You just have to wonder if he was the first choice or if he was just the first guy on the short list to be available to talk. If the deal was close to being done, I can't see Cohen opting to be in meetings in Florida.

He was the first guy, things came out over the last weeks, and we backed off. Noble thing to let him withdraw his name and we move on to McDinnell and name him this week. Just a guess**

So he pulls his name out of the search at the same time that McDonnell's season comes to an end... is that just coincidence?

Maybe TCU fans convinced Cohen that Saarloos really is the secret to TCU's success and he's going after him now.**

Guys, Cohen even hinted in a recent interview (Thursday or Friday) that there was a chance his top target was still coaching and that his season may not have ended yet. I have no dog in this hunt and I bet we never know who is/was choice number 1, but I can fully believe in is that after the Cann debacle Cohen has completely vetted this next coach.

That being said I really think there have been multiple names “leaked” to multiple different people in the know to keep everything as secretive as possible.

Kinda paranoid, but it's a way for Cohen to find out if he has anyone inside his department or inner circle leaking info that he doesn't want out. He tells them, "Now you can't say a WORD but..." and never tells them anything credible to find out if they leak it. I know, sounds kinda "mafia" but he is known as the IB for a reason.

Correct. If Schloss was it, there was no reason not to name him this week!! Everything happens for a reason and naming McDonnell this week will happen!

I kind of felt like Schloss was a smokescreen a couple of weeks back- hopefully that’s what this was all along. Reality is, if our new coach isn’t Dan McDonnell, Tim Corbin, or someone of that caliber, the search will have been a disappointment.

Not necessarily because there aren’t other good coaches out there, but because Cohen established that expectation from the start and never gave an inch on those expectations throughout the process. John is the one who laid out his criteria, now he has to back it up.

My thoughts

When he was not announced this week after his season had ended, I did not think it was JS. With his season done had it been him, then I feel an announcement would have been made. It would make no sense to delay it if a deal has been made. That was my gut feeling.

Of course I don't have any sources!

He's an ECU alum with strong Ole Miss ties. State would be a mighty leap for him.

Correct.

But he's basically topped out financially at ECU at sub 400k with bonuses and Bianco isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Also Lafferty will do his best Raffo imitation when Bianco does leave.

It’s becoming clear to me. “Multiple trips to Omaha” can only mean one thing. Come on home, Coach Polk! Mama’s calling.

I’m guessing whoever it is, he won’t be named until our season is over, Out of respect to Henderson and staff. And so the players can stay focused and continue to bust their balls for the current staff. This group has been fun to watch since April, and you gotta credit Henderson, Geatreau and Brown for that. All this being said with hopes we make a super of course.

I’ll take the bet on getting fired.

My point is comparing schloss to him.
Schloss develops great and recruits pretty well at tcu. You’d think the developing stays the same and recruiting probably improves a lot due to program change.

Same with Mullen. He doesn’t need to recruit top 5 classes to win. If he can be consistently between say 8 and 15 and fill needs, he’ll develop the players and win.

Problem with that is Mullen will have to go through 3 of the best recruiting programs in the country (Georgia, FSU, and bama) to get where Florida fans expect him to be. Mullen is not good when he has less talent than the opponent

And yes my feeling are hurt. Biggest disappointment I've felt from an MSU coaching search standpoint. I doubt I see a State CWS NC in my life time. 17!!!

And while I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt getting so emotionally invested in a 'possible' coach .. THIS baseball team has a really good shot at Omaha THIS year and a very bright future REGARDLESS of 'WHO' the coach is!

Just look at what they have done WITH Hendu!

Or Gary Henderson. 1996, 1998, 2006, 2007[/QUOTE]

This is my fear. Especially if we win today. Henderson has done a pretty good job, but it's a Matt Luke type hire.

Good point, I think if it was definitely Schloss with his season ending, we would have announced and gotten him on the recruiting trail even with our team still playing. I personally see no real connection between the coach being named and the fact our team is down in Tallahassee playing. Having a new coach in waiting certainly didn't hurt us in the Taxslayer Bowl and there is no reason I can see to delay getting our new baseball coach on the job if he is ready to be named. Given what happened with Canny I could certainly see us pulling the plug on ANY coach this go round if there are any questions about his moral character. Not directing that specifically at Schloss but this time Cohen is not going to be burned in that area.

No matter how far we go this postseason, Henderson is damn lucky we didn't go out in 2. If he had managed his pitching staff properly in game 1, we're probably already through to the super at 3-0.
