Fourteen years after taking down Joe Paterno’s statue outside Beaver Stadium, Penn State is poised later this week to open a Paterno exhibit inside the stadium’s all-sports museum. According to a surprise news release Tuesday from Penn State Athletics, PSU’s All-Sports Museum — inside the football stadium — will publicly unveil its new “Paterno Family Football Experience Room” on Thursday morning. The permanent experience will be housed in a newly renovated room that will include “historic artifacts, interactive displays and multimedia storytelling” on the history of Nittany Lions (Nittany Lions Fan Gear) football.

It’s named Paterno, but how much Joe is actually in there? A history room should be broad in its representation, but Joe should have a significant presence there.

3 things driving this:
1) They need $$$$ for the stadium. Many will never give them a dime after what they did to Joe with NO DUE PROCESS.
2) Sandusky may be proven innocent.
3) Enough time has gone by that they feel confident that the truth will never come out on what really went down.

The current scum on the BoT are no different than those that ordered the removal of the statue and player plaques.
It’s a huge step that I never imagined would happen. I wonder if Campbell had anything to do with it? I think Franklin would have been opposed to it.
They hedged on the PR aspect by naming it the "Paterno Family...".
And that may well have been what Joe would have wanted, and what Sue wants, so all good. But I believe the BOT is still running a bit afraid of facing maybe 24 to 48 hours of public criticism over anything honoring Joe Paterno. A significant lack of courage in this regard, just as they've demonstrated since the fit hit the shan.
Kudos to Campbell for not being afraid to do the right thing wrt Paterno and embracing his true legacy. He's a smart man - I'm sure he asked questions around this before he spoke about Joe and accepted the family's sincere welcome.
They are probably even worse. I no longer pay attention, as I could care less, but these people are all self-serving.

The football alumni certainly agree with your point. They finally feel welcomed back now. Big game james wanted it all about him and keep everything from the past buried good or bad.That’s preposterous. He was not even born yet.

Amen. That statue should be put up ASAP. It hurt me when I watched the FSU game this past Saturday and the broadcast showed Bobby Bowden’s statue and the sign that says Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium, because Joe deserves that and so much more. It’s a disgrace how the winningest coach in college football history largely has been forgotten not only by the general public, but also by the university that he put on the map. PSU should do everything to tout its importance in this sport rather than running away from the person who chiefly made it important.

It won't fit in a room with 8' - 9' ceiling heights so the BOT is still trying to figure out how to melt it down to make statues of themselves.....all 38 of them.

I'm with you on most of this.
But, even though I'm as much of a JoePa supporter (JoeBot) as anyone, I don't really care about the statue being put up again. Mainly because Joe himself famously didn't care about it all that much.
Joe once told a friend of mine, former player who was very involved in campus development, that he wished the statue would be melted down and made into coasters. He left it at that, according to my friend.
However, that's an intriguing idea. Melt it down, certify the melted material, and make coasters out of it to sell. Use the proceeds to fund the Paterno Fellows Program, or to enhance some exhibit or collection or area of the Paterno Library, or to do something equally worthwhile academically or on campus as determined by Sue and family.
That won't happen either, I'm sure. If the statue is still intact, it will no doubt sit idly by for a very long time, and any value from it being squandered for no good reason at all, just a lack of courage by the BOT to do the right thing.
That’s the whole dumb thing about this whole absurd affair: why in the hell was the statue ever taken down in the first place? It was just an example of cowardice.
That donor needed to get naming rights for the field. :-/
I am so blessed to have actually met Joepa more than once, and spoke to him. It was short and memorable. The last time was at the Orange bowl in Miami(1999), I think, when Chafee scored that 79 yd td. What a memory.

I actually had a really nice, long conversation with Jay at an Alumni Association event a couple years ago. I sincerely believe the family has no idea where the statue is.
Let's be honest. The statue never properly depicted JoePa because he never would have raised his arm with his index finger pointed towards the sky.
Who knows where the statue resides today, if it even exists? A more memorable tribute to Joe and Sue would be for a life-sized statue of them both standing next to each other in front of the Library.

I always thought that statue should have been the picture of him that was on the cover of the book “Paterno: By the Book.” That photo had him kneeling on one knee and holding a football while in practice clothes.
See? Only took 15 years for us to acknowledge his family name again. In another twenty-five, we'll be able to mention his first name in broad daylight.

My memory is of the azz Bernie McCue standing in front of the statue with perverse signs being protected by the kampus klown cops at the behest of the BoT.
Awesome. That's step one in restoring his name and legacy where PS is concerned. At my age I know I'll die waiting on the statue going back up and the public apology will never come. Some will think this post is crazy and that's ok.
Why would Franklin oppose it? My God the idiotic obsession continues.
