What I did here, for comparion's sake, I took Croom's last year through Mullen's first year, then Mullen's last year through JoMo's first year, then McElwain's last year through Mullen's first year at Flarrda. See for yourself.

MSU
2008: 68 for 544, opponents 76 for 643
2009: 67 for 539, opponents 67 for 513

2017: 80 for 710, opponents 65 for 626
2018: 83 for 748, opponents 62 for 475

Florida
2017: 88 for 646, opponents 64 for 501
2018: 95 for 789, opponents 87 for 681

Seems like there is zero correlation between penalties and a coach. We can throw away that criticism of JoMo.

too bad they don't have it broken down to stupid *** penalties that cost TDs or 3 and outs. Throat slashs and Running backs with face mask penalties.

Many say PF penalties are directly correlated with aggressiveness. And before someone throws out "well look at Alabama or Iowa"....well, Ferentz and Saban are very similar coaches who teach the fundamentals well and actually steer AWAY from momentum and emotion which breeds over-aggressiveness. So it makes sense that they are penalized less overall.

It's up for debate about whether being over-aggressive is a good thing. I think it's more due to the players honestly, and as the stats show, we were a very penalized team in both 2017 and 2018.

There's a huge difference between personal fouls and unsportsman conduct. Personal fouls often are a product of an agressive defense and sometimes have to just be tolerated. But there's no excuse for getting an unsportamanlike conduct penalty.

No way to know if ours are better or worse than anyone else's, I'd say they probably aren't much different, at worst they are probably in line with overall penalties. You just remember them more, especially after a game like yesterday.

There's no way player discipline is not the responsibility of the coaches.
Agree I'm just saying our penalty situation was pretty similar to 2017, with a different coach. Seems it was that same way from Croom to Mullen, and from McElwain to Mullen.

The timing( what part of the game), Off/Def penalites and where the penalties take place could have more weight than the overall tally. Really can’t believe we have a spreadsheet on the number of penalties dating back. Fulltime job

The penalties we got this year were about lack of discipline. We are a very undisciplined team, and that tone comes from the HC.
