as scheduled at the scheduled locations.

With widespread wildfires and smoke in several areas of Western North Carolina, many of you have inquired about the football playoffs scheduled to begin on Friday nightacross the state.


All games are still on as originally scheduled. After consulting with experts at the National Weather Service as well as local emergency management officials and local school personnel at affected member schools, the decision to proceed as planned was affirmed. The forecast calls for winds that experts say will help disperse some of the smoke in the area tomorrow.


Commissioner Que Tucker had a conference call this afternoon with involved parties and announced the decision to move forward as planned. The NCHSAA will of course continue to monitor the situation and remain in contact with schools hosting games in the affected areas. If any unexpected adjustments need to be made, we will keep you apprised of those decisions.
