Just left Petty’s BBQ and they said this is their last day to be open. Kinda sad but I guess they could only keep a major intersection lot for so long. It was a great run.

They did say they may open another spot.

It was great years ago. But last few years it wasn’t that great when we would try to stop there. Sad part is the outdoors eating and pickup business model they already had was great for surviving covid but I guess they still couldn’t make it

Me too. I forget exactly where it was but I THINK that it may have been in that building just before you get to the East Oktibbeha Fire Department if you look at Google Maps street view. I know it was on the south side of 182 and wasn't too far out at all.

I always enjoyed Petty’s but the restaurant landscape is so much different in Starkville compared to when I was there from 2004-2008. Lot more choices now and quality choices too.

They mentioned he is having heart surgery this Friday and said opening back up in another location would depend on his recovery.

He alluded to that a few weeks back when I was passing through and stopped for a BBQ sammich. I hate to see them close down but I hope he makes a speedy recovery and opens a new place when he gets back on his feet. They're my favorite BBQ in StarkVegas. Stopping in for a large BBQ sammich, fries and a small bucket of sweet tea was a game day ritual for me and crew.

Man, I’m still toting around some cholesterol from that place from 05-07. Asked one of the workers there (may have been a son?) about what smoker they used one time. He took me around back and showed it to me. Judging by the amount of meat on that thing, they did really really good business.

Sonny's was on 16th Section Rd off of 182. The original Petty's was on 182 just a short piece from the overpass.

Pettys was originally down Hwy 25 just past Emerson school. Sonnys was out at section line road behind the old drive in.

That wasn't Petty's, that was Sonny's out on 16th section road.

I like their hot sauce, but the food took a turn about 6-8 years ago. Not to mention the service was bad. You'd wait 40 minutes to get a 2 sandwich special. On top of that, I realized the price you got charged seemed to be arbitrary. It used to be my favorite place to eat in Starkville. Hell, I used to go to Petty 2 next to the police station and had a decent report with all of them. I'd occasionally get offered a free Bud heavy out of the fridge in back. That's how you know you were a welcomed patron. I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden food and service went to hell.

From 2000-2006 I used to destory their cheeseburgers in the sweltering heat at those picnic tables. Customer service was awful, but that was the charm. The food was really good.

That whole area (intersection to animal clinic) is supposed to be turned into a retail development site with Chipotle being the anchor business. Supposedly will house 1-2 additional businesses.

We used to stop and get food after ball practice on Wednesdays heading to church. He knew the order when we walked up. Mr. Petty has been in overall poor health for a while. His son has essentially run the business for several years (unfortunately not as good as the old man). As others have eluded, it wouldn't surprise me to see them move locations. But, I can also see old man cashing in the chips and calling it a day on the restaurant.

Had a relative in town who as they aged became les and less mobile and struggled to get in/out of her car. They recognized her car when she pulled up and would always go to the car to take her order and deliver food. Always asked how she was doing. I will always respect and admire them for offering that level of customer service. Wish them success in the future.

I left Starkville in 2006 and never had that experience. As others have said, maybe it went downhill in the last several years. We used to go every Sunday after a hungover round of golf. I’d walk up, Mr Petty would say what can I get for you boss man? I’d get a double bacon cheeseburger plate all fries with a large coke. Sit at the table smoke a cigarette and sometimes Mr Petty would come out there and shoot the **** if they were slow.

My best Petty story was one Thanksgiving, nothing was open except for Barnhills and I wasn’t in any shape to sit down and eat. I drove down 12 and Petty’s was actually opened so I swung in. I ordered my normal and when I asked for a large coke Mr Petty asked if I wanted some Crown in it. Don’t know if he was joking or what. But I said no thanks. He ended up giving me a free bag of Doritos for some random reason. I think he had a dice game that went long the night before and was still in good shape or something.

In the late 80s or early 90s a buddy told me Petty's secret ingredient in this sauce was chicken sh_t. Although i was doubted that was true, I could never get past it.

Maybe it's just me but pulled pork is all the same....

I guess you can over cook it and dry it out or burn it but BBQ is all about the sauce. TBH, good bread, cole slaw, sauce, fries etc...along with BBQ makes a difference. I think the atmosphere of a place also makes food better or worse. And , yes, I have lived in MS my entire life and have eaten BBQ from Southern Tx to West Arkansas and all of West TN and MS......

While a student and many times after, I have frequented Petty's. It was one of my favorites. One night me and my then girlfriend (now wife) pulled up and made our order as usual, sat in the car and waited for them to let us know it was ready.... at this time (late 90's) some of Mr. Petty's kids were and family were working the window. They waved and let us know it was ready, so I walked up and took the brown bag that was handed to me and headed back to the car. I handed the bag to now wife and she opened it to make sure we got everything. She looked at me and handed the back back to me and said "they are going to need this back". I looked at her like she had lost her mind and took a look into the bag - it was full of cash, they had mistakenly given me the bag with the days cash in it. Like a good Delta Boy I quickly took the bag of money back and swapped it out for the one with our food in it. The Petty's were eternally grateful and remembered my face from that point on. Petty's will be missed.

Most pulled pork is the same. Oversauced enough to make the meat almost irrelevant. And that can be fine if the sauce is good. But good pulled pork you can eat without sauce if youw ant to and it still taste good, or my preference, have the sauce drizzled over the pork rather than the pork essentially floating in it.
