Life is full of options and this tournament is certainly one. To suggest that it is THE championship of collegiate wrestling is a big desire of a small number of teams. The majority of Division One teams aren't even invited so I'll bet those schools don't see this as anymore than what it is...a big money donor (or two) trying to buy a backyard trophy.

A couple of thoughts...

1( Why do teams need to accept mid April? Its before U S Open. Last year with Penn State in 15 of the 30 spots of the age group worlds, the Paycom event was too soon for PSU to shift from freestyle to folk style with adequate rest and preparation.

2) Last year PSU went to the Collegiate Duals in Nashville Dec 20-21. So did Ohio State, Iowa State, Cornell, Stanford, Little Rock, Lehigh and Illinois. Will there be a Collegiate duals this year? I can't imagine the same teams competing in back to back weeks. Also last year Ohio State and Nebraska skipped CKLV. Again a potential 10 matches by mid December if they go to both CKLV and Paycom.

3) If we don't go, how will Cael ever win Coach of the Year? (tic)

Willie, on Basch and the Brain this morning, said there are quite a few teams not going to this event this year, they listed Nebraska as a no, Iowa as a likely no, Michigan as a no, none of the Ivy's. They also said VaTech is up in the air as that is during their finals but were trying to work around it.
Haha! Going from the Paycom National Duals to the “Pay[ne] County Duals”

This is especially delicious as, according to past information from FRL, it was moved back to December at least partly so it didn't butt up against Worlds so much (and thus PSU had no excuses to not attend).

... and then nobody in Stilly bothered to check the academic calendars of any other schools. Not our finals week, must be good to go for everyone else.

Wonder if both Tom’s rethink and follow Caels lead. They had nothing left come tourney time, but, Penn St sure seemed too.

Strictly from a marketing and PR perspective the tournament could spin last year that this is “The National dual tournament” and Penn state is just afraid, taking their ball and going home, but you can’t spin multiple top teams being out the second year

Or they could spin it like last year. A national invite tournament with multiple top teams competing.
The national dual champion is a peripheral narrative that is propagated a lot on this board.
The spiel about Penn State should be here was they were the only top team missing.

I don't know about All-Americans, but they all qualified for the B10 tournament. So there's that to hang their hat on.
I like poking fun at Rutgers as much as anyone not named Matter. However, to qualify for the Big10 tournament you must be a starter for a Big10 program. Even a bad Big10 starter is pretty damn good at this wrestling thing we all love.

At Rutgers, good = elite. I agree they're really good wrestlers, but the ' Booms ' give me a chuckle. The Harer brothers are just over the mountain from where I live. I'll cheer for them unless it's against PSU wrestlers.

This was something I have been meaning to post, I just used your post as a path to the post.

My dad got a masters from Rutgers, but I have no feeling of allegiance to the school. I do however wish they would make a commitment to developing a top tier program. Goodale is never, ever going to deliver them into anything resembling a top tier program. Go get a coach, put the financial backing into the entire program, keep your talent at home and have a run at it.
