Plenty of predictions throwing out most likely winner, but who are the biggest wrench throwers you see?

One that stands out to me is Breese Central in 4A south. Plenty of talk, especially in central IL, about the inevitable SHG/Rochester rematch in the semis. Admittedly, my take is based just off historical program performance as I haven't seen Breese this season, but I know they are well coached. Last year they were scoring in bunches and took Rochester to the wire losing in OT when the Rockets went for 2 on their first possession.

Recently the only times they haven't won 2 or more playoff games were when they ran into 4A runner-up SHG in 2021 in round 2 and in 2023 when they ran into 4A state champ Rochester in the same round. Rochester has eliminated Breese 3 times during that run with other playoff losses coming to SHG as noted and Mt. Zion who was also runner up in 4A the year they eliminated Breese.

8 of their 9 regular season opponents are playing in the playoffs - albeit with two of them being 2 win teams and outside of a 9 point loss to Centralia and a strangely out of place looking 14-7 win over Jerseyville they easily handled all opponents. Not bad for a team that returned only 7 starters at the beginning of the year (4 OFF, 3 DEF) with 21 total seniors returning.

They didn't get an easy draw - expected matchups against Metamora, SHG, and then Centralia if they make a run - but given past performance I don't think they can be dismissed out of hand. Has anybody seen them this year?

Who else out there can make a run?

Rochelle in the 4a North.

The 14th seeded Hubs are 5-4 and played a challenging schedule. They lost to Geneseo, Morris, Kaneland, and Sycamore. Only the Morris loss was decisive. The others were all by a TD or less.

A win against one of the smallest 4a playoff teams Friday (3-6 IVC) could lead to Week 11 and 12 matchups with CPL schools before likely running into Coal City in the Quarterfinals.

Might not necessarily fit the criteria you’re looking for, but I don’t think people are giving SJO enough credit. Could see them beating any team that comes out of the north bracket in 3A

I agree. They are a solid team with some quality wins. They would matchup much better vs. Byron than IC. Definitely a favorite in the south but could pull of a W vs. Byron.

I am not sure what qualifies as a spoiler, so I will make up my own definition. 1) Any team generally not considered one of the top two in their class but could possibly win the championship. 2) Any team generally not considered one of the top three in their class but could possibly make it to the championship game. 3) No team is eligible if they are currently ranked #1 in their class by EdgyTim, Massey, the Media Poll, or MaxPreps.

8A - No spoilers
7A - Downers Grove North
6A - Nazareth
5A - St. Francis and Kaneland
4A - No spoilers
3A - Richmond-Burton, [Mt. Carmel is a very long-shot to possibly make it to the championship game.]
2A - Johnston City, [Maroa-Forsyth's loss to Williamsville has taken them off the radar but they are still a small threat.]
1A - Camp Point Central

Normal Community and Huntley have decent chances to make it to the quarterfinals, which would be a great season for those two programs.
