P5 national titles

During our CWS run we were reminded that we were 1 of 3 P5 schools without a team national championship. The two remaining schools are Kansas State and Virginia Tech.

I don't really care if you won a national championship in a non-major sport 50 years ago.

So here is my list: P5 schools without a national championship in football*, men's basketball, or baseball in the last 35 years.

20 years is a better timeframe in my opinion, beyond that, you're on thin ice. Beyond 25 years, you're out, you're no longer a 'national title capable' program after that. So in football for example, that takes out Notre Dame, Washington, Georgia Tech, who we all would agree aren't really national title caliber programs at present. Michigan, Nebraska and Tennessee are dangerously close to falling out.

Now, none of this means you can't get back. Clemson did it. This is why support prior to that matters - because that's what helped build the fanbase, tradition, etc., all of which goes into the equation that tells you if you have that potential. But as for the actual title of an elite national title program......if you haven't done it in 20-25 years, you just aren't in the club.

The quarter century mark also does a better job of weeding out the titles won under different systems, to an extent. At least the closer you get, the more similar they are. And when some of these truly elite programs like Bama and Clemson are dynasties, you MIGHT extend the club to a few programs who have made the playoffs and truly competed, but didn't win titles, such as a Georgia or Oregon. NOT Notre Dame, Michigan State, Washington.

No real surprising name on that list other than A&M (it really is amazing how little they do with so much).

Wisconsin is not surprising, but they are a school that has been really good at football and basketball a lot to never bring home a championship.

Ok St. also stands out just because they had a lot of appearances in the CWS. They really should have been included in all the talk about FSU, Clemson, North Carolina, and us as far as CWS appearances without a title. After their one title in 1959, they went to seventeen more CWSs without a title. What really sucks for them is it appears their moment in baseball is gone. Been once since 1999 after being a pretty regular participant up until them.

This is a good point. 1 title in 20 appearances is remarkable, but they never get the airplay of other teams with 0 titles in fewer appearances. Not only do they only have 1 title, but it was over 60 years ago. They might as well have zero as far as I'm concerned.

Notre Dame has been in the...

National Championship game once and the playoffs twice in the past decade. Yes, I know they lost and haven't won the title since 1988. Nebraska can't beat Iowa and Northwestern. Tennessee is 4th best in their division.

They were beat down and totally uncompetitive. They aren't in the club.

Oregon, on the other hand, nearly won a title in 2010 and then at least won a playoff game. Same with Georgia, made it to the championship of the playoff and nearly won (should have won).

The big 3 for a lot of the northern schools is hockey not baseball, so I would imagine a few of the schools listed have won NC in hockey.

Still doesn't make it a major sport. Can't be a major sport when the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Pac 12 don't even play it. You certainly can make a case that nationally baseball and Women's basketball are close to on par with each other and then Softball comes after that.

I just want to remind everyone that we won a World Championship. I’m not impressed by Bama's 26 national championships.

Some of those Midwestern schools (and Arizona State) could make a good argument for including wrestling as a major title and I’d be inclined to be generous and allow it.

It's moronic to say Notre Dame isn't "in the club." They've had the misfortune of having to go through Alabama to win it, which is something we can all relate to. But they've gotten there....recently. They're higher on the pecking order than any of your other examples.
