How dumb was it to not see portal plus play for pay equals professional sports free agency?

We are the equivalent of a “small market team” in professional sports,

Pike’s ability to run an offense, prevent transfers and recruit is irrelevant in the current scheme of things in college sports.

The great spirit and tradition of college sports is gone, getting chills listening to fight songs and Alma Maters means nothing anymore.

P-5 equals professional sports, we can’t compete.

Yup thats why i was always against this

Sad to see but it will make it easier to step away from college sports
Norms change, kids today will know nothing else but play for pay, the Jersey you’ve dreamed to wear from the time you were old enough to remember will no longer be a thing.

Hell I dreamed of being a Montclair Mountie as a kid, watching us walk onto the field in all Blue as a kid was like being in heaven, we idolized the players.

If you’re any good today you’re snapped up by Bergen Catholic or Don Bosco

Who’s stepping away ? Are these same dopes that said they would step away if rutgers football ever got political ? Then schiano and team make huge political
Statement and put “chop for change” on gameday attire. Those people are still here !

I don’t see chop for change being political honestly.

Anyone who think these changes are positive for a school like Rutgers is just not assessing the landscape properly.

We are not alone and there will be more have nots than haves but this sucks.

The only good news is that is probably not sustainable but that will need to be demonstrated clearly and getting there will get ugly.

We were pretty awful under the old way. How much worse could we be ?

If people think this type of stuff doesn’t matter to some fans they’re crazy. The win at all costs fans they don’t care because they have always believed in this model (whether permitted or not). But, for those who viewed college sports differently, they absolutely care. I write my contribution check every year to RU, but the day someone calls and asks me to contribute to some type of NIL deal for a 17-18 year old kid is the day I decide to never write another check again.

Nice name calling Plum!
You can consider me a “dope” buddy.
I have no interest in college sports play for pay free Agency.
I have no interest in supporting it.
As for political statements. I use action not words

No idea what you’re talking about Greene?
HS hockey players with ability from NJ move out of the their homes 16 year’s old
I guess I am thinking about public kids deciding not to go to Delbarton. You are right about the ultra talented kid going away to school.

Or juniors.
Is Delbarton not getting the players anymore From north North Jersey?
St Augustine is huge down south right?

You step away when…..
1. Rutgers can’t compete in landscape
2. Pay for play is stuffed in your face and you realize there are alternatives

I can go watch the Devils or get in to Ivy League basketball.

The dope comment wasn’t towards the NIL . It was towards the people that said they would step away for political reasons and then didn’t . I am saying no one or very little fans are going to step away. People don’t need to announce foreshadowing it , just do it then if you’re gonna do it.
Let’s be honest if we are going to rose bowls and final fours , no one is stepping away. We are all going to be running to the great pregame parties thrown by areyounuts on site. Anyone that believes other than that is lost

Delbarton is a shell of what they once were. Parents have realized their AAA team takes priority of HS hockey, even at Delbarton. The local HS team works with the player and is OK missing HS games for club.

We weren’t exactly competing well in the old landscape for years.
It’s anyone’s right to step away I haven’t seen it yet , all I see is people’s empty threats to step away for various reasons .
Some fanbase this is threatening to not be fans anymore . It’s kinda pathetic

I was/am hoping Jersey Mike's would engage in NIL deals with up and coming players as a better Rutgers team brings more eye balls and name recognition to the arena.

I think an additional 500k annual investment split amongst a handful of players could have a nice return and lift all boats.

I was turned off of pro sports years ago. Never thought I would see the day when you could go to a symphony for less than a ballgame. Only pro sports I go to are Phillies games and that’s because of the Free parking and $20 tickets. If the NIL and transfer portal gets even worse , there will be a percentage (and I don’t know how many) who will say I have had enough. They will realize high school sports are the best deal around—$5 tickets, Free parking, $2 hot dogs and they can get to a game seven minutes from home.

You guys are all still here.
It hasn’t happened yet plum. It’s coming. I do see empty seats in football btw and if what I think will happen transpires there will be plenty more or all occupied by the opponents fans. Greg is doing a yeomans job trying the right the ship but you’ve already had a glimpse. Look at our fan support at football now versus 2006. There is no comparison.

It's not rocket science. Get deals together, and get them paid. Guys are looking to get paid, it is what it is.

In about 2 months most players season will end. Similar to testing the waters for the NBA, it will be common place for players to put their names in the portal. It will be full blown free agency. Cliff would be silly to not put himself in the portal to see what his asking price is.

Once again, Rose Bowls, final fours, kids opting out of bowls. play for pay and portal free agency, not my cup of tea.
My fanaticism of RU sports was founded on a completely different platform.
I don’t need to be quiet about it, I’m sharing….😊

Here's a truth--based on how poorly our fans, alumni and state now contribute financially to RU ,forget the idea of RU ever competing in a world of 'professional" BIG 10 college sports.

Me too. I realized that I was cheering for mercenaries wearing certain laundry. It didn't hold my interest anymore. I don't miss pro sports. (I once lived and died with every Redskins play, for example.)

I think Zappaa is 100% correct, and I wonder if I will miss college sports...

I mentioned in an emotionally charged Pike thread, the trend for P-5 D-1 difference making players coming to our program will be money.
Basketball is a revenue sport, 6 and 7 digit numbers are being tossed around.

I advocated for the right to own your own name and likeness….Geo was 100 percent spot on….play for pay was not part of the equation.

Agree with you zappaa. The signposts are all there and have been building for a long time. The escalating consolidation of P-5 conferences into a kind of college sports monopoly, with the prevailing ethic being "you're nobody unless you are in one of the Big Five." The explosion of TV game coverage into very big business, first with the establishment of all-sports networks on cable TV, then with the proliferation of online streaming. The huge impact of the liberalized transfer portal rules. The fading role of the NCAA, which for all of its justly-due criticisms still represented the amateur past. The salaries of big name college coaches that far exceed those of the university president. The rapidly diminishing likelihood that top notch players will stay in school long enough to graduate. NIL (which I am totally for) is another indicator as well, but at least one that favors the players. But there are even indirect trends that point to a changing ethos in college sports, such as the soariing popularity of sports betting on local and national sports news and talk TV and radio and on dedicated websites. While I do not yet agree 100% with you that recruiting is already completely irrelevant, your basic premise is correct: that major P-5 sports are becoming corporatized and monetized and that Rutgers simply cannot compete. We are the equivalent of a small market team.

it isn't there yet, but it is obvious where this heading. The big test will be in 2 months when the season ends. My guess it will relly be in 14 moths when schools/fanbases really figure out how to win the game. It might be a wee bit early in late March 2022.

But if it’s inevitably getting there , why stay aboard the titanic ? Are we hoping against hope it’s not gonna hit the iceberg ?

I held on the Rutgers football tickets for 2 to 3 years too many. I'll probably do the same here. The hope or pipedream is the NCAA steps in and figures out some sort of solution. Don't know if that is feasible.

The concept of NIL I can live with. I can't deal with the application. NIL shouldnt be away to play the players, but this was obvious the minute the change happened
