(Somewhere there's a thread on NIL legislation, but the search engine doesn't seem to let me search for old threads on this site.)
The Athletic reports that the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, and MLS have all urged Congress to reject proposed legislation to write the House settlement into law and to grant the NCAA an antitrust exemption. The associations assert that progress for compensating college players has happened only through antitrust litigation (which is true) and so the associations argue that there shouldn't be an exemption. Perhaps the associations fear that Congressional legislation would be a precedent for pro sports as well.
The story says that a couple of House Democrats have agreed to co-sponsor the proposed legislation. That *may* be a sign that enough Senate Democrats will support the legislation to break a potential Senate filibuster. (Ending a filibuster required 60 Senators, and the Republicans alone have 53.) But, as I say so often about NIL, we'll see what happens.
Here's a link: unfortunately, the story is behind the New York Times' pay wall.https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/64...t-nil-players-associations-opposition-letter/
