Complete BS. Why can't it be written into their scholarships that if they are fit to play, they play or they have to reimburse the school the scholarship money for that year?

I don't like it either, but the quest for huge $ by coaches, ADs and conference fatasses has done way more to ruin college athletics than players opting out of bowl games - or NIL, for that matter.

Bowl games are irrelevant. If coaches can bail on their team before the bowl game for a better opportunity, the players have a right to protect themselves and their draft stock and bail too. Besides, it gives opportunities to other players who may have been stuck behind a great player and gives them an opportunity to play against a high quality opponent.

I get both sides. What if in the workforce you were had a very good chance to get a $200,000 per year raise and that your last 2 weeks of work could put that in jeopardy. Would you go to work for those last 2 weeks? It would be a very hard decision to make. I dont blame kids for opting out. Hell they put their bodies through hell for these Universities to make millions off of them. All for a fan to sit back and criticize.

Think about it, if you had the winning powerball ticket would you play poker with it?

Its a freaking glorified scrimmage. Nobody should tell them they have to play. It is up to each player. I wish they would all choose to play BUT I understand why they wouldn't and certainly do not want anyone telling another person they HAVE to play in a glorified scrimmage when they could get hurt and lose millions.

My beef is that the university has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in you to give you that opportunity and then you opt out and bail on your teammates. It's ruined the tradition of college football along with the portal and NIL.

"the university has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in you"

And the Universities make millions in return from them. Whats wrong with taking care of yourself. I really doubt their teammates have issues with it. I don't think anyone is going to bail if they were in the playoffs. These games are meaningless.

Common sense. Studs have so much more to lose by playing in a meaningless bowl. I don’t love it, but definitely understand it.

I used to think this way but don’t anymore. No need someone to ruin their future playing in a meaningless bowl game. Wouldn’t feel the same way about the playoff games.

I get why they do it but it's selfish and something that was never a thing in the history of college football up until recently. Remember when players used to take out insurance policies on themselves instead and still went to battle with the guys they bled, sweat, and and fought with for 3-4 years? Being a "team" loses out to individual gain and why college football is a shell of its former self. The portal promotes that. The NIL benefits them even though you need teammates to get you your success and I'm sure most don't share their money from it.

I'm with you. There's a lot I "get" about modern college football, I just hate most of it.

The NFL is daddy here and all that matters to those who can make a living being a part of it.

If you want to take college athletics back to the 1970s, when conferences actually made sense and coaches weren't paid ungodly salaries and given golden parachutes by ADs who shine at giving away other peoples' money, I would be all for that. But don't expect the players to live in that era while all the old farts around them become multi-millionaires.

NBA and MLB free agency, NBA allowing zone, college basketballs 1 and done rule, college basketball portal, NFL rule changes focusing on more offense, college football portal, NIL, MLB will eventually add the DH to the NL and have robot umps calling balls and strikes, and on and on and on. Things change, times change. I miss the days when we could have a million walk ons, prop 48 studs with off the field issues and sub 2.5 gpas, roids in the locker room and every other little angle that our school used to gain advantages within the sport, but those days are over. Don’t have to like it, but gotta go with it.

Wonder when we will start to see players opt out of regular season games once they are out of the playoffs? I just can’t imagine skipping a game that you have loved to play all your life. You can get hurt in any practice or game, so I don’t understand the point of skipping a bowl game.

Semester is over. They aren’t coming back for the spring semester - they won’t be using scholarship money in the spring and have fulfilled the fall semester requirements that their scholarship $ covers

scholarship money is awarded by semester

Exactly why the smart ones opt out. Tyler Lindebaum decided not to opt out and injures his foot in a meaningless bowl game. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

That sucks for him, hope he gets well soon!! Hope it's nothing too serious and that he has insurance for any loss of value.

Again, I know why they do it but it shows the mentality of today's players and why most people don't give a rats *** about college football anymore, including me.

Why are you only whining about the players being greedy and selfish?

I'm whining? I'm stating my opinion and so are you. I hate that college football has turned into a selfish game and players that get a free education, room and board, meals, and state of the art facilities to live and train in opt out on their teammates. If you're ok with it than get used to it only getting worse in the future. Bowl games will be even more worthless as it becomes the new normal.

Lotta outdated takes in here in my opinion. Players are finally able to look out for themselves in some capacity. And the cost of that education doesn’t come close to what they generate for the schools. Again, I don’t have to enjoy many of the changes in the game I grew up watching, but It’s up to me to accept them or do something else with my time.

Yes. And very selectively.

Most of what is wrecking college athletics was put in motion by a bunch of old *ucks who look just like you and me - not the players.

Didn’t NU have a team vote a couple years ago to not play in a bowl game?

Yes, and probably pissed off and embarrassed every ex Husker that has ever stepped foot on the field. It again comes down to some players being selfish and not playing for the team, but what do I know?

Especially when you consider the drought NU is in for bowl appearances. Can’t even remember the last one. Was it the tax slayer bowl in 2014?

It’s just a matter of time. By the new standard, once you lose your second game they’re all exhibitions after that. Why risk injury trying to get a better bowl game that you’re going to opt out of anyway?
