I was shocked that he was caught from behind on that 59-yard run. You won't see many D-1 backs get run down like that, and not scoring there was costly because, as is Iowa's custom, the Hawkeyes had to settle for a field goal. But if you finish off that run, it's another four points. I love Patterson's talent, but that run has to make it to the end zone.
On the other hand, RBs seldom are praised for their blocking, but Patterson was tremendous yesterday. He repeatedly cleaned up rushers and kept Cade clean. And on at least one occasion, Patterson took down TWO Cyclone defenders on one block to give Cade time to get his pass away. That aspect of this young man's game cannot be overlooked. He was fantastic.
BTW: BF, for the most part, called a good game, and I've been among his harshest critics. I'm still not on board with his daddy handing him the OC and QB jobs, but Iowa should have had a 91-yard TD on that double move, but Cade, surprisingly, didn't put enough air under the ball. And Iowa also would have had another TD, but the two TEs collided in the end zone. Somebody, obviously, ran the wrong pattern. And the O-line was much improved, especially since ISU does have a solid defense. So there were some good things that happened in Ames, no doubt about that.
