Over passing

Great win last night after a rough start. Really turned it on. AF and Cam scoring like they did was great to see. We are going to need contributions from someone other than Bennett. Has AF possibly played his way into the starting lineup?
One point I observed was a bit of over passing. Seemed like we were passing up open shots and a lot of them were mid range or shorter. We really pushed the shot clock a few times looking for just one more pass.

Agree. Open shots are not being taken too often. Not sure why this is…..if the shot is there, take it!

Because it is what McCollum wants. He wants great shots at the rim and not good shots from distance if there is more than 10-15 seconds on the shot clock. Even after that point he still wants shots at the rim. Almost all his sets are about getting to the rim.

Add to that when we build up a lead Ben doesn't want to get in any hurry. The pace may pick up a bit when the talent level increases but the basic concepts will remain the same.

Twice AF had a one on one in the lane, no chance of a double team, didn't sniff attempting to shoot or drive.

I am impressed by the discipline shown by our players in shot selection when every fiber in a ballers body is screaming to take the open 12 footer....they stick to the program.

As Ben always says, they are there to serve their teammates, not themselves.
It will be interesting to see if he can instill that mentality in higher rated talent.
It's a real culture thing.

That changed later in the first and into the 2nd half. You can tell they're always trying to get to their 2nd and 3rd action in order to get better shots, but there's occasions where they pass up paint scores to try to get better paint scores. I have no problem passing up 12-15 footers, though.....those are the least efficient shots in basketball.

Ben has stated he wants shots from only 3 areas. At the rim, from the FT line, and from 3.....in that order....because those are the 3 most efficient areas. Rim shots are made at an 85% clip, so that's worth 1.7 points. FT line is 70%, so that's 1.4 points. 3s are 40%, so that's 1.2 points. Mid range are about 45-50%, so those are only worth, at best, 1 point.

My wife and I both agree that it is stupid for a 6' 9" Iowa player to get the ball in the lane four to 6 feet from the basket and then pass the ball out to the 3 point line. Keegan wouldn't do it and Luka wouldn't do it.
Yeah I forget details, but I remember one of our players getting the ball in deep, didn't even look at the basket, and kicked it back out. I don't recall for sure, but I think that possession might have ended in a turnover or a forced shot with the shot clock running down. I mean, short of a wide open layup, it's hard to get much better of an opportunity for a look at the basket than that. I understand working for the best possible shot, but it seems like a fine line separates being patient and refusing to shoot.

That said, Ben is the coach and has 4 DII natties to his name, which is 4 more than I have. It's easy for me to be a keyboard coach.

BM likes to run the shot clock down and make the other team play good D for the entire shot clock -it wears the other team down (in theory) and helps to control the pace of the game while limiting possessions for the other team. That all looks good on paper and quite often Iowa is able to get a good shot late in the shot clock -but not always. It is frustrating when they do pass up an open look only to have time run out on them.

Regarding getting the ball in deep, I have to believe matchups are a big factor. Recognizing who is defending you in the paint and taking advantage of a mismatch makes sense. If you are 6'9" but the defender is 7' then maybe they are coached to kick it out unless the 7' is out of position.

Offense is finding some rhythm at the right time it seems. Good at Wisconsin for a half and put it together against Ohio State. Hopefully a sign of things to come in March for the Hawks

It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks of Ben's coaching, he's going to coach the way he thinks will give Iowa the best chance of winning and I have to say, his record speaks for itself, you don't like it, I'm pretty sure he could care less.

We all know it, but then you stumble over a Mccollum vid. We have an absolute super star leading the hoops program

Tippett: I respectfully disagree that Ben tells the players to pass up a good shot 4 feet from the basket just to kill time. Ben is smart enough to take the points. I think it’s the players and their confidence level. This is a pretty timid group when Stirtz is in the game.
Just like everyone else here, I go nuts when they over pass. I remember the episode mentioned above where one of our sophomores caught the ball under the rim and instead of going up with it, pass it to Koch in the corner.
Anyway, whatever the reason, it’s quite irritating, and I hope Ben addresses it, especially if he’s responsible for it.

Yep, shots at the rim are high percentage, you draw fouls, you foul people out.

If you have two to three 3 pt sharpshooters on the floor at most times then shoot away
