PJ's in a rough patch and it's only the beginning of the season. I won't look at the Vermont game as a barometer just as much as I won't look at his Kansas game. Both different ends of the same spectrum.
The problem is, like many years, our fans hype these guys up to epic proportions and it's just unfair. So far, only Hami and Knox have been really good, and even they're not looking like what the hype made them seem, and that's not a knock on their game, more a knock on fans expectations and the legend that grows with every "projected starters/stats" thread.
Washington, coming in, was billed to be a freshman Patrick Patterson-esque type of freshman. A strong, agile, athletic 4 man who would fight for rebounds and garbage baskets who also was able to make his own moves if needed. Not saying he's a clone of Patterson, but as far as mentality (strong, and a leader) and production, he was billed as a guy who'd come in and be our best rebounder and one of our top 2 or 3 scorers. In reality, as a freshman who's undersized at his position, regardless of how long his arms are, we should know better by now than to make these guys guaranteed OAD prospects before they ever see D-1 competition.
For the season, he's averaging 8 and 5. Good for a freshman on any other team, but not what we need when we're so full of youth on a team without a definitive 4 man. Would it be great to get 20 and 10 out of him? Absolutely. Realistically, if he can get closer to 11-12 points and 7-8 rebounds and keep up blocking the shots the way he does, I'll be ecstatic. Anything beyond that is gravy. And those numbers are attainable once he figures out how his style of play can score at this level consistently and once he learns to engage for 40 minutes and not go blank when there's a loose ball in his area. He needs to gobble those rebounds up and I think that's an adjustment to the speed of the game issue which comes with time.
To recap, he's not been as good as billed to date (not his fault, and not an insult). No need to worry, it's a long season. Plenty of players who ended the season amazing didn't start off so hot themselves. Regardless, he needs to do better and he unfortunately doesn't have a lot of time to figure it out before we'll need him. We got more out of conference opponents we'll need him for and the SEC is looking better than most years.
