I guess they figure they've been winning too much lately. Seriously, how much lower can they go?

Can't blame either party. Pastner knows he's close to being fired, Georgia Tech just want a name people know and all he needs to do to be loved there is make the tourney. IF he can make the tourney.

I wonder if he's taking a pay cut? I'm pretty sure Georgia Tech is still having to shell out 2 million a year to Paul Hewitt.

I'm sure he'll recruit well and then he'll roll the ball out as usual and say "go play guys."!

I don't know about all that. I mean, he can recruit, but he doesn't know how to handle the kids because he acts like their "friend." He was successful strictly because he recruited good players and went against very weak teams in conference. Whenever he played a top 25 team, he lost. And when he made the tournament because of playing in a weak conference, he lost. Nice guy, but hard to see how he could be called a good coach at this point.

None of his players respect him. It's really sad. He'll be able to pull a player here and there, but ultimately won't be successful.

This will be one of the worst coaching decisions in decades and Memphis fans will pile in the streets screaming in harmony if this happens. He's a terrible coach, can't recruit anymore, players hate him, and the ACC would CRUSH him. There's no way this happens. He's 1 year from being fired at memphis, and the only reason he received the insane contract offer in the first place was his agent and Bowen, the memphis AD, have the same agent. Huge conflict of interest that is actually under investigation.

omg John Martin is saying he would be shocked if this didnt happen. I've got a friend that knows the inside ish to most things memphis telling me all contact from memphis to pastner was flatlined as of this afternoon. Been gone all day just checking everything.

Holy crap. Who is Georgia Techs AD and what the hell is he smoking? Do they no longer care about basketball? Leave Pastner at Memphis I love the destruction. :(:uzi:

He may do well at GT, but he is not the best coach at MSU not named Calipari. MSU had a guy named Dana Kirk in the late 70's early 80's and they were really good. They got to the final four in 85. Now, with that being said, he was dirty and was indicted on tax income evasion. A lot of it had to do with money being funneled to players.

This is so totally wrong it's not worth debating, and it's no offense at all. A memphis fan would think you've lost your mind if they read that.

Most people don't understand how awful Pastner is because they don't understand how well memphis pushes city recruits his way. He was able to feast off of a terrible league and city recruits. When everyone figured out how awful he was, it stopped immediately. Memphis is NIT or worse since then. Players hate him, and he has about the most transfers of any coach out there. His best player has transferred as a senior. Memphis will be in the CBI next season.

Trust me, it's not about following Cal. It's about being in over your head. Pastner is one of the worst, if not the worst, coaches in Memphis history. You can't go by Straight wins and losses because Memphis has changed conferences no much through the years you can't gauge it. The old Metro league would have destroyed Pastner. He's a god awful, terrible, floor coach. The ACC will eat him so fast it will make everyone do a double take. He won't last in that conference past 2 or 3 years.

They might actually go pro and the the others transfer. He was forced to hire their dad, he didnt want to do it.

The buyout is what's keeping him at Memphis. They would have already fired him.

Yeah Pastner just screams a rebirth of the end of the Paul Hewitt era for Georgia Tech. Unfortunately for them, they won't get the one great year from Pastner that they got form Hewitt. He'll recruit better than Brian Gregory did, but Pastner wasn't getting it done in the AAC. Can't see him suddenly cutting it in the ACC.

Pastner is terrible. Memphis fans are rejoicing right now.

He won't last 3 years at GT. Who the hell is their AD? He should be fired immediately.

Recruiting was never his issue. He has more than proven he can get talent but what he did with that talent was really bad. If he couldn't win big in conference USA with what he had how in the heck is he even going to win a game in the ACC?
This won't end well at all.

Georgia Tech will owe Gregory more than $1.3 million for the final two years of his contract. Hewitt, who took a $7.2 million buyout after he was fired in 2011, is still owed $2.7 million from the school over the next three years.

Now they have to buyout pastner and pay him? Wow GT could have thrown the bank at a good coach if not paying three

They will be the rambling wreck now.

If he couldn't win in Memphis' conference, how is he going to win in the ACC? What was GaTech AD thinking?

yeah...not surprising...

i recall saying that Pastner could get a gig like G-Tech back earlier in the year when folks were ripping on him...i don't know if i said it would be G-tech specifically but a similar type of program...but i knew that should he bounce or get pushed out that he'd have a job lined up...

i got laughed at...

Pastner 'supposedly' can recruit. That's the first step.

Now, Pastner has to prove he can keep kids in state instead of leaving.

On the coaching side, he should hire an assistant who has had success to help him learn how to handle the game aspects.

But for anyone to think ANY Cal assistant would go to Memphis, have you forgotten what that school did to Cal this past year?
