Does anyone know if they have a good relationship? Would LOVE Penny to be on staff next year. Anyone know if they had any kind of relationship while Cal was at Memphis? Really hoping Memphis doesn't offer Penny head coaching job.

The biggest concern is that Hardaway will get a head coaching job next year (Memphis or elsewhere) and take Wiseman with him.

I don't think so. Wiseman actually gets to make his own decision. Hardaway can't just "take Wiseman with him". Instead of speculating on behind the scenes stuff that nobody knows, it's strange that nobody has considered what we already know for sure. Tubby Smith, not Hardaway, is the Memphis basketball coach. Nobody knows if Tubby will be fired. If Tubby gets fired, nobody knows who Memphis would hire, but Hardaway has undoubtedly considered this possibility. Nobody knows whether Hardaway would actually want the job. If Hardaway wants to influence Wiseman's college decision, he would already be in Wiseman's ear before now. Wiseman and his mother have openly said that UK is their favorite, and they sound serious about it. If they are going to take Penny Hardaway's opinion into account, they would already have done that. Anything can happen in recruiting, but recruiting has not been a problem for Calipari. I don't see a whole lot to worry about here.

Tubby is not going anywhere on his own. Memphis would owe him 9 mil if they let him go.
More than that!

https://247sports.com/college/memph...icially-signs-contract-with-Memphis-105910786

Aug 9, 2017

"Smith originally signed a memorandum of understanding that agreed to his five-years and $15.45 million terms. The contract will run through April 30, 2021. If he were to be terminated without cause the University of Memphis would owe him the remaining money left on his contract.

This next season he will be paid $2.9 million, which should keep him in the top 20 of highest paid NCAA coaches. He was there last year when he made 2.8 million. That salary increases $3.25 million the next three seasons. There are no automatic rollovers in his contract and there is a $500,000 buyout clause if another school were to hire Smith away."

But a very VERY WELL CONNECTED “source” here on the bord claims he’s “heard chatter “ (lolz) of Penny being the next Ole Miss coach !
It's also worth mentioning that the track record, limited as it may be, for P5 schools hiring head basketball coaches straight from AAU has not been generally impressive. There are reasons why the track record for doing this is limited. And with all due respect to Mr. Hardaway, both Ole Miss and Memphis have access to long lists of experience college head coaches as potential replacements.

Penny 100% wants the Memphis Job and has stated to people around the program he wouldn't take an assistant position, only the head coach.

Penny to UM would take Wiseman off the table more than likely.

I believe UK has reached out to Penny already. It's probably going to come down to what Memphis does. And I don' think they want to throw him the keys.

Penny probably sees Chris Mullin getting the St. John’s job and thinks why not him at Memphis.

What is it about Penny that you love and in your opinion would make him a good assistant at UK?

I hope everything you said here turns out to be correct. Nobody knows what is going to happen but most are just talking heads with "what if" scenarios. It's all innocent message board talk. The fact is though, IF Memphis let's Tubby go or Tubby leaves, and IF Memphis were to hire Hardaway (which I would consider the leader if they do make a change, THEN I could definitely see Wiseman staying home in TN and playing for Hardaway. Those are alot of IFs, I know but IF those IFs do happen, we could lose Wiseman and that would SUCK. No IF, ANDs, or BUTs about that.

1. Wiseman
2. Name recognition
3. Seems to be a great up and upcoming coach in the HS/AAU circuit. He wins.
4. I believe he'd do very well on the recruiting trail at UK. Can't do worse than what we've had recently.

I've read about the same. If Penny gets a head coaching job Wiseman probably follows. Also heard another guy would likely follow that we want, Jeffries. Remember what happened with Mo. Went to TX because of his connection with Smart coaching him. Just saying. Here's one of the articles I read, but have seen a couple expressing we could loose guys now and in the future if Penny gets a head coaching job. Mostly think Memphis, but anywhere close by could hurt. Especially if he could get in the SEC, if Ole Miss would hire him. Not sure they would.

If Hardaway takes a college job, Head or Assistant, Wiseman will follow.

Exactly, only I'd rank those: 4 (bc of AAU connections), 3, 1, 2. I wouldn't add your last sentence to #4 though (can't do worse than we've had recently). Our recruiting has still been awesome, just second best now behind Duke. I think this would put us back on top, or at least help!

I assume it would be for his AAU connections, as far as recruiting would go.
Good point. If he "brought" Wiseman to UK, it would be for one year. Now what is he worth to us after that? Can he coach real basketball or just playground AAU basketball. Can he recruit anyone outside of Memphis? What is his worth to us?

We have a few dead weight assistants now, he is just another one or is he good.

This upcoming class we're ranked 6th. And I was saying some of our current assistant coaches are bad at recruiting. Looking at you barbee
Agree on Barbee. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him move on after this year
