Penny will play an up tempo AAU/NBA type offense and these future NBA level talent players will love playing for him.
Pretty much none of these AAU stars coming in to any program want to nor want to know how to play defense.
Not being able to guard the pick and roll has never prevented any NBA team from drafting a potential future star. (News flash!).
Yes, inability to play defense may prevent you from winning a national championship, but it won't prevent you from recruiting top players who don't give a crap about playing defense.
And who knows? If you get enough of these top players that can actually shoot the basketball, you might even slip in there and win a national championship.
