Saw the news he passed away. Always liked the way he coached. I believe he was the only coach with a winning record against Devaney during his stint at Nebraska.

True Story: After the 1969 game which I attended with my father between Kansas in Lincoln which started Nebraska 32 game winning streak, on the final drive late in the 4th quarter Kansas received a pass interference call and back in those days it just wasn’t a 15 yard penalty and automatic 1st down it was from the spot of the foul KU also contributed 2 personal foul penalties and with 1:22 left in the game Jeff Kinney scores the winning TD..

Devaney after the game always had a way with words and told Pepper Rodgers “ well how did you like my brother in-law officiating today”Laughing

Before that interference I surely thought we were going to get beat by Kansas for 3 straight time...

Larry Frost also participated in the game 5 carries for 13 yards and 5 receptions for 88 yards..

RIP Pepper..

I also attended that game. I believe KU was called for two unsportsmanlike conduct calls for arguing the pass interference from Tagge to tightend Jim McFarland. After the game, in the KU locker room, Pepper supposedly took his sandwich and threw it against the wall.

yea I remember hearing that too..

Mike McFarland was the one that was interfered with with the 2 penalties put the ball down inside 17..

Paul Rogers kicked a 55 yard FG which was a Big 8 record that day too. Forgot about that..

My favorite Pepper Rogers story was from a Kansas-Missouri game when Mizzou had a high-power offense featuring Mel Gray. Missouri coach Dan Devine ran up the score pretty big that day, and after the game a reporter asked Rogers about it. He said something like, "As the points were piling up, I flashed Dan a peace sign. He sent half of it back to me."
