Penalty question?

There were at least two offsides calls on LSU yesterday that I can remember. Both plays were blown dead immediately. Was there somebody coming straight at KJ or shouldn't those have been free plays for us? Still can't believe we beat LSU on the road and ran for 9 yards as a team. Can't wait to see this team put a complete game together now.

Also, on the question of penalties, is it actually legal to grab under the helmet to tackle somebody? Shocking to me that horse collar would be a penalty and that not be one.

What about the mystery of the loss 3 yards in the first quarter. Started the play at our 17, KJ throws an incomplete pass (batted down by a DL) and the ball is set at our 14. Hill gets two yards on the next play which should have got us a 1st down but instead a 4th and 3. Did the refs rule it as an interception and fumble recovery?

I remember the calls but didn’t pay close attention. Did the defender touch an offensive player? I think they’ll blow it dead if they touch a lineman, if they have a direct line to QB, or if an offensive player moves before the snap.

Not positive but

I think our linemen both flinched, after the LSU player moved into the neutral zone.

They would have had to remain still for the play to continue.

I've gotta think that we were misled by a bad graphic. I noticed this too. Felt like it should have been 3rd and 2, but graphic showed 3rd and 5. No one on our sideline complained.

I remember the mystery three yds so i went to the play by play. 2nd down was not incomplete. Apparently Dolla Bill caught the ball- i guess after it was tipped- for a loss of 3. But no one including the tv folks knew it

Yes, the Ref called it dead so as to protect KJ

Of course, Johnson should have just batted the ball down instead of catching it. I'm sure the coaches will "advise" him on that error.

Kwatrivous Johnson, an OL, caught the deflection

Three things will cause the officials to blow the play dead on an offsides: contact with an offensive player, movement by an offensive player induced by the offsides, and a defensive player having unabated access to the quarterback. In one case yesterday the defender made contact and in another the tackle jumped. Both automatic whistles.

If you grasp and pull any part of the helmet, its a facemask penalty. Grabbing the back of the helmet at the neck is the same as grabbing the facemask. But, like a facemask, touching that part of the helmet is not automatically a penalty. You have to grab it and forceably move it. My guess is the replay didnt conclusively show the defender pulling on KJ's helmet, but they never really explained it.
